Same with me. These early Bonds were just coming on telly for the first run when I was growing up. Saturday night family fun! I also saw the lesser Bonds (in my opinion) in the theatre with the family. I got the Corgi Lotus from The Spy Who Loved Me; it was one of my favourite toys 😁

SMERSH wasn't a syndicate. It was a name for a type of counter-intelligence units established within different branches of USSR military (like army SMERSH, navy SMERSH, etc.). And in reality SMERSH operated only for one year after the end of WW2. Also, the name is a result of creative shortening of Russian words meaning "death to spies" Just a little "The More You Know" for y'all.

"He doesn't notice they're being followed by one of Alan Arkin's disguises from Wait Until Dark." That's EXACTLY what I thought! Always listen for the squeaky shoe... EDIT: It's not the easiest exploding helicopter ever. That would be the ecstasy helicopter from "Exit Wounds", Steven Seagal's last(?) cinematic outing (honestly not sure about that, but DMX and Michael Jai White are in it, so I'm not complaining.) One bullet in the big yellow smiley face symbol on the door and it goes up like Hemel Hempstead. I'm sure there's a moral there somewhere (connected with drug dealers who paint giant ecstasy symbols on the doors of the helicopters they're trying to covertly smuggle their product in), but I'm not sure what it is.

From Russia with Love had to undergo an Absurdly Short Production Time because the producers had already set a release date and started filming just six months in advance, and they had to face problems such as a boat full of cameras sinking into the Bosphorus, a helicopter falling into a lake (with the director inside!) while location scouting, and co-star Pedro Armendáriz being diagnosed with terminal cancer and then committing suicide during the shoot. The shooting schedule was changed in an attempt to complete his scenes, but his condition worsened quickly enough that scenes were left unfinished when he was in too much pain to work.
