I have been thinking about this very subject a lot lately. I am 74 years old, and have just developed a very strong desire to learn classical guitar. Now, if I face reality, as much as I want to be here long enough to attain the higher levels of technique and playing, I also have to accept that I may not have that much time left. So, instead of getting all morbid and upset, it has become obvious to me that I have to work to establish a mindset of really enjoying the day-by-day steps and training that is necessary. I plan to start a personal music journal of my efforts and to record not only the daily practise exercises, but also to record every little progress along the way to help keep me inspired. Did I find the exercises easier today? Was my tone better? Etc. And as I learn the necessary techniques, I am also going to add learning some non-classical songs that I have always loved and strive to play them with real feeling. I feel that this step is very important, because I not only want to learn good techniques; I also want to bring the music alive with feeling. . . . . and what better way to learn and to stay inspired than to include songs that really touch me, even if they are not in the usual classical repertoire?!

As a professional musician I happened to come across this video. I congratulate you on putting this into perspective. Everyone thinks they have to be great at what they are doing. Instead we should be enjoying what we do. I have been playing over 50 years and still learn something all the time. Trying to incorporate it can be frustrating at times but the challenge is fun

I feel you could explore some of the following topics in your quest for musical mastery: lifetimes quest: 1.Listen to music - all genres, historical periods and geography know your culture - the social context and musical vernacular 2. Entrainment - engage rhythmically (physical) with others 3.Develop physical skills - mechanics, control, stamina 4. Develop musical skills - literacy, aural, interpretation, historical practice 5. Develop musical knowledge - theory, etc 6. Create/curate your own musical identity - make your own compositions, arrangements and editions 7. Work with other musicians - duos, trios, ensembles, orchestras, singers, musicals, bands 8.Performance - Connect with your listeners 9.Share your knowledge - learn through explaining, teaching and demonstrating

I can get clarity and wisdom from Beatrix that applies to any subject. Beatrix, you have an amazing gift. You touch every relevant key, casually, that most never have been to or experienced, and never knew were there...though obvious if directed to them.

Deep and very true. It's one of the beautiful things about being a musician. Everything you experience and do in life ultimately has an effect on your playing. There is the technical side of course which you have to learn. But technique is only a tool. With modern learning tools a 10 year old can have the technical skills of a master (and you can watch that on social media). But only a master can use his technical skills to express the loss of his great love through the instrument. And that what music is about in my opinion. I'm a professional musician and while my technical skills have developed some over the past few years I didn't make big steps at all. But I have gained a lot of confidence and I can stand in front of an audience, alone, be relaxed and feel/express the atmosphere of the song. That makes a huge difference in what comes across, even though my technique isn't any different. But my technical skills have become more integrated with my as a human being, they have become more of an extension of me. And that's huge and exactly the reason why "child prodigies" only ever impress me, but never make me feel anything beyond that.

Guitar is so difficult. But the sound is so nice that one becomes addicted to it despite all the pain it takes to play even the easiest piece. So indeed, one has to enjoy the suffering... specially in the tips of the fingers.

Spot on, and perhaps your most important vid so far. Very important to listen to what\how we play and to "feel" the music and enjoy it, as opposed to just "getting it right technically." Also, mix things up and don't get stuck: Tarrega, Bach, Barrios, Dyens, Linnemann, and DIsney are all good, and even learning a small portion of the piece or movement qualifies. Find something we like and make it our own. David Jaggs does this all the time on his channel. He calls it "My take on it." 😎

I also do agree in your way of looking att playing in a wide meaning. Thinks that we have ta use all kind of senses and abilitys in our playing. Very interesting to listen to you! Both music and art comes from your soul. That's why when u play or paint. And stop thinking about what u do it becomes amazing.

Yes, that is a good and helpful way of thinking and practicing any kind of musical instrument, or any other craft. Problem is that, no matter how hard some people try to make us focus on stuff like ear training, melody etc, we still want to play scales at 260 bpm!

Killer work!

I've been playing for about 8 years and just picked up a classical guitar. My right hand is very good with fingerpicking and rhythm, but after all this time, I still struggle with fretting hand accuracy and moving across strings. It is very frustrating and it makes it hard to build confidence in learning things. Any advice on how to get my left hand on the same page after all these years?

A very important synopsis to learning an instrument of any nature, including voice. At the end of the day - music is about communication, expression of the soul and it is lovely to reach ones audience in that way.❤

mmmmmm Cross training? Always do it better then the last time you did it. ie, You go for a run in 10 minutes then next time you go for a run make it 1 second quicker.
