Every time I listen to a VO podcast, the sound levels are correct. Great video. Never heard it put this way.

Hey Jesse, fellow full-time voice actor here, and I agree with you 1000%! I also tried the cold outreach thing for a while because so many coaches out there are saying that's the way to go, but it just felt like a big waste of time as you put it. I started using that time instead to audition like a madman, and not only did I start getting more work, but I'm getting tons of practice in! Thanks for the confirmation, and keep up the great content!

That’s exactly my story! I even went so far as to hire an assistant to double up on the emails sent. I read books on effective cold email, implemented tried and true business strategies… almost no response… then I started talking to my clients… they get around 10 emails a day from voice actors… most with terrible demos, poorly written emails and half baked websites… and most of the time they don’t even have a job to give a voice actor even if they wanted to. So, now they just ignore all the emails and work with who they already know, or find from casting sites. This was like a lightbulb to me. Why am I trying to get cold leads, when most the time my emails will be ignored because of the volume they get, when I could just audition for “hot” leads who do want to hire someone right now, and THEN keep in touch with them once I’ve booked a job and worked with them… when I email my clients that I’ve worked with to stay top of mind and market to them, my emails do not only have a 100% open ratio, they always get a response.

Hi Jesse, yup you got your like and Sub from me. I've been in the VO business for nearly 20 years, I've just started back up after a 6 year break and this whole marketing thing is a new challenge for me, so thank you for your words of advice.

The phrase, "There is nothing more effective than auditioning" should be the mantra played on a constant loop in VO actor's brains. Even if you don't win the job (which is mostly the case) you get at least 2 great benefits: 1) Your audition may resonate with casting for a future job and 2) Your constantly exercising your instrument.

Your genuine enthusiasm resonates well- Too many others (some call them "gatekeepers") are full of negativity and how difficult this is (unless, of course, we purchase their training courses!)...

Exactly!! Haha. Thanks for the feedback. The number one rule of marketing to to make someone fear something, then sell them the solution. I make my money from voiceover, not coaching, I just happen to love coaching. I do sell my coaching my service so it’s worth my time, but I do tell people ALL THE TIME, they can get there on their own, I can just help get you there quicker if you want. There are no gatekeepers in this industry, it’s a massive red flag if someone claims to be. Also, next time someone claims to be a reputable coach, google them… see how much VO work they’ve done, or if there’s any press on them at all, look them up on Voices and Voice123 and see how many jobs they completed, read their reviews. They may be a good coach, lots of people coach who aren’t able to find success at VO themselves, but I’d rather work with someone who actually walks the walk.

you know whats interesting about this? Just yesterday I spent maybe 4 hours diggin into direct marketing. I passed on auditions for most of the day because "I need to do this!" This video changed my perspective entirely. thanks

My pleasure! And that’s exactly my point! Why spend the day sending emails that mostly won’t get looked at when you could spend the day auditioning for real jobs that will definitely good heard and possibly booked. Cold email is not the best use of time, however marketing to and staying in touch with clients you’ve already worked with is!

Mannnnnn I really needed this video today. Just went full time this year and had been a bit down on myself due to my lack of coaching, wondering if I made the leap of faith too soon (even though I've never had an issue with booking consistently). Thank you for telling me what I needed to hear, and you definitely got a new subscriber my man!

Thanks man! And when you go full time, you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Don’t second guess your decision just work like crazy so you make sure it was the right one, don’t leave it to chance. Keep going!

OK, I'll bite. I will be jumping into medical voice work soon (website is in the works, etc.). You push auditions rather than direct marketing. I would love to! Soooo.... how am I supposed to obtain auditions?
