Heena and Paresh Patel run one of San Francisco’s most exciting restaurants - Besharam, a Gujarati Indian fine dining establishment. The name Besharam means “shameless”, a trait that the family has used to great benefit in their journey. Moving from London to California in the 1990’s, they worked for over 20 years running a liquor store/flower shop, before finally earning a chance to run their dream restaurant, all the while raising two successful children and maintaining the family. Today they’re proudly shameless, serving an exclusively vegetarian menu that’s exciting and delicious.

This is where #Munchies excels at what it does best. Introducing a family that works together for the common good with respect for each members individuality -- the complete opposite of what I grew up in. Thanks to the Patel family for sharing their story and continued happiness and success (not just in business, but in life).

There aren’t a lot of Gujarati restaurants in the US let alone women owned, so it’s really cool to see it happen. I’m Gujarati American and feeling super inspired by this family. Wishing them all the best and planning to go their restaurant when I go to SF.

@@zarf4219 - definitely need to check it out when I’m next in town! Growing up, there were zero. It’s become a more recent thing in the last 10 years. I know there are pockets of places like Edison, NJ, Bensalem, PA, SoCal, however there are still a lot more northern and southern restaurants (which are also my favorites) around without having to travel far.

not really, "besharam" i think from her own perspective and experience the way she approached the story behind naming the place was more of her liberation by becoming more "shameless"- is the exact translation(i'm a hindi+gujrati speaker :), so noo its nowhere near "puta".

Most restaurants' chefs dont, its easier AND safer to wash hands more frequently than sanitize the gloves. If you don't "want anyone touching your food".... you'd kinda have to restrict to fast food chains only, where workers DO wear gloves as they are part timers that can't be trusted to do their job efficiently. Like, most pizzerias have chef spread/shape the pizza by hands afterall, most don't wear gloves while doing so.
