Gloria Vanderbilt has been in the public eye since she was born, but according to her son, CNN anchor and "60 Minutes" correspondent Anderson Cooper, the world has never gotten to see the side she's shared with him. In their new book, "The Rainbow Comes and Goes," and an HBO documentary, "Nothing Left Unsaid," both explore the loving and occasionally bickering relationship between mother and son. Rita Braver reports. Originally broadcast April 3, 2016.

I wish my Mom could have retained her wonderful presence as she was such a powerhouse until she got dementia and left me at 84. It's been 8 yrs and I still miss her terribly. She taught me everything I know EXCEPT how to live without her. Rest in Peace Miss Vanderbilt.......

Our lives have been very hard I hope he’s going to come out of what he’s going through OK. I’ve been so worried about him and this interview popped up for me again. This family has been through so very much pain and heartache. Now Anderson has a son, with whom he may share all this wonderful history. The very fact that he and his mother shared such an incredible bond is a gift. I, too, shared this kind of bond with my own mother in the last 20 years of her life. We were left with nothing unsaid when she passed almost 4 years ago, and I go to sleep every night with her in my prayers. If you haven't made friends with your parents, do it today. You'll be amazed at what fascinating people they really have turned into.

Adrienne Bolles very well said- I was thinking how Anderson seems to have it all. Born into a wealthy family of high society parents. He is a fit, handsome man with an exciting job that many people yearn for. His mom looked beautiful and glamorous still at 92. But then when the suicide of his brother it reminded money does not buy happiness and inside many external appearances, misery and trauma lie. His dad died of heart disease at only 50 so no matter how wealthy one is- it could disappear in a moment. I think the suicide of his brother is sad. I appreciate the words you wrote Adrienne. Even though Anderson seems to have it all so to speak, he internally and privately could be going though a very painful time of mental and emotional suffering.

Plenty or tears, plenty of smiles, happy heart. Thank you for sharing this snippet of your life. I loved Mrs. Vanderbilt since i was a child. Worn the jeans that my peers made fun of me about...I was wearing "white ppl pants" but I didn't care because I looked cute. Lol I have enjoyed seeing Anderson on t.v. for years...he so dreamy and I'm mesmerized by him, looks, talent, rawness, no b.s. interviewer, calling it what it is. I feel like he's fighting for me and I appreciate that. So, thank you both for being part of my life, sharing memories, and me sharing a snippet of mine. God bless.🙏💜

Natalie Merchant from the band called 10,000 Maniacs resembles Gloria Vanderbilt. She dated many actors like Bruce Cabot.

I didn't know Anderson Cooper was Gloria's son. What a surprise. I was thrilled to find my old Gloria Vanderbilt Cords I wore as a teenager going through my mother's clothes while being transitioned to a nursing home recently. So brave for her to give a personal interview with her son.
