It's watching the mistakes and the tweaking thereof which provides us mere bodgers the confidence to keep going. I used to wonder how many guitars I'd have to build before I got one right. Now I realise the dream of perfection may well be just that but in learning that all the stress and worry has gone and building guitars has become a pleasure, and damn good fun.

A large 45 degree chamfering router bit in the pillar drill does a fantastic job of making the initial carve on the neck profile. With the fingerboard slotted and glued in place, but not yet radiused , you have a stable flat surface to rest on the drill table. Use the highest speed available and take small cuts with each pass, adjusting the table upward in slight increments, until the 45 degree edge is within a 1/4 inch of the bottom surface of the fingerboard. This will give you a uniform starting point for your carve. My average time for producing a finished guitar neck is just under 2 hours.

I really love watching your neck carves- watching you use rasps, spoke shaves, and the Shinto saw rasp delight my soul to the core- almost as much as planes! Perhaps it's the sound as much as the visual- but it ultimately doesn't matter which. I love it, as always.

I know you’ve tried to make a lightest guitar but have you ever thought bout making the heaviest guitar possible? 😆 Food for thought for a future build 👌🏽 A literal heavy metal guitar! 🎸

One way to avoid routing gap, is to get masking tape(two times) around the pocket so the ring of the bit sits on masked template adding a fraction of extra wood to make a tighty tight fit

Ben- I know that you have been doing this for a living and have your ways…….next time you put a bit into your router, drop it completely down, then lift between 1/16 & 1/8”. Leaving too much shank exposed welcome’s vibration and the bit shifting therefore eating your precious work. Ran a production wood shop for a dozen years, had employees ruined results that taught me the hard way. Some put an oring on the shank to prevent completely bottoming which can deter removing, I just lift up a skosh rather than stocking o rings. The Triton bench sander looks exactly like what is marketed here as a Ridgid, but router is definitely different. The oscillating sander is a must for small shops. Worked two to death, but it took a while.

Enjoyed the video. One thing I do to help ensure a tight neck join is to put one or two layers of masking tape around the bearing of the router bit when routing the neck pocket. This should result in a neck pocket that needs some fine-tuning for the neck to fit. It can also allow for any final sanding of the neck heel. I think it would be interesting if you would discuss how much glued material (heel and neck pocket) is necessary for a stable glue join.

I'm not sure there is a 'gentle' side to a saw rasp. In my experience there's a side to take huge amounts of wood away at once, and a side that turns the entire project to sawdust.

I have to admit that I have real doubts about that neck joint... The only strong holding point is the bottom side of the neck which has been really weakened by cutting down the portion that goes into the pickup area of the body. To me it looked like there was no significant glue connection between the sides of the neck and the body in the joint area.

Ben! You may shoot me down in flames for my utter stupidity or hail me an unappreciated genius of rare deductive talent but couldn't you have solved the neck length problem but cutting a bit off the end of the heel and moving the bridge back slightly to preserve the scale length?

the only thing i could think is that maybe the pickup position would be changed and possibly not the best position tone wise. I also don't really know what I am talking about so could be completely wrong
@S-T-E-V-E
@S-T-E-V-E 2 жыл бұрын
@@bikesdrumsnstrings Yeah I thought about that but the Pickup doesn't have to be in a specific position, Johnny Marr had a Les Paul with 4 Humbuckers on it and a Strat with 9 single coils! 😂Some old archtop's came with a Pickup you could slide up and down on a rail from neck to bridge to get the perfect place you wanted!

Hmmmm Brave Man ... I would have been more than nervouse . to the piont of matching that neck with another body rather than retro fitting . It Could have been the posabley the bigining of two seperate guitars ...? Maybe what you did and branded a mistake was not a mistake at all ? Maybe It might have been a case of potentialy two guitars from one relitively minor eror . I had a neck from an Ibanez with a similar under pickup cut away . It had nuts that you would normaly use in a lounge to screw the legs into afixed to it ..... ? Naturaly I thought this odd . I had never seen this before or since . it was on a roadster 2 series neck . Not sure what year model , someone gave it to me . I had an 86 model roaster 2 Ibanez that had the standard fit neck . And I wonder if any one else has encounted this too ?

That's an interesting mistake. lol I'm curious how it's going to effect the tone. If I'm not mistaken, the pickups are positioned at particularly resonant parts of the string, right? So, is that neck pickup gonna have a slightly muddy sound? Honestly might sound good, I love muddy, swampy guitar tones. lol
