One of the biggest rock swindles ever is this false notion that Oasis never cracked America.... fact is Oasis were HUGE in the US for a good few years. Morning Glory went to number 4 in the US, selling a whopping 5 million copies. Be Here Now went in at 2 in the US. Later on Dig Out Your Soul went to #5. That's three Top 5 US albums. They played arenas from 96 to 2009 there and have been nominated for 3 Grammy Awards.... And they did this without playing the game. I think that is great success Stateside. A real shame not many people know this, thanks to the British media!

yeah noticed that's, it's all the Beatles all over u.s known as their saviors in a way and what they sing like hymnes but oasis seemed to kind of rock the boat too much for the majority of their Christian thinking, and pleasant life, to see a swagger from Liam and cussing, what it's like in Manchester was probably too much to accept or the balance of it all for u.s which is understandable.

You nailed it, Mikey' Michael. Despite the Brits' inexplicable worship for these clowns, they are an exceedingly mediocre band with maybe 4 good songs and the rest forgettable shit. The comparison to the Beatles is delusional on the part of their fans. The Beatles were innovators who broke new musical ground with every album, NO ONE can say that Oasis broke ANY new musical ground. And Noel Gallagher is the biggest musical thief this side of Led Zeppelin -- but at least Zeppelin fucking rocked.
@tombarker26806 жыл бұрын
+Erik Killmonger I refer you to kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9CIm7Ck1Ne-fHk.html where Ray Davies says that "every so often a band comes along and changes the musical landscape" although I will agree the music wasn't generally of a new genre, it was just very good simple music
@jakebutler10959 жыл бұрын
I have to agree oasis definitely deserves an award for the mark they've made on alternative music say what you want about them as people but you can hear their influence in a plethora of bands today Coldplay, Keane, Arctic Monkeys, and tons of american bands as well. You've got to at least give them that they wrote great pop tunes I mean I don't know anyone that doesn't know or at least have never heard an Oasis song before in their lives and they weren't even in vogue when I was growing up well i'm still growing up but you get my point.

Oasis was the first big british band in many years that stayed in England and kept recording there, unlike many other british bands who get a wee bit famous and move to America. Oasis in the 90's and 2000's were the voice of the british people, and their songs were anthems for them.

Im a huge oasis fan! Bought their records and was able to see them twice :-). IMO America got really turned off by the fact of them not completing the first 2 tours they had here and their arrogance . One in particular I was planning to go to in 1996( Morning Glory tour), the week before the show they announced it was cancelled cause Liam went back to England for whatever reason. I believe Americans will forgive alot of things, but standing up your fans with no good excuse will kill your career here. their popularity went down from there after that
@theselector473310 жыл бұрын
That's a big part of it BUT there's so much more. I think their brand of RnR, obviously very British influenced, was gonna have a very hard time against the typical American Rock bands that were very popular at the time ie: Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Korn etc.......Rap was also huge back then as were boy bands and Madonna style Pop. So they had a LOT of competition. Add to this their "Don't give a shit/arrogant" attitude, the volatility within the band (in particular the bros) and the fact that they couldn't complete their first 4 tours of America and to put it mildly they were up against it bigtime. The mere fact that BHN got to No. 2 on the US Billboard charts and they were able to sell out Madison Square Gardens on several occasions (after their initial surge in popularity) is a testament to the bands tenacity, hard work and talent. If they had done things right from the get go then they probably would've sold 5 or 6 times more albums than what they did.......I mean, WTSMG sold 4 Million in America, that's less than 800,000 what they sold in the UK, in a country that has 4 and half times more people. It should've sold 10 - 12 Million at least.
@Dingalingring9 жыл бұрын
+stromer24 - I'm pretty sure that the reason Liam gave for cancelling that American tour in '96 was that he had laryngitis (read: too much partying, haha), and that he also needed to find a new house to live in with then-gf Patsy Kensit. I always found it ironic that Oasis piped up about how they were the greatest band in the world (and, to be fair, they were close to being that during their prime), yet they could also be so self-sabotaging. But, then, they were all hoovering vast quantities of cocaine up their noses in those days, so that might explain a lot. It was a shame though...
@theselector47339 жыл бұрын
Even though there's not much doubt they took a LOT of drugs and partied hard I don't think they did as much as everyone makes out. There's an interview with a press guy from Creation that says that the stories in the papers were about 80% BS and 20% accurate. Of course the boys didn't mind, it added to their bad boy image. I've seen ppl strung out on drugs and drink and both Liam and Noel don't look like that at all.....even in the heady days of 94' - 98'.
@Dingalingring9 жыл бұрын
Noel has often said himself that the lads partied hard/did a lot of drugs - this is straight from the horse's mouth (Noel), and not the media. There are many clips on KZfaq. That time when Oasis were booted off that Cathay Pacific flight to Australia (in 1998?), and Liam was then banned for life from ever flying with them again, Liam was interviewed shortly afterwards and he seemed coked to the gills. Same thing when Oasis collected a Brit Award onstage from Michael Hutchence. There are tons of these kinds of incidents. Don't get me wrong - I love Oasis and I've found most of the aforementioned clips hilarious, but you can't say they weren't tanked, when they clearly were (and when Noel has since admitted it as well). I've seen people pissed-drunk and high as well, though the ones on coke were fairly 'controlled', all things considered otherwise. Probably helped that they hadn't been boozing much prior to and during that, were fundamentally intelligent people (one guy had studied medicine, but abandoned that and spent a year living in New York and hanging around with present day-sober Depeche Mode - thanks to 'a -friend-of-a-friend' sort of thing). The other guy on coke there was actually Howard Marks (he'd only done a little coke to perk himself up for the post-show 'meet n' greet' thing). :) FYI, I don't condone or endorse drug use - to each their own.
@theselector47339 жыл бұрын
SallyTheSeahorse Yeah, as I said, I believe they took a LOT of drugs but not as much as they OR the press lead us to believe. I've seen many of the videos you've mentioned and I agree wholeheartedly, and YES they are Hilarious. The Parkinson interview where Noel says he "could've won gold medals in drug taking for England at the Olympics" is very funny but obviously highly exaggerated......just take a look at the guy!! He looks extremely young for his age, has a teenagers hair, all his own teeth (I assume LOL) and is quite fit & trim......AND Liam (who's supposed to be worse) looks even better. These guys 'dabbled' in drugs, enjoy a drink or two now and smoke a bit and that's it. Nothing wrong with that, they know when to stop and how to control it.

Americans like myself would have loved a frontman like Liam. The man is absolutely rock and roll. The fact is that Oasis didn’t do a lot in America. They didn’t tour America very much if at all. They might have done one MTV appearance and never MTV Unplugged which was enormous in the 90s. Nirvana’s appearance on MTV Unplugged solidified them as absolute legends. For Oasis it could’ve been their Ed Sullivan show. Oasis could’ve been huge here.

I read that Oasis were reasonably big in America, but they should have been much bigger. Their marketing people didn’t understand that describing your music as country was so important. Country is a religion in the states and most radio stations don’t play any other type of music. Even the Beatles realised this as well as the Police. So Oasis suffered with limited exposure on that all important medium called radio. It’s funny how this all resulted. Imagine Wonderwall, a modern classic. It should have been in the top ten of all time us sales. Can it be defined as country, yes, call it what you like, just get it on their radio stations.

As an American, Oasis were huge here in the 90s and still have a following. Champagne Supernova and Don’t Look Back In Anger are constantly on American radio, not to mention Wonderwall. It seems that Americans only know Oasis from Morning Glory, which is a shame, as their other albums are amazing too, but to say they never “broke the USA” is a lie.
@erikkillmonger56243 жыл бұрын
It's not a lie. They never broke America. Three or four songs that did middling on the charts is not "breaking America."

Knob reporter bringing up the Grammy thing. Oasis music will be remembered long after most one hit Grammy winners are forgotten. Right proper staying power, that's Oasis with meat on the bones!

"The lion's share?!" He penned ALL of Oasis hits, for fuck's sake! Did Liam write Wonderwall? NO! Live Forever? NO! Enough fucking said!

WRONG Liam wrote one song by Oasis.
@jrmarrero969 жыл бұрын
WRONG Liam wrote several songs for Oasis and none of them were hits. His first composition was Little James, written for Oasis' fourth record. Subsequent records featured a few songs written by Liam as well.

Joseph Marrero So you have contradicted yourself. Your first comment said "He (Noel) penned ALL of Oasis hits, for fuck's sake! Did Liam write Wonderwall? NO! Live Forever? NO! Enough fucking said!" But now you said he DID write songs for Oasis. Make ya mind up. I was referring to little James when I said, he (Liam) wrote one for the band. So what other songs didnt he write for Oasis ?
@jrmarrero969 жыл бұрын
How the fuck have I contradicted myself? READ!! I said Noel wrote ALL of Oasis hits, not ALL album tracks or otherwise. Here is a brief example of a "hit": Wonderwall was Oasis biggest hit. You can google or Wikipedia if you want to see a list of writing credits. "Contradict" that before you make another comment please. From Definitely Maybe until Be Here Now, Noel wrote EVERYTHING, including album tracks and b-sides AND THEIR BIGGEST HITS, period.

Joseph Marrero Read all your comments.....You said "He penned ALL of Oasis hits, for fuck's sake! Did Liam write Wonderwall? NO! Live Forever? NO! Enough fucking said!" Meaning Noel wrote ALL the songs . Then you totally contradict yourself when you said "....Liam wrote several songs for Oasis and..... " You gotta be really fucking stupid not to see (the duplicity) that you have contradicted yourself. Contradisc means saying two things that oppose each other. Or its like saying Liam didnt write any songs for Oasis and then a minute later saying Liam did wrote songs for Oasis. Wow you really are fucking dumb, sorry no offence.

Noel’s solo material has been rarely as good as Oasis’. I still wait for something to catch me as back then.
