In this video, I convert a Vinyl LP Record to digital files and CD using the software title Audacity and apply Pop, Click, & Noise Reduction after recording a scratched LP!
This was done for someone with a deeply personal album, but no way to play it. I start with a good cleaning using the Spin Clean record washer. The record had some scratches with resulting impulse noise, so I use Audacity tools to reduce the pops and clicks for a better listening experience.
The ART Artcessories USB Phono Plus encodes at 16bit, selectable between 44.1KHz and 48kHz. I chose 44.1kHz, as this is the sampling rate for CDs, and I am providing a CD to the person who provided this record to encode. 24 bit audio and higher sampling rates are not an option with the ART interface.
Gear used on this video include:
Spin Clean Record Washer

Sleeve City Anti-Static Carbon Fiber Brush
GLi Pro SL-2500 Direct Drive Turntable
Shure M97xE Phonograph Cartridge
ART Artcessories USB Phono Plus Audiophile PreAmplifier / Interface

HP ProBook 6470b
Ryzen 5 2600X with ASRock B450 motherboard desktop
Software Includes:
Audacity 2.2.2 (HP ProBook)
Audacity 2.3.2 (Ryzen 5)

I thought about tagging this with some "before" and "after" results on some music tracks, but it was already getting pretty long at 11 minutes. If you would like to hear some of this, let me know in the comments, and I will do a "part 2".

Very helpful video, thank you for posting it. Digitized my first record today, and this was a great guide. The end result turned out a little crackly, but the record itself was relatively old.

Nice video, thanks! My process looks something like this. Basically, I do some manual click repair if there are any really big ones (I can get in down to the nano-second and delete the whole click without having the repair heard at all). Then I'll run the de-click plug in from the software. I let it auto-find the thresholds and that does a great job of taking care of the rest. After that I get into my Noise Reduction plug-in and take a noise sample of the very front of the record where the needle is just gliding in the groove before any music starts (the dead wax). I will apply that with a 70% reduction to the first half of the first side, then repeat the process by taking a sample of the dead wax at the end of side one and applying that to the last half of the first side. The process happens the same for the second side. The reason I split it up like that is because the wax and needle tracking at the front of the record is slightly different than at the end of a side, so I try to get the most accurate sample I can to eliminate from that particular part of the record (yes I'm THAT guy). Anyway this eliminates just the surface noise from under the music, without doing any damage to the desired audio. (Well, of course there are very minimal compromises, but they're inaudible to our ears anyway). Lastly I will go in between songs and execute a fade-out just slightly earlier than the original fade-out (if there is one), and then mute out (silence) all of the in-between space until the next track starts up. When I'm finished, in the final product we never hear the needle or surface noise at all, just the music punching through. "Why not just buy the CD?" is a great question, and as a rule, if I own an original pressing of a particular album in both vinyl and CD there's no need to rip the vinyl really, the disc is ideal. But if the only CD available is a re-master done between 1998 and yesterday, it's probably brickwalled and squashed like Wile E. Coyote under an anvil. In that event, the dynamic range of an original record (anything pressed before 2000) is going to be more desirable to prevent ear fatigue and just having a more pleasant listening experience. So it's worth it to do a rip. Or, if I don't own the album on CD at all, then yeah I'll rip it. Of course, if the vinyl itself was abused badly then really there's nothing you can do for it and you have to go find the CD. But 90% of my records I bought new myself and originally ripped straight to cassette to listen to, so they've only been out of the sleeve once or twice the whole time. Some I purchased used, but only after careful inspection that it was in decent shape. Quick note, now that vinyl is hot again everything new is in that format: Often new records are cut from the same digital masters as the CD's and downloads. So though the dynamic range can be slightly better on wax, usually there isn't a whole lot of audio quality to be gained by buying new vinyl which is about 2-3 times more expensive than a CD. So yes, I'm thrifty lol! I will sometimes though if I find a great deal. Because if we're being honest, vinyl has a much higher fun-factor. Last year Walmart was having a half off sale on their records, so I picked up a few, like Load and Re-Load, the new Slash album, etc. and then ripped those just for fun. I have to say that I was really impressed with those pressings. Listening and then looking at the waveform, those were probably the cleanest and quietest vinyl I've ever heard on my turntable.

One thing that I do now is, at the very beginning of the entire recording, I find where the record starts (usually where the needle drop happens), select that and go to just before the first song starts. I then Amply the highlighted section to its absolute maximum level and use that for the Noise Reduction. It works for me, even if I have to increase volume levels after.

Good demo. Next step would be manual repair of clicks, really time consuming. Also, if you click the pull-down menu at the top of the blue area to the left of the track, select "multi view" to see waveform and spectrogram at the same time. Spectrogram will let you see more clearly the effects upon the audio information of the different steps you apply.

The AT LP60 is a pretty good choice for a budget fully automatic belt-drive turntable for folks who want built-in preamplification. The turntable used in this video is a GLi Pro SL-2500, a manual direct drive that is similar to the AT LP120, but lacks a built in USB pre-amp.

ThriftyAV What I love ❤️ about the Audio Technica turntables is that they have buttons to lift and lower the tonearm and they have dust covers to protect the record. What I heard about them is that with the rubber slip mat they come with can sometimes sound static and some people recommend a cork mat

I use sound forge to filter out crackling and clicks and it works great. If you do it correctly you don’t hear any clicks or crackle at all. Plus it does t take away from the quality of the song. It’s a great program but unfortunately not free like audacity. But audacity is good to bc I use it but for the records that have many clicks, pop, and crackling I go to sound forge

You seem to have better stereo separation than my all-in-one USB turntable. As far as click editing goes, I play it back manually and use 66 threshold and 40 width over a short area for fastest editing. Although you need to play the record twice (once to record, once to playback/review), I find it the best compromise between speed and quality. CD-style quality will require more editing time almost to the point of you might as well find the CD in the first place, 200 threshold etc. is superfast but nowhere near sensitive enough to give a good recording IMO.

I have a question some vinyl rips on the internet have frequencies that reach 48KHZ, although the Styli\\cartridges that were used to rip have a frequency response of only (20HZ-20KHZ) how ?
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 2 жыл бұрын
Rated vs measured frequency response for cartridges (and styli) are not always the same. With rated response, the high end represents the top frequency prior to dB rolloff. In other words, the cartridge may be able to reproduce frequencies above 20KHz, but the dBV rms drops off at those frequencies.

Maybe I missed something..... But how do you get Audacity to detect the input from the turntable? Can I use a preamp from my home theater? What cables aside from usb do I need? The title of this video is from vinyl to file yet after watching this video I still have absolutely no idea how to do that! Perhaps maybe explain how you do it before going into some of the more advanced options.
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 3 жыл бұрын
The cabling you need depends on your setup. With the pre-amp featured in this video, I need RCA with ground wire from the turntable to the preamp, then USB to the PC. When using a USB audio device, Windows sets that device as the default; therefore, it becomes the default device for Audacity. Yes, you can use a phono preamp from a receiver, but things get more complicated. You have to use a line level output on the receiver. These can usually be found on a tape loop or EQ loop. These will be RCA jacks. In a pinch you can you a headphone output, usually a 1/4" TRS jack, but some level matching will be required to prevent overmodulation. On your computer, you will need a LINE level (not mic level) input on your computer. Many laptop computers lack line level inputs, but most desktop computers have them. This input will be a TRS mini jack, so you will either need an adapter cable that has the right kind of plug on each end, or have adapters. Audacity has a pretty good tutorial on how to select your audio device if the correct device is not automatically selected. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_selecting_your_recording_device.html

Hi, great video my friend, can I use this with my Reloop Spin Portable Turntable, & my smartphone, wich is an " Android LG Stylo 4 ", so that I can use a music DAW sort of app, on my LG Stylo 4 smartphone, wich is what is holding all of my MP3's, & AIFF or WAV. files basically. So that my phone would be kind of like Serato DJ, on a computer, but instead, it would be a similar app to Serato DJ, but running on my phone, wich is where all my music is anyways, besides my Skratch vinyl records I've been collecting, & also instrumentals, as well, im sort of new with the skratch DJing, & always learning something new everyday. But, I've made sure that my phone is " OTG ", compatible, & also supports Bluetooth 4.0, as well. Wich are both needed, in order to utilize the two devices I've recently invested in. Its called Mixfader, wich is a wireless cross-fader, Bluetooth 4.0, & then ive got a Mixfader Prolink SoundCard, wich is basically like a mini mixer for portable DJ's. Ive been able to get both the Mixfader, & Mixfader Prolink running connected to eachother, with my turntable, but havent been able to successfully get those and my phone all simultaneously connected, so that I can utilize the app that came with the Mixfader crossfader set up for my portable turntable, wich is called " Mixfader App ", & its supposed to give you an option between wether your using" Vinyl ", or " DVS ", wich is" Digital Vinyl ", basically. So, ive been able to get the Mixfader crossfader, & the Mixfader Prolink connected to eachother, & then use them with my portable turntable, with my actual " Vinyl Skratch " records, but, its supposed to also have my phone connected with the app running, & connecting with both devices, nsync, so that when its connected correctly, the first thing that pops up on your phones screen is wich mode, VINYL or DVS, wich is digital vinyl (timecoded-records). Lol.. So im reaching out,asking peeps if anyone knows how to accomplish this set up, or wether I should just invest in the " OMNI Portable Turntable " , by " Headache Sounds Electronics ", & it has all this built rite into the turntable instrument. And you can simply switch between DVS MODE, or REGULAR VINYL MODE, either Serato DJ, or some DAW runs it for that mode, & you can also have it in REGULAR VINYL MODE, and simply use your actual skratch vinyl, or whatever vinyl you desire. But, have ability to basically record your vinyl to digital, to protect all your actual Vinyl, so no matter what, you'll never lose your own music collection,wich is great!... But thanks for your video, & was hoping to shed some light on this thing im trying to solve,thanks again.......👍💪🙏🔥💯🎄

Aledo High School, Aledo, TX. You need some type of phono preamp. You can find them for as little as $18 or use a phono stage built into a receiver. You need a recording device with line level inputs. Most desktop computers have this. Some laptops have this.

what are the equiptments needed? Given is the turntable, and the laptop... But what are the other equiptments needed? 'From the amplifier ; cable with usb? Do you connect the aux out directly to the mic of the laptop ? ? Or aux out to usb of laptop? Or do you need a gadget between the turntable and laptop? Thanks for your reply.
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 3 жыл бұрын
The "gadget" I used between the turntable and laptop in this video is a USB Phono Plus pre-amplifier. I ran a USB2 cable from the pre-amp to the laptop. Some turntables have RCA wires and a ground built in. If your turntable has RCA jacks instead of pigtail wires, you will need your own stereo RCA cable and a ground wire (lamp cord, etc) between the turntable and pre-amp. The turntable should have a moving magnet style cartridge. I would also suggest external speakers for the laptop, as built-in speakers are usually not very good. A power strip is also handy with multiple powered devices. With this USB setup you do not need to use aux or mic connections.

If your turntable does not have a built-in preamplifier, you will need some type of phono preamp. They sell outboard phono pre-amps. Also, many receivers have built-in phono preamps.
