i’m pretty sure those paintings look so dark and earthy because the varnish has aged!
@imperialguard451
@imperialguard451 5 жыл бұрын
thats exactly why classical art pieces are always quite dark. if you watch some painting restoration videos when they strip the varnish and clean the painting its 500x brighter and the colors are much more vibrant. mona lisa looks as if they have never cleaned it (im not an expert its just very dark and looks dirty) and it would make sense as there’s only one and it could easily ruin the most prized piece of fine art in the world.
@annikania2682
@annikania2682 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, plus there are some pigments (especially the lead based ones) that change color and opacity with age, and even re-doing the varnish won’t bring the whites back
@reeda5390

wowjennawow the reason they haven't restored the Mona Lisa is because they don't want to accidently destroy it lol but some of de vincis students repainted the price and they've restored some of those so you can get an idea of what the painting originally looked like

Yes!!! It’s so nice to watch restoration videos and seeing how bright the colors actually are. Especially satisfying when they remove the old varnish on skin, and they go from weirdly yellowy to this bright cream color. And you can see the details, the blush on the cheeks and everything. It’s so fun to look at!!

I'm pretty sure the mona lisa used to have eyebrows they just faded away over time. Also a lot of older paintings do darken and yellow. Its actually caused by the varnish yellowing. When they restore paintings they sometimes remove the old varnish and it really makes a difference in the color of the paintings.
@TheMoonlightArtist

Yes the mona lisa used to have eyebrows. They have done scans of the painting where you still can see them apparently, but with time or do to careless restorations they have disappeared :) It must be so satisfying cleaning an old painting and seeing its original colors come back to life :D

They haven't restored or cleaned Mona Lisa because they know Leonardo used to experiment with his paints. They don't want to risk destroying one of the most famous pieces of art. At least that's what I was told by one of the people working in the museum, when I was watching a documentary about her.
@lalamoize

the dark, yellowy overlay is indeed from the aging! its from what they put over the oilpaints to protect it! you cant probably find all the paintings in the original colors if you google them. and the mona lisa did have eyebrows, but they faded so much you can see them anymore!

I think a lot of people would enjoy looking up the history of these paintings. The mona lisa especially is fun to learn about. It became one of the most famous pieces of art because it was stolen (a couple times) and as to the dark color of it that's because the Louvre refuses to restore the varnish because it got famous looking dingy. The colors would be so much better looking if they actually took proper care of it. Oil paintings need to have their varnish redone every so often. The darkness is actually just grime and dirt. Painting restorations are really important and they are fun to watch. Art history is fun and important :)

the reason the paintings look dark, especially the Mona Lisa, is because of dirt, dust, grime, soot, etc. layering and gathering over time on the painting. In reality most paintings are very bright but because of age and particles getting stuck to it, they often darken and yellow. Most get restored and cleaned, so we see the bright colors again.

No, this is not true at all. The identity of the Mona Lisa isn't sure, people suppose it's the wife of Francesco del Giocondo but they're not sure, and even the reason why he worked on the painting 4 years and never completed it. Leo then decided to keep it to himself continuosly working on it, till his death 10 years later. Don't spread misinformation.

She doesn’t have eyebrows because the artist wanted it to always look like she is looking at you from where ever you go I think
