It must have been around that time when I first discovered Virgil. It was revolutionary and drumming has never been the same since. Thank you Mr Donati.

As much as I agree with him changing the landscape, this is pretty horrible music.

Terrific. This is the Virgil era I miss - telepathically interactive, bombastic but not metal, before he went off completely into the realm of pure mathematics. There's a groove and a playfulness and a humanity in this stuff that I can't find in the new music. Mind you, every artist has to walk his own path and follow his own inspiration.
@DeanWuksta4 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t agree more, he can switch genres quite comfortably, but I feel he is in the moment here and more reactive, his later stuff seems odd time for the sake of it, I recently saw him in clinic.

Agree with this statement... Virgil is capable of put swing and groove in his play, but currently he prefers to play intricate stuff...
@EsaelPaggin0244 жыл бұрын
You can't find it in the new stuff because it's new, uncharted territory. It's there.. just expressed in different forms. Show some humility.

Great playing and soloing. I love the older clips of virgil. The stick twirling days were great. I think i first saw him in the 90's sometime back in Sydney. I noticed Virgil had to pull his hi hat stand back twice in the video. I remember on the pearl kit at church that I used to play i could never get the hi hat stand to stay put. Had to put a sand bag in front of it. My single braced Yamaha would never move an inch. Just an observation.

I believe Virgil's Dad was a milk man who delivered milk back in the day to Alan Holdsworths mother ! They are two peas in a pod ! Thank you for changing drumming in the exact same way Alan Holdsworth changed Guitar. THANK YOU VIRGIL ! Peace from Detroit MI. That was my attempt at humor.

Virgil you remind me of Buddy Rich with your high energy soloing. Also that left hand you got going just like Buddy. Doing shit that can barely be seen with the naked eye. Always busy doing something. Hell you could smoke most drummers with just your left hand.

Too cool and creative for Dream Theater 😊 Hey Virgil, if youre reading this, what was your mindset heading in the audition? Did you genuinely wanted it 100% like Mangini or was it like "meh whatever" like Roddy, Minnemann, and the rest?

Truly amazing playing. He is so damn fluid and fast. Gracefully kicks the drum set's ass. Just amazing . That soloing he does at the end is so awesome. I always wonder how the rest of the band keeps time while goes off into polyrhythm la la land. They must be good because the drummer is doing some serious off beat shit. Where the hell is 1?

I think it's really odd when majority of drummers each time increase detalization, double-triple tempo while the soloist starts playing fast passages and sequences! It only diminishes the solo's awe, ruines the foundation, on which cute solo accents are built and takes attention and appreciation from soloist to a drummer. I'd rather hear a solid, maybe a bit differently arranged accents or the hole rearranged drum loop during the spinnind solo notes, but still not looking like drum extension. Even it feels not ethically correct, but not musical either! Sorry, Virgil! You are still the best, but sometimes it is too shallow.
