From Pink Floyd to Peter Gabriel, producer Bob Ezrin on the highlights of his career

In a career spanning nearly 50 years, Canadian record producer Bob Ezrin has been just as close to the heartbeat of the music as the musicians themselves. He's produced huge albums, like Pink Floyd's The Wall, wrangled some of the most colourful and challenging personalities in classic rock, travelled all over the continent and earned a spot in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In that time, he's worked on major records with Lou Reed, U2, Kiss, Nine Inch Nails, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper and many more.
Ezrin joined host Tom Power in the q studio to take us through the highlights of his unbelievable career, including one of the most notoriously troubled recording sessions ever with Pink Floyd, why his first gig as a producer for Alice Cooper "was like stepping into a Hieronymus Bosch painting," and why he once duct taped Peter Gabriel to a pillar.

Love the stories about Lou and Peter. Wish there was more on Alice Cooper. Totally got goosebumps along with you guys when Bob told the story of writing on Comfortably Numb and he read the lyrics that Roger threw down on the table.

His love and enthusiasm for his work is so obvious, even all these years later. Probably what made him a great producer. Also a very good storyteller.

Bob is far and away my favorite producer. I'm 49 years old and have a brother who's 8 years older. I would of course listen to his albums & read every word I could on the albums. I found his name on many of these albums. So I loved him before I even knew really who he was and what he did.

You know what? I did the same- listened to the music and memorized everyone's name printed on the cover. Felt it my duty to stay informed. I still do but very rarely as I remain close to the classic rock era🎶

On the Alice Cooper clip it would have been good to use a clip of the original lineup.... Bob Ezrin ? a national treasure and truly brilliant.

Brilliant interview and super engaging. This was like reading a favourite book about my favourite time period. I could listen to Bob Ezrin and Tom Power all day long. Great questions, great responses and very cool chemistry between them. Fun stuff. Well done Tom and CBC "Q" on capturing some music history with some Toronto connections.

Bob's long list of outstanding record productions is impressive . Some of my fav's are Peter Gabriel's first album, Lou Reed Berlin, Pink Floyd The Wall, Alice Cooper Love It To Death and others, so many to list. Bob did whatever worked for getting the best performance and the overall sound he and the band wanted. He just seemed to know what worked for the band and part of that is he really got to know them personally. He knew how to tap into aspects of their talent that had not been fully utilized on prev albums in this case. Great interview Tom.

Awesome summary of his entire career! Got inspired to toy around with the "Detroit Rock City" bass line (which seems to be his...) and, at the end of the day, I also had goosebumps when he read out the words for "Comfortably Numb", who wouldn't? Great interview!!!

Loved this interview. Tom has a way of making people loose and open. Not that Ezrin needed much prodding! This really flowed well. A joy to hear the background stories about amazing musicians’ work and processes, thanks to Bob many times.

Tom went to the CBC school of interviewers same breathless whispery style as Gian and George. Does anyone else talk like this in real life? Despite that enjoyed the interview and Bob Ezrin is a national treasure.

Lack of a producer like this...and the DIY digital recording is why modern records don't hold up. The producer is key to the recording and shaping the art.

Brilliant man!!!! Bob Ezrin has done so much, very impressive...Bob is from the Golden age of rock we will never see producers like him again...George martin, Phil spector, Quincy Jones, Bob Ezrin...today's music is terrible I listen to reruns of Kasey Kasem's top 40 countdown...

So, Bob Erzin literally made solo Peter Gabriel! He made Alice Cooper and he made PG. PG solo career remained basically the same like Bob built it 1977.

to me roger waters bass playing is why he knows how to make good music on top of that his voice and producing /all others members of pink floyd are Top musicians but roger solo albums tell a bigger story because no matter who he gets to play music like Eric Clapton , Jeff beck it pink floyd sound im hearing even the backup singer (Michael kamen )

Love Ezrin, only thing I object to is his insistence on using studio musicians over the band themselves sometimes (did this with Kiss, Alice Cooper, and others). Kiss were in love with the idea probably from him which resulted in things like their “reunion” album Psycho Circus which is hardly a reunion because of their ghost musicians used). That said Ezrin had such a signature style even Cooper’s albums like From The Inside which doesn’t have him basically copped his style. If I hadn’t known who this was and it was audio only I’d think the guy was in his thirties or forties. Hope he continues to produce damn well into his nineties!

There was no insistence Kiss wise. Ezrin only used Dick Wagner on Destroyer because Ace didn't take to Bob's regimented style and was AWOL playing poker when it came time to cut the solos to Sweet Pain and Flaming Youth. You can't cite that as the reason Paul insisted on ghost musicians for Psycho Circus. He (Paul) decided he did not want Ace or Peter in the studio whether or not their abilities were in question, such is Paul's level of control freakery.

Who was more difficult to work with, Lou Reed or Roger Waters and the rest of Pink Floyd? Sounds like Pink Floyd was more difficult but then again, I've heard rumors that Ezrin would smash up furniture in his pad after sessions for Berlin (fantastic album by the way).

Cool how he tells it like it is (was) with KISS. They were average musicians. Maybe a little below average. But they had desire and enough $ and help to make it.

I always knew this about KISS, but my favorite thing about Bob is that despite what KISS may say about each other, Bob always talks about how hard they worked and how much work they put into the record.

Barely skimmed over Alice Cooper, who deserved an hour interview in itself... yea there are plenty of bands/musicians Ezrin produced, but skimming over Alice Cooper was a huge let down...

i disagree with Mr. Ezrin here. One of the things we have lost and has cost us the most is the computerization of music. Music used to be about a group of artist who know their craft coming together and each adding something to make a whole. That is no longer the case and the music suffers from it. Today music biz does not have room for the community of music groups anymore. It's now one artist and a computer generating the sounds. Bob is being polite ..if he were to say "we made the best music" it would not go over well, Bob also did his best creative work when he was on drugs......some things you don't say on camera

I think that's more to do with music that Pink Floyd were making, rather than the production values . I know people who only rate them prior to DSOTM. They changed. Great interview.

Tom, this is pretty lazy. Not much to learn about Ezrin in this interview. Same old questions and stories. If you get another hour with Bob. Here are some questions............Ask him about his song writing credits on Alice Cooper and KISS recordings opposed to say Pink Floyd or Lou Reed and how much he contributed to receive a credit. Ask him about "The Elder"?. Ask him about his involvement and meetings with Axl Rose during the making of Chinese Democracy? Ask him if he seeks out artists to produce or waits to be called? Ask him why he hasn't produced anything of any signifigant worth passed his 30's apart from Revenge and Division Bell? Ask him if he ever finishes a project and isn't satisfied with it. The only thing I got from this is Pink Floyd wore matching leather coats and only worked til 6pm. The rest is all documented elsewhere
