To anyone complaining that we shouldn’t be putting the a7 III in this comparison, let me ask, why not? It’s the current model in the price range that compares to the other two. So yea, that’s why it’s here. Not to mention it’s still a fantastic option and one of the, if not the most revolutionary mirrorless camera ever. So when they release the 4, we will we do this video once again.

Absolutely! Was looking for my first full frame camera and wanted to go mirrorless. I decided to go with A7 III because the glass is cheaper. I also got my first real glass (Sigma 85mm 1.4 DN DG). Comparable system in Nikon or Canon would be much pricier.

The answer? Any one of them. If you can't get great results from a modern $2,000+ camera, the problem isn't the camera, its you. It's the photographer that counts.

Not really, I prefer SLR but I think Canon and Nikon will not invest anymore in this techno and are going 100% mirorless. Am a photo guy, not a video guy, SLR fulfill my need at a lower price tag (both body and lenses...)

@@legionator there is a Canon adapter for the Z series that gives full AF and data, which is better than its own Ftz. So you can use canon lenses on the nikon

Have had my a7iii over a year now and I don’t regret it. As a beginner hobbyist it’s probably too much camera, but I just love it and always have a blast taking photos plus it doubles as a great video camera for family events. Highly recommend it.

So many people looking for confirmation that they bought the best camera. If it does what you need it to do, then it is the right camera for you. I still use a Nikon D200 I bought around 2008.

This! I'm still using a Sony a7 mark 1 but it still does the job. I am looking to upgrade though, since the screen has got some dead pixels now and I'm having some other hardware issues, and think the Canon R6 is best for me. But like I said in another comment, you wouldn't be disappointed with any of these cameras, especially if you choose based on which system you're most comfortable with!

hah yeah i just recently swaped my EOS D60 ive been using for so so long with a 80D, it can still kick out a great image with a bit of work but you can see when it suffers

I used a D200 for many years, eventually upgraded to a D800 then D850 because I needed the resolution, but the D200 was an absolute beast. Pure workhorse, over a million frames on it never once missed a beat. It was dropped on rocks, knocked about daily, doused in saltwater, caught in a sandstorm and all the surfaces were worn down mirror smooth, but it never failed me once. I still have it and it still works just fine.

@@richardgorski23 Agreed on the menus and handling. I've been thinking about getting a Z6 II but if Sony fixes those two issues that you mentioned, I'm seriously going to consider switching over from Nikon to Sony.

I mean, honestly any 3 yr old camera is still performing very well these days. New features and advancnts are always being made, but the tech is mature enough that the capability is pretty high across the board.

I have the A7 III since it first came out, and I switched from D800e. Three years later it's so awesome that Nikon/Canon just caught up. I can't wait to see what Sony does with A7 IV

Was able to cover multiple events no problem with the original z6, but I welcome the updated AF performance with the z6ii as it's made my shooting experience a lot better in low-light. Considering that I did tons of events from the D7000, to the D750, the z6ii is a real winner!

@@Ritalie The camera industry is moving towards mirrorless systems and Nikon stayed on the DSLR ship till it sank… So technological aspects compared to the other 2 are "behind" in a sense. I'm going to stick with Nikon though because that just means they have guides and references as they develop their technology. Just my opinion.

I upgraded to the Canon R6 I love it. Couple different reasons because of three different wheels that makes it easy to change Shutter speed, Fstop & iso recommend anybody the camera.

Upgraded to the Z6ii, very happy so far with how it performs and thankfully the dude that bought my Z6 off of me was willing to let me keep the Nikon battery and give him the 4 3rd party batteries that I had (because they weren't compatible with the Z6ii)

Thanks for your valued insight into these 3 cameras. I've been shooting Canon since I got my first Canon AE-1 Program in 1979. I've got several pieces of Canon and 3rd party glass for Canon which would make it very expensive for me to switch from Canon (which is why I was interested in watching this video). And, considering all of the specs and features of the R6 vs the other 2 bodies, it seems the additional $500 (over the Nikon) will be worth my investment (since I also won't be forced to buy a whole new inventory of lenses). Thanks, again for your valued analysis.

Speaking of FroPack presets. I usually use about 5 from the FroPack 1 but recently Ive been doing nature landscaps and I have found that FroPack 2 works well with these kinds of photos. I even used some of the FroPack 1 presets for these photos that I would normally never use. Both presets are excellent starter points for me and my photography. Glad I got both!

Totally agree with focusing - i have my R5 set to Eye AF, with the SET button custom set to pull focus to the centre of frame for the times the AF picks the wrong subject - between these two options there is rarely a time the shot will be missed, and many times it has got a moment that there was only an extremely small window to capture... as far as cards go the CFExpress cards are really nice - I had to take 140 GB to a client, as they were nearby, the transfer only took about 3 minutes over CFexpress / USB C

That’s the biggest regret I have switching z6 -> r5. The skin tone is not as good in video and when I do zoom, I lost that movie-like dreamy feel people had commented on my z6 setup. Yes, I am very serious about my zoom meetings and use my mirrorless setup as much for zoom as for photography.

I have to say, everything I see points me towards a Sony or Canon, but I’m not sure what it is, I just like the Nikon more and I’m not sure if I’d be happy with anything else

Z6/Z6ii is more than usable for many people. And tbh, R6 is the most expensive, so it should have better spec. After all is a mini-1DX

The Sony a7iii is on sale for $1798 right now body only. I was able to get it new (relative in the sense it had no shutter count) for $1600. The canon is at $2499 still body only. Going to try an adapter to use my friends really nice Nikon glass soon including a a vintage film one.

I am thinking the same way. I am a Nikon shooter wanting to go full frame from D500 & 7200. Almost bought the D850, but it looks like mirrorless is the way to go. Usability weighs heavy against the Sony for me but the specs and lenses are there. If I go mirrorless, I will be changing mounts either way I go. It's a tough decision. I may buy the original Z7 or the new Z6ii to replace my D7200 with the hope that Nikon catches up with a Z wildlife camera in the future. I am really hoping Nikon does something special with their long lenses. I think a lightweight 600pf will fit nicely in the Nikon lineup and the competition. I think people would buy the Z bodies to take advantage of the lenses. Thank you Jared for putting this together. Usability is tough to gage and highly personal but a few sample comparisons might be beneficial. Switch from stills to video and back, programing buttons, switch in and out of tracking mode, waking up from sleep mode might be comparable features.

Great video... lens affordability is a huge factor with these systems. Used EF (with the outstanding Canon adaptor with ring controller), and 3rd Party Sony offerings for me personally make Canon and Sony the more attractive options. I think the A7IV will put the money ball squarely back in Sony's court (with Tammy glass it's the most economic option as well). 30 mp with 12 fps is my sweet spot.

Alex, I’m with you 100%. I’ve watched all of Jared’s reviews, and even had the R6 ordered. At the last moment, my final takeaway from Jared was that even though he pushes hard for Canon, that he still strongly supports and shows love for Nikon and their superb image quality. I called and chanced my order to the Z6 II, and have never looked back.

Moving from DSLR, I was choosing between Canon R6 and Sony a7Riii. Ended up going with Canon, mostly due to ergonomics and overall feel. Can't go wrong with any system.

This is the problem I'm having, I shoot a D500 but honestly I prefer the ergos on the R6 vs the Z6, I think I will go to canon when I do upgrade.

@@jdam28k did you try using both these cameras? Go to a camera store and try using them. Pick whichever feels good in your hands. What I implying is that do not decide on ergonomics just by looking at their images on screen.

@@nightfury4756 yeah I did, hence my comment, I still prefer the r6 for ergos, not to say the z6 is bad at all, quite the opposite, I just don’t think they are as good as the dslr counterparts or the Canons currently.

As a former Nikon shooter I wish there were more nice things that could be said about Nikon. Unfortunately it seems likely that having mostly caught up to what the three year old A7III can do Sony will release the A7IV and then Nikon (and probably Canon) will be playing catch-up again. It's also incredible to have high quality 3rd party glass available that uses officially licensed protocols! Nikon and Canon still haven't learned that lesson.

@@DB-sd3cw Cameras with mirrors are dead technology. There are real advantages to mirrorless such as the sensor being closer to the lens and being able to see *exactly* what the camera will capture though the viewfinder. People will continue to cling to DSLRs for a while but there is no future for that tech.

The need for a high capacity buffer may be not so critical for taking continually photos for tens of seconds like you take a movie but in those situations where the decisive moments in a long period of time are a few seconds apart in which the images are still being recorded in the card. In other words when the interval between the bursts is not big enough.

Thanks for this nice video. I have important questions for me, as you have good practical experience using all those 3 cameras: 1. How did you find the jpeg colors in these cameras? How do you sort them from nicer to worse in this respect? 2. How about the rolling shutter in video commented on in some reviews regarding the canin R6? 3. How about heating build up in 4K video in canon as also commented in some reviews? Are points 2 and 3 present also in sony and nikon?

Damn. Never been more tempted to go with the Canon, even though I've been leaning toward Sony because of their awesome third party lens choices. I'm already a Canon shooter, so the R6 may just 'feel' right. Comparing menu systems/interfaces could have helped.

Go Sony, you can buy cheaper but awesome lenses from Tamron&Sigma. Why waste money on going Canon/Nikon when there is a better option

The Canon R6 also shoots 120fps at 1080p. It wasn't listed on the spec chart, but will do it. (Without audio.)

It reminds me reading comparison reports of cars in Germany between Mercedes, BMW and Audi. There is always a winner but at the end of the day it comes down to personal preferences as the differences are minor as they all build very good cars, respectively very good cameras in this case!

I don't own any Nikon glass, but I think it's worth mentioning that if you buy the Z6 ii from B&H photo right now, you can get an F-to-Z mount adapator for just $50. So if you were already a Nikon owner, you can keep using for F glass with about the same level of (in)convenience as the Canon users adapting their EF mount lenses on R bodies.

Good photographers anticipated the action...know your subject and put yourself in position to catch the moment. Photography is a lost art...technology has made everyone a photographer cause they can point a camera at a person and the camera catches the eye and then all you have to do is press the shutter and shoot off 20 rounds and pick the best of the bunch, crop, adjust exposure and show how awesome you are. I use new tech also but I still use my D3 and D700 from time to time. I no longer have a film camera.

@@marcusalanphotography694 I wish it were that easy. With birds, for example, you still have to know your subject, anticipate its action, and be in position to catch it. But being in position to catch the action and actually catching it are different things, especially when the subject is small and fast moving. Eye AF gives me one less thing to worry about. If you can't anticipate what your subject might do and be ready for it, all the tech in the world won't help.

@@JohnDrummondPhoto so there were no birds in flight photos before this. My point is the joy of photography used to be in the achievement of the work and knowledge you put in. Now all you do is aim and shoot. It is the equivalence now of fishing with and aggressive worm that attacks the fish for you. Where is the sport in that. Don’t get me wrong, I use the tech also but the greater joy and achievement comes from the work I do without all the assistance.

Regarding E-mount lenses .. Not only the 3rd party native lenses but since you already mentioned Canon's own first party adapter ... you forgot to mention that both Nikon and Sony have these two for their respective F and A mount glass as well. And with the E-mount you also get the 3rd-party adapters for just about everything including vintage Leica glass on mounts like M42 up to even Canon EF glass (and this with full AF capabilities and minimal drawbacks). Sure, Canon's adapter may be more seamless and less confusing or limited than the other two systems but at least it's worth the mention that the other systems also have their own equivalents; and with Sony you even get a much wider selection of lenses AND mounts/adapters to choose from.

Good video, but one correction Jared. The a7iii (and a7riii) had a firmware update in April 2018 that means it now has full time eye AF, no need to press a button to initiate it. It was the same update that brought the time lapse (Interval shoot function) capability.

That, plus the fact that it is EXTREMELY future proof. Glass is expensive so its great there are cheaper options via 3rd parties, and all of the a7 and a9 cameras use the same mount so its a smooth transition to the next Sony body 5-10 years from now. Personally, i feel like that is the most important as a semi-pro photographer.

Or I head the new A7 IV is coming out so should I wait for that one. I own the A7iii and it’s still awesome 2 years later. Based on price, the Sony or Nikon are the best bets looking at it.

Well, I watched Manny Ortiz's video reviewing Z6 II's AF system.. And it outperformed Sony and Canon... Somy had farthest distance to detect face... But sticking to the face was better on Nikon... Plus Nikon's colours...

I agree. I think at this point it’s really just down to preference between these cameras. They’re all so close now. I think the R6 is a bit better than the Z6II, but once you consider price you can actually get the Z6II and the excellent 50mm 1.8S for the same price as just the R6 body. Canon just came out with a cheap RF 50MM 1.8, but it seems that it performs worse than the Nikon 50mm. So if we just look at 50mm 1.8s, the Nikon probably has better Image quality for less cost, but..... the Canon body seems to have more potential if you cough up for the very expensive L glass.

@@thisisbenji90 That's the issue here... If I want a good but budget friendly system... Then with the price of R6 I can have Z6 II+Kit lens + 85 1.8S... Which kinda makes it complete for me... Also I have used Sony, Nikon amd Canon... I feel I like Nikon's rugged build is better in my hands and my situation...
