I agree with a lot except the tap out/complain thing. I think a lot of people receiving tattoos are always too afraid to speak up when they are uncomfortable and then really bad things happen like they pass out or freak out and I think people need to have honest, open communication with their artist and understand it’s your body, you can say stop whenever!! I have an incredible artist and I have sat for mannnnny 7-8 hour sessions but my last one I was sitting with my legs up getting my bicep done and I was sitting on a huge nerve in my butt/leg and at one point, despite eating and being very hydrated I felt dizzy like I was going to pass out,. I knew I wasn’t tapping out but I told my artist I needed a break and to stand, immediately as I stood up the blood went rushing back to my leg so I must have just been sitting on something for too long without being able to stretch. My artist was obviously all good with it and we took 15 mins to stretch, bathroom etc. so I think people need to understand communicating what you need with your artist and knowing you can say, hey I feel nauseous, hey I feel like I might pass out… that’s not complaining… alwayssss tell your artist!!!

I do tip but I don’t think it should be necessary for someone who makes $100, $200, $300+ an hour. Tipping is for jobs where people usually have to rely on the tips to survive like waitstaff. You wouldn’t tip your therapist or your lawyer lol

As someone who has two good friends who have done my entire upper body and 80% of my legs I tend to agree we just sort of pay by the session I really can't stand hourly rates I've been in plenty of shops where the artist will go take a smoke break a phone call etc, just tell me what it's going to cost to finish up front then it's up to me and you to decide if that's okay it takes the pressure off of the client watching the clock just my opinion

@@Shinigamij66 Legit question: Why not add those costs to the bill? When I do a repair, I bill for parts, labor, any fuel or oil, and miscellaneous shop supplies. That way I don't need to rely on a tip that a customer may or may not be willing to give.

I understand tipping if the artist works at the studio, they're giving a piece to the owner of the shop. Fine. But if the artist OWNS the shop and told you a price, why am I supposed to give them more than they charged? Not being rude, I genuinely don't get it. Theres a lot of shop-owners on this channel, and I hear this a lot. Just tell the client what you want for the work, so nobody is insulted or confused.

Tattoos hurt. I don't complain but I am expressive when I am feeling a lot of pain. I know it shows on my face and I tense up on the really painful parts (though I take care to not move the part getting tattooed) I don't think it's a big deal. Maybe my artists do but they don't say anything? My tattoos have all healed fine. I do have a rule now of maximum of 4 hours in chair because if I go for too long I end up having a really bad couple days after for recovery (I've got chronic illnesses and too much stress on my body is just not a good idea for me). But still, I love my tattoos and it's worth it for me to work through it.

I just got the lineart of a large coverup done and definitely agree with there’s a big difference between “complaining” and actually just communicating about your pain level. I had to tap out at about 4 hours and there was just no way I could keep going, it burned so bad every time he started doing some of the fill and it was definitely a different level of pain than the regular “tattoo discomfort”. I tipped my artist personally, definitely not the “20% standard” but I gave him some extra. He only charges for the actual sitting tattoo time but I know they spent quite a bit of time drawing/re-drawing things for the design. I’m sure the time for that is factored into the pricing but I appreciated his time and talent and just wanted to as a nice gesture.

I have an issue with the don't complain one, there are lots of reasons to communicate that you're in pain, even if you don't need to tap out. I'm autistic, and have adhd, for me talking about the pain always helps. I'm not going to stop doing what I need to, because my tattoo artist potentially can't be professional enough to handle their feelings, about my pain. Sometimes that complaining even comes in forms of jokes, because jokes are calming, and a big way many people cope with pain. So everything said about that, is fairly ignorant, and doesn't take the clients feelings into account at all. I can agree with excessive or constant complaining being wrong to do, but the rest is just wrong

Honest question, but what is the point behind tipping your tattoo artist? As far as I know, which isn't too much to begin with, the amount of money you usually pay for a tattoo is already expensive as is, so what the point of the tip? is it supposed to be like an unofficial kind of part of the bill overall, or is it more of a courtesy like most standardized tipping? Might seem like a troll comment, but I am just genuinely curious.

@@rect7840 I understand it's annoying when clients come in asking "how much for so and so", but on the other hand, if you have your hourly rate stated clearly, the client can already make an estimation to see if the artist works in their price range. It would have avoided unnecessary time spent on consultation like in your example. I don't know why tattoo artists are always so vague about that. Give your rate, do the consultation, estimate the time it will take and thus the cost. It would make everything so much easier for everybody

I actually can not believe ppl go get a tattoo without showering beforehand, like....WHAT? HOW? WHY? Another quick tip I learned the hard way, DO NOT APPLY SELF TANNING LOTION OR FOAM (even the daily self tanning lotion) THE DAY BEFORE OR DAY OF A TATTOO Idk how, but me and my artist really think the tanning lotion fucked with the color of my ink in some places and I had to get it retouched a few weeks later bc the light colors looked dirty.

I am not tipping an artist unless it's flash or is some deal thing. I pay 150-200 an hour, no bitching or quibbling, with 6 hr min. and what you charge is what you get. Sorry not sorry. How do expect to get a tip on a hundreds of dollars tattoo, what would that even be? If it was $700, 10% would be $70, that's a hell of a tip.
@Inkd6

I don't think you're taking into consideration that most artists only keep 50% of their earnings and a lot of what artists make gets reinvested into our supplies which is definitely not cheap. On top of that, your tattoo may be 6 hours but it's not like the design magically appeared, it takes a lot of time to get good at art and after that they spend hours coming up with a design that fits the clients needs and placement. If that's too much for you then find yourself a cheap inexperienced artist

As an artist who sells acrylic paintings; you need to factor that into your price and ask what you want. Don't be mad or disappointed when you get paid the price you ask for at the end of the of the session.

@@Inkd6 TATTOO SUPPLIES ARE A BUSINESS WRITE OFF COME TAX TIME. SO THAT IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR A TIP.
@Inkd6
@Inkd6 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fartylipjuice well since you bring it up, on top of usually only getting 50% of the total price of the tattoo another 30% of that goes towards taxes. tax write offs help but they don't completely solve the fact that you're still contributing a lot the earnings towards other revenues. Nobody supplies us with our needles, inks, tubes, aftercare, machines, power supplies, etc all of which are very expensive. we don't make hourly, our only income is through appointments and walk ins. Bottom line, we're specialists and our experience and work is something you can't replicate without proper training and years of experience, if the price is too much then you're not worth the artists time.

I don't know where you live but in states like California, Florida etc... its quite normal and common. That all being said, I always wear socks with shoes. My question is what's up with the folks wearing socks with slides & sandals, it defeats (no pun intended) the purpose.
