Frigidaire Fridge Not Cooling and The Easy Fix

I have a side by side Frigidaire fridge that stopped cooling but the freezer works ok, everything was still frozen there. The control LED was blinking an H1 error code. At first I thought it wasn't cooling enough because we left the door open too long but the temp in the fresh food section kept getting warmer so I had to do some troubleshooting. I could hear that the fan in the freezer was working, the one that is supposed to blow cold air into the refrigerator compartment. From that I knew that it is either a stuck damper or the damper motor has failed. In this video I show how to take out the control assembly that has the damper in it and how I "unstuck" my damper flapper. It was frozen to the damper motor housing.

We had the same problem with our Frigidaire side by side. No air coming out of the vent, Frig. setting kept going down to 1 or H, and was getting warmer inside, 60 degrees. So my wife was checking out the KZfaq Videos, and saw the picture of the digital readout box on your Video, clicked on your excellent detailed Video, and we gave it a try. There was no air coming out of the vent, so we took the screws out, unplugged the 2 wiring harnesses, took the unit out, pried open the door with a screwdriver, plugged everything back in, put in the screws, and we've been watching the Frig for a couple days, and everything seem to be working fine. Thank You, Thank You, Thank you for the very detailed Video, you "Saved the Day" for us and we Truly Appreciate it. We are now Subscribed. Phillip & Joyce.

I wanted to thank you for your video. This exact thing happened to our Fridgidaire Gallery Side By Side fridge/freezer. We bought this one used on FB so we immediately thought "well, we got our monies worth...time to pay up for a brand new one" but then I watched your video and I felt for air on the inside of the fridge and there was NONE (our model didn't require engaging the door/light switch to check this). I came across another suggestion that said to defrost the entire fridge for 24 hrs and so we unplugged it, unloaded everything into ice chests and left it open for 24 hrs. The following afternoon we cleaned it up real good and plugged it in and it took about 30 min or so but it was working fine. We are on day 2 and it's still good! If it wasn't for this video, we would have immediately purchased another fridge. So again, thank you!

As others have mentioned, blocked or ice buildup in the return vent can also stop the air from flowing into the refrigerator. If you open the freezer door and then air starts flowing in again, your damper is ok and you should unblock the return vent then look into defrost and/or drain issues. The damper is the more common failure on these units, but definitely try opening the freezer before ordering the part. Awesome job on the video. Lots of great info, clear instructions, video quality 👍

I can’t say thank you enough! All the sudden my Frigidaire started beeping and showing the h1, quick google and hit video and your video was the first one I hit. Followed your instructions and presto there was a tiny piece of ice and water which was the ice that melted. The air started blowing as soon as plugged it back. The flapper I’m not really sure if it opened on its own but I made sure it was open before I put all the screws back. So at least it’s not beeping anymore and there is cold air blowing so hopefully this solved it. Will wait and see in the morning if it continues to work. 🤞🏻

I really appreciate such a good and detailed explanation of the problem. Just a comment that my problem was failed damper motor but I was able to get it going wiile I waited for parts by sticking a fork in the dampler hole to hold the damper partly open. It worked fine for short term. You might have to adjust size of fork if it gets too cold or not cold enough but my first try worked good enough. I even seriously considered just leaving that and cancelling the $100 part.

Thank you Peter! Every refrigerator will have it's own little differences but yes, in most cases the fresh food section of the refrigerator gets its cooling from the freezer. That's why that little damper is important. If it's stuck closed = no cooling. If it's stuck open = too much cooling/freezing.

Those dampers do go bad but not very often. Usually they don't freeze up either. That motor is strong enough to pop a small piece of ice off the door. There is a return vent hole on side of wall . Pull 2nd drawer out at bottom and you'll see it . A way to test to see if the damper is open or closed, open the freezer door also and see if air is coming in refrigerator through damper. If so close the freezer door. Did it stop blowing in refrigerator ? If so , the return vent is frozen up. Do not use a hair dryer. Use a turkey baster and hot water to unclog.

Before jumping into bigger repairs, let me mention that the number one cause of a warm fridge is a dust build up on the coils under the unit. Pop the kick panel off by the floor and if it looks like your lint screen on a drier, clean that first! This probably needs doing every 2 years on the average fridge. If you have pets I would suggest cleaning every year because the fan sucks up all the animal hair.

The compressor is brand new and it was replaced exactly a year ago. What could be wrong? Only the freezer temperature setting is acting up; refrigirator's temp setting is fine. What's a "quick fix" before I call my home warranty insurance and spend $$$ on what could be an easy fix???

It's very important to keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. If the temperatures aren't kept at the proper settings the more chance Listeria, a bacterium that causes foodborne illness, can grow, especially if the refrigerator temperature is above the safe temperature. Thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.

My Frigidaire side by side model is identical to this one inside, and I discovered that mine was not cooling on the fresh food side because I had accidentally put something (a jar of pickles) in front of the air vent where the cold air comes in. It went from 47 to 38 degrees in less than 15 minutes after I moved the jar.

My LG needed a compressor, all new tubing, freon, etc. There was a class action law suit against them. I had A&E coming for years and they did nothing. They are the most ignorant of service people. The repair took about 5 hours

Same except I didn’t use A&E. LG, Kenmore, Samsung, all use the same part number and yes I signed up for the lawsuit. Had several service technicians tell me (all these appliances are junk) and replace with GE or Frigidaire.

My condolences... Those new LG and Samsung refrigerators really are cheaply made. Many people have problems with them. Thank you for sharing your experience so that others may be aware.

@@WordofAdviceTV We lost so much food. I put claims in thru Lowes… I believe it was 3 times simply because A&E did nothing. They kept telling us we had too much food in the freezer & the air flow was blocked for years. Also my unit stops all fans with any door open.

@@SixTwoHemi Let me know how you do. I had very few work order receipts from A&E or Sears. They kept saying they would mail them to me & of course never did. Calling did no good. So I didn’t sign up for the law suit. PS. I have a Hemi too, 5.7

I used to work for A&E. They stress warranty sales more than repairs. A guy that’s a good service contract salesman is praised, but a person that actually knows how to repair appliances never gets any praises. They get reprimanded for not selling enough service contracts.
