“Make the decision” really is a huge hurdle for me. I’m really passionate about this industry and my peers say I should get into VO but man… the fear of the unknown and trying to leave my comfort zone is really a challenge that I’m fighting to overcome. I’m going to do this because I want to live my life doing something I truly love. Thanks for this video and I hope whoever else stumbles upon this comment the best of luck in your VO journey!

I'm with you in that boat. The fear of the tech side of the house is holding me back...I think I've been in too many VO groups where (mostly men) folks are all gung ho about the tech stuff and I've felt intimidated. However, I think that's just stuff they are loving to do and not all that necessary. Come one, friend...let's jump into VO together! We can do this!

New sub! 👍🏻 really liked this video. I have a BA in Music, with Singing as my main instrument but I got into it because I wanted to work on my voice and this line of work really appeals to me. Could be one of my dreams actually, to be able to voice cartoon characters, anime maybe, movies, etc. So thanks for all this!

Thanks! And that’s so amazing you already have a BA in music and singing! Honestly, it wouldn’t be a difficult move from where you are currently, into Voiceover. Singers pick it up really quickly! Go for your dreams! You got this!

I’m curious about how you tackled your other financial obligations during the process since you didn’t have your club manager job. How did you handle rental costs for your apartment? Did you move into a friend’s house or something during those months? Thanks!
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 8 ай бұрын
Great question! I had enough of a severance package to survive with rent and groceries for 2 months, which bought me some time. I was also able to secure another manager job in another club at the end of month 2, and with Voiceover combined by the end of month 3 I was back on track and by month 4 I didn’t even need the new job, due to Voiceover exploding, but I kept it to pay off debt and putting a bunch of saving away!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, i am exactly in the same position as you when you started voice over, i work most of my life as musician piano player, did it for years my grand father was a radio moderator so is in my dna, i really want to get into voice over, is a bit scary for me because english is not my first language i speak english and spanish, going to follow your advice of getting the senheiser mkh416 the question is, what is your audio interface and mic preamp? what you recommend?
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 11 ай бұрын
Speaking both English and Spanish is an advantage! Even if you have an accent in English that’s not a problem, and you can work that out if needed. My interface is an Apollo Twin, it’s about $1000 and the reason I have it is because it has some amazing plug-ins that you can buy that emulate famous channel strips. But a great starter interface is the Scarlett 2i2 for about $100

Hey I'm struggling and I wanted to know if you had a demo when you started?
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 5 ай бұрын
I made my own demos! I didn’t get a professional demo until 5 months in, and I paid for it entirely from income in voiceover. Rule of thumb, if you can’t pay for a professional demo ($1500-$2000) entirely with VO income, you are probably not ready to record. It should last you for years. I’ve used my first pro one for the past 7, and it’s still great, but had I recorded one too early I would have had to do it again. You do NOT need a pro demo to get VO work. I use it mainly for getting an agent, and my agent selling me to casting and clients, and if it’s a really good one, you can get straight offers. But start by making your own, as best you can, and booking work and getting experience.

Hi Jesse. I'm from the UK. A question: Is there anywhere to get auditions that don't need a Pro Demo. (I've been told I need one before I start by my coach) but I can't afford her prices. DIY work?
@jessecarrollvoiceovers

You don’t need a pro demo! Not at the beginning anyway. Your coach is just trying to sell you one.RUUUUUNNN!!

And yes, you can get auditions on Bodalgo, Voices, and Voice123 all without a pro demo, but you’ll need DIY demos, lots of good ones

@jessecarrollvoiceovers Thanks for responding. And, I thought as much. Haha. I'm gonna leave it. I've got all the knowledge I can from the course (which was frankly a little disappointing). Imma just get involved then. My pal that has a homegrown record label said he'd record if I write my own scripts. Wonderful. I'm also just gonna get auditioning before that's done. Get that practice in. Thanks again for the advice and feedback. I'm feeling more positive now. 👊💚

Haha, if you mean who as in which animation or video game characters, I don’t do animation and have a small amount of indi games, I do mostly commercial and tv doc narration. Should be pretty easy to find what I’ve done in voiceover, literally just google my name, or just go to my website jessecarrollvo.com , and the show I narrate on history channel is called backroad truckers
