Jesse Reeves is a songwriter, musician, church planter, and father. As a songwriter, he has co-written several songs that are sung in the church around the world today including “How Great is Our God,” “I Speak Jesus,” “Our God,” “I Will Rise, “Lord, I Need You,” and more.
As a musician, Jesse spent 17 years leading worship, touring and playing bass guitar in the Chris Tomlin Band. As a church planter, Jesse and his wife, Janet, have been a part of planting The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Tx and Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He and Janet have four children and live in Austin, Tx, where they pastor a network of house churches called KingsPorch.
In this episode, I sit down with Jesse to talk about his rise to success in the Christian worship world, his burnout and dechurched experience, and how God rebuilt a robust faith and love for the church in Jesse's heart.

I love the Divine Liturgy historical Holy Spirit led worship. I also love Christian rock. Would you interview Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf? For me I appreciate Christian who make music not so much Christian worship outside of Holy spaces because we already have a historical apolstic canon of Worship. Ie. Divine Liturgy e.g

Listened to this on Spotify. It was really good. Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel's book, the Way of the Dragon, the way of the lamb really speaks well to what Jesse is talking about. Preston it would be cool to have them on the podcast.

Question... When I listen to such great century-old hymns like 'Holy, Holy, Holy' or 'Praise to the Lord, the Almighty' am I not listening to 'Christian' music???

Yup. "Worship Music" was around long before the 90s too. Centuries even. I was in Christian Radio in the 90s and 00s and yeah we played Worship Music day and night (what do we think songs like "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" and "Thy Word" are??). That CCM/Tomlin sound eventually gained popularity in the 00s and people shifted. I think the guest sounds like an wonderful Christian man to be clear -- and I assume he'd be a blast to jam with (I remember Between Thieves!!) But it feels like he's made himself push from one trendy church extreme to another.

There is something that seems just so very wrong with 'monetizating' the worship of Almighty God!!! This is so detestable! The very concept of a 'worship 'industry' certainly says it all to me Preston!

It's kind of cynical to take everything appealing and deliberate about a worship production and lump it into "manipulation". IMO if something isn't free, it isn't ministry. But that's me. "Performing" HAS to be about the hearts and motives of the people performing. I'm a graphic designer who has done countless church logos, sermon series slides, bulletin covers, campaign graphics, promotions of events and services, etc. Am I manipulating people by trying to evoke certain emotional feeelings and connotations in them by using certain colors, or typefaces, or photos? I know those "tactics" work, because they work whether I am designing a church project or a Hells Angels t-shirt (which I actually did yesterday). Or am I just using what talent God gave me? Is it insincere? Am I trying to impact the world positively for the Kingdom? No one can know that from the outside. I attend a church of 50 that meets on camping chairs on an indoor soccer field, so this is not a megachurch member defending "big production" church. We have no programs. I don't even believe churches need to own a building, and most probably shouldn't IMO.
