I think anyone traveling with freien for 10 years would notice it. She mentioned that the demon king was the only one that noticed at first glance like lenren? Forgot his name. And heitir mentioned how long they were traveling together. So those 2 pieces of dialog lead me to believe if any mage traveling long periods of time with each other would notice

But Heiter was a monster himself... Calling the others monsters because of their physical feats while calling Heiter not a monster because he isn't as strong as them is like calling an Elephant not strong for not having any teeth. Heiter Is a monster in a different way.

Nobody is underestimating Heiter lol. It's just that it's hard to estimate Heiter's true power because it's very hard to find someone we can compare it to, with the exception of Sein.

That was a great detail. Can’t wait for the next season to come out. She was already suppressing her mana and yet that was how the test takers were tested. If she showed all her mana, they would probably actually all freeze in fear.

@@henryhe5945 Fern is a monster, she's a genius and has never slacked on passively improving for her whole life at this point. She's been withholding and masking her mana since she decided to take a wand. Heiter trained her before Frieren, because he's travelled 10 years with a millenia years old elf mage, he's watched and learned what Frieren does as a mage and transmitted it to Fern for a few years before handing her to her true teacher. So she's trained at least 10 years like that.

​@@johnlee5383 serie's mana when supressed is as big as frieren's mana unsupressed. Knowing how many strong people got scared the moment they saw Serie, and knew they would stand no chance... That says a lot about how many people would run in fear upon seeing frieren if she didnt supress it.

Just as an extra detail. Demons can suppress their mana. But they usually only ever do it for stealth in surprise attacks. But as you said earlier, they rarely enjoy such tactics.

Little precision on that : it's not just simply hiding one's mana that is a strategy against demons, it's doing it so much than it becomes second nature. Because power (and mana) is the basis of the life and the society of demons, there's no race in the frieren universe that uses it as instinctively as demons (not even elves). Anyone can hide their mana for some time but it would be temporary and quite flawed if not done expertly, so that wouldn't fool a trained demon. One has to dedicate their whole life to hiding their mana just to be able to fool demons, which is quite insane when you think about it : Frieren has sacrificed years upon years of growth just to be able to trick demons.

@@firestrike42 And mages do think the same. Suppressing your mana and hiding you talent is weird. They take pleasure in strenghening their skills, searching for powerful spells, they don't understand why you'd canter to basic/boring spells and hiding who you are when there so much magic to learn and developp. Why learn spells if you don't use it ? Message is that Frieren decided/realised that spells helping in the daily life are more important than fighting. She's learned mind shattering powerful ones, but she revels in simplicity, practicality. Fighting isn't what she wants, it doesn't make her happy, but travelling and helping people do. That what her practice revolves around. I like Frieren's subtext.

​@@firestrike42 You can see an example of that when Flamme was rescuing Frieren the first time they met, they were ambushed by demon mages, the demons were suppressing their mana to land a sneak attack until they noticed their targets were also a mages, so they decided to show themselves and be cocky, a proper thing for a demon to do as they thought they had more mana, and of course, they got literally blasted to smithereens in one single attack by Flamme because of that cockiness.

​@@jairo8746 a little correction in the end they revealed themselves moments before the attack because they have pride demanding they show their true might over other mages it's not a matter of them being stronger necessarily but that they are mages

Same with the flower spell and caring for human. She says that it’s pointless or that it is a waste of time, yet she uses the spell and remembers all of her students.

@Kiba114 yeah that's what they're talking about with frieren she still shows her mana but not all of it. That what they mean by seeing the fluctuations in it because frieren isn't perfect and let's out a little more or a little less than what she aiming for.

Now you made me imagine what would Heiter say to Serie since he is a devout believer of the Goddess. Would be awesome to see Heiter shut her down.

Frieren gave him what he truly wanted that even Lernen himself didn't know. It is not doing something remarkable to be noticed by Serie, but to be ingrained on her mind. Frieren said Serie never forgets about her students and to that Lernen replied he and Serie are alike as they are both not good with words of affirmation.

The level of praise Serie casually dished out in that scene is astounding.

I think she can also control it do it while sleeping. It's like practicing breathing techniques in Yoga. First you do it deliberately all day and sometimes return to your usual pattern. But as you practice everyday, your default breathing pattern changes to the one you were practicing (so it's same during sleep too)

She literally does. That’s the whole point of the show. It broke her heart to realize she was too slow to notice the man she admired loved her, and she in turn loved him too. She spends the rest of her practically immortal life remembering specifically him (and their friends), where as she contently left Flamme in the past. I think that speaks volumes in an immortal’s perspective, where a forgetting spell would be so much easier than remembering the pain of realizing too late.

and that is what seerie has become. Frieren is not at that level yet. Frieren is just lucky to encounter himmel co and fern co. Otherwise she would become another seerie

they can do it, but only do it sometimes and not for a long time, if it only until they reach their victim, like when flamme save frieren, and 3 demons appeared, flamme only noticed them when they appear because they were supressing their mana, but they always show off in front of their enemies, but flamme still maintain her mana aura lower to have the chance to kill those 3 demons in a single hit.

In this context it kinda is, cuz she could've devoted her life to increasing the amount of mana she has, which would've raised her mana levels near to those of Serie, but instead, she developed the ability to suppress mana just to kill demons, cuz for them, it's unnatural to suppress mana since their social standig is defined by the amount of mana they have, so its a pretty impractical skill for demons to practice or even think about. Which is why they never see Frieren coming.

For a 1 on 1 fight, or small scale fights, it kind of is.

Yes, Serie is also suppressing her mana. Fern is, too. This video is solely about Frieren's own mana suppression being discovered, however. Edit: I am aware that there are many other mages who cloak their mana output, but the point remains that this video is solely about Frieren's.

@@ajiexyt65-gu9ut That may be true, but my personal opinion is that the stille can recognise that Sense is a pacifist and detect no ill will towards them in her mana. So even though they detect her mana, they trust her to not hurt them.

I made a bunch of cuts, not all of the dialogue and scenes from the episodes were shown, though I still tried my best to make it as 'natural' and 'comprehensible' as possible.

Heiter is skilled to some extent but I think it has to do more with their 10 years of journeying together that he has bound to have seen the oddities in Freiren's mana or a couple fluctuations during some intense moments when Freiren couldn't have focused on suppression. Heiter isn't that skilled compared to the Serie's disciple who saw through it at first glance.

​​@@madensmith7014 heiter as a 'mage' is as strong as a first class mage purely as a byproduct of how insane he is as a priest. He was the second (known) user of Zoltraak after Qual, so he has really good magic detection/analysis since he copied it. He would stomp most of the first class mages unless they could one shot him due to his insane support class abilities, but also his offensive magic.

Flamme explained that strength/might/power is essentially the Demons' way to recognize one's status (in their society). Basically, whether you should obey him/her, or whether you should be the one who should be obeyed. There doesn't seem to be a need for them to hide the amount of mana they possess when only other Demons, or 'exceptions' (Frieren, Serie, Himmel, etc.) can overpower them, whether they hide their mana or not. And I think this makes sense. Demons are simple-minded creatures and it explains why Frieren considers them to be nothing more than monsters/animals. Most Demons probably wouldn't think of hiding their power permanently after surviving an encounter with Himmel for example. Himmel can't see mana anyway so he likely won't underestimate any Demon no matter what.

They show mana to dominate other demons, It's part of their "society", the thing is, most Demons are much more powerful than humans and are acustomed to being the one with higher mana, for them, mana is like a badge that gives them power and ranks in their society, that's the reason behind them showing off their mana, even then, Frieren's mana supression is almost perfect, there is only a handful of mages capable of hiding their mana in front of a Demon But it's still fantasy, I think leaving out some logic for a better story is acceptable.

It doesn't make sense because you are ignoring pieces of the puzzle (despite it being referenced in the video when Aura calls BS on Frieren hiding her power because she 'isn't showing the signs that appear when suppressing your mana output'). Namely, the part where there are signs you can see that make it clear you are hiding your power. Frieren has been doing it nonstop for a literal millennia and there are still signs that a sufficiently perceptive person can see to pick out that she is doing it. Hiding your true strength is a lot less effective when hiding it involves wearing a big sign telling people you are hiding your true powers so they know to expect you have extra strength in reserve. Frieren isn't an oddity because she is the only one willing to pull such a 'dirty trick', she is an oddity because she can actually pull it off in a way that leaves 99.99% of her opponents not realizing she is hiding her true power level. So between their pride in their power as a mark of social standing and their belief that trying to hide your power is pointless anyway because its not going to surprise anyone it makes sense that demons don't bother doing it.

1. Demons are more powerful than humans. 2. If they try to limit their power, they will lose dignity. They have long lives. 3. There is no reason to hide their powers, except for cases of stealth. Hide from who? 4. They can see when someone is suppressing mana. You need 100-200+ YEARS of training to fool them. No human can do this. 5. They have already beaten their worst enemies: the elves. Very few remain. 6. They love magic. They love to learn while fighting, and advance their magic. They know they'll win all out. 7. Enemy is not going to get away and become much more powerful, such that this might come back to bite them. 8. Intimidation. A panicked enemy is easier to trick and kill. 9. If all else fails, they still have words. They can escape and come back. 10. Frieren is unique, there is only a single one of her. Also, she's not that well known, and nobody survives knowing her secret.

Tell me you didnt watch the anime without telling me you didnt watch the anime. 😂 Demon society is dictated by mana. Mana defines who will lead and who will follow. Take the example of Flamme wherein a noble would sometimes wear beggar’s clothes and go incognito to visit the commoner’s market, but would never ever forego his wealth and status. Same goes for demons in that they might conceal their mana in order to ambush prey, but would never take the time and effort to completely conceal it throughout. Next time watch the anime before you open your mouth. 😂
