Fun fact: the scene where Bond puts a helmet on before using the jetpack was done very last-minute (it's why it's not shot on location) because the guy who actually flew the jetpack refused to do it without a helmet, so they had to grab Sean Connery and get a shot of him putting a helmet on to match continuity-wise.

I grew in The 60s and SCUBA was brand new tech. Space-age stuff. Hell, even underwater filming was new. It was pretty much only seen in Jacque Coustuo tv specials. In The 60s comics, they had whole comic titles named after SCUBA divers. They were known as frogmen.

Read the book, it was a fantastic thriller that moved at a great pace. But I was always curious what Thunderball meant. Looking into it, Thunderball was a slang term from Atomic Testing in the 1950s Fleming overheard. But the far more interesting story about Thunderball is the Kevin McClory Saga and the tangled legal battle for decades over the rights to Thunderball and McClory's never ending attempts to make his own Bond leading to Never Say Never Again

Seeing the ABC Thunderball commercial reminds me of how into the 1980's it was a big deal when a movie was airing on TV, and the James Bond films were big ones. Video Rental was getting easier, but we we still dependent on the TV schedule. Much of my early James Bond came from these network TV airings. Due to them being recent, often new, the Roger Moore bonds were seen most often. For that reason I saw the least of the Connery Bond and it felt like a treat to view them. I didn't end up seeing all of them as a kid, and Thunderball was one I never saw. Apparently I was busy during this airing on May 8, 1986. Expo 86 had just opened and I know we went there early. I certainly saw Never Say Never Again again and again due to Cable. Kids don't know better. As video became cheap and cable became plentiful the rarity of everything went down. TBS had 15 days of 007 so that everything was shown more often. Now, nobody cares when a movie is showing on TV. As much as I never, ever want to watch a movie with commercials in it, I still have nostalgia for the feeling. We always remember the good parts.

The scene where Bond arrives for his mission briefing with the other 00 agents was originally going to have cameos from the stars of other spy shows and films - Patrick Macnee as John Steed, Roger Moore as Simon Templar, Michael Caine as Harry Palmer, Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, James Coburn as Derek Flint, Robert Culp and Bill Cosby as Kelly Robinson and Alexander "Scotty" Scott etc. Due to budgetary and logistics concerns, this was scrapped.
