Kim here is something to consider before making any cuts at all on your beautiful roses. Have you ever wanted to plant more Knockout Roses in other places on your property, or wanted to share your beautiful roses with your friends? Look up videos on how to propagate new roses from your cuttings, It is so easy to do. I had a beautiful rose bush in my yard in California that was marbled yellow and red, it was gorgeous. I was able to clone that beautiful rose bush several times with just my pruned cuttings, 2Ltr soda bottles, and some potting soil and spread my love of that rose bush to several friends and family gardens before we moved. My family and friends still send me pictures of their roses and it makes my heart sing that I could share the love I had for the rose. Experienced rosarians say that the cut has to be higher, not immediately close to the exterior bud. Because when we cut, a part of that cut will dry and die and if it is so close to the bud it will affect it. Just cut a bit higher, about half an inch or so, just so the stem cut doesn't reach down to the bud we want to grow.

Thank you for an encouraging video. Roses frighten me. Historically, they have been difficult plants to grow. They are subject to so many problems that only the best gardeners had the magic touch with them, so I stayed away from them, but these Knock Out roses are easy to grow according to a friend. She planted six of them eight years ago. Said she does very little to them aside from water them. Said she planted them by more or less just throwing them into the ground. They are now virtual rose trees that are positively dripping in blooms. I am encouraged to try planting some. Do I have to test the soil first? The soil here is pretty clay-ee. I know they need a sunny location. I had no idea about how to prune them, I figured you just cut off anything that did not look right. I had no idea where to cut or that it should be at an angle. Any instructions you can give me to help me get some planted would be greatly appreciated. You sound like you may be in Texas where I am. Temps here are really HOT half of the year, and we have tremendous humidity. I have had some good success with Salvias which I love very much, but I long for rose bushes..... Thank you again! Very helpful explanation!!! I prune sometime in the fall and get a good 3 weeks of bloom in the springtime. It is now the end of May and it appears mine are diseased. Do you recommend to prune at this time to hopefully get them to bloom for the summer?

I’m so glad. Early spring is the best and then I usually prune twice while they are actively growing not a hard prune, but just going in and deadheading

Absolutely Beautiful!! I just got (2) 1 gallon Cherry Red Double Knockout Rose Bushes delivered today, Friday, 05-10-2024, from Home Depot. They are FINE!! How do I plant them, water them, and take good care of them? Do they have to be covered in the winter time before a freeze hits? I’m in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. Thank You!

MIne are starting to get way too leggy and they look bad at the bottom because theres no fullness - tops look good just the bottoms are way too leggy. Can I cut the rose back all the way to the ground next spring to kind of start over with it and will that make it bushier on the bottom? Tops look good but bottoms just look bare. (PS thank you for the tips on pruning properly!)
