If you are tired of buying special BMW tools for every project, this is the video for you. I replace the front crankshaft seal on my BMW N55 engine without using anything but common tools everyone has in their garage and my old seal. For this replacement, you will need a new seal (make sure it's the correct one for your year), sealant and a primer to make sure that sealant sticks well and no oil comes out in the future. Depending on whether your engine is in or out, it make be an easy or a little harder job, but nothing that can't be handled in a few hours at home.

Theres a guy on here I just finished watching how he replaces his seal is with a PVC pipe! That' just sits within the seal it's even on all sides level just tap it in making sure it's going in properly And to take the seal out with a similar design like a dent puller drilling a small hole in the old seal screw the tip into hole then it comes out with the dent puller action etc! great idea!

To do this in the car without the tools is near impossible. The tool kit is worth it’s weight in gold…if you’re attempting this at home just buy the tool.

Wow! Thank you for this video! Super easy! Im definitely gonna get the special, but im glad i know how to do this now. Mine is leaking bad & the blue devil rear main seal doesnt seem to help so i imagine its bad lol

Make sure you do oil priming procedure before you starts it. There is BMW bulletin for it.

I would have put the primer and sealant in the grooves before installing and a bit of Krytox RFE around to lubricate the seal faying surfaces.

Someone said install the serpentine belt guard, I suggest also installing the Crank Bolt Capture also

Do not do this. Just buy the tool. You’ll end up breaking the seal wasting time and money. Just buy the tool.

I think that primer is not designed to be used on that Silicon based sealant !

I have the n52 engine I changed the front crankshaft seal twice it's leaking it looks like from the crankshaft I can run it for an hour and still nothing no leaks and when I drive it down the road within a half hour oil over the front of the engine like it's fun from the front crankshaft seal is it my crankshaft itself is grown down some and it's bypassing and do they make a sleeve that goes over the crankshaft

Not as far I can tell. BMW's instructions don't mention any oil and actually instruct to remove oil and clean the block.

What size bolt is the harmonic balancer? Is it an E10?

That front engine seal is a bloody nightmare. This method did not work for me.

I’m not worried about your tools I’m worried about using the proper sealant I’ve seen silicone destroy a whole engine that sucked through the crank seal.

Wish I knew of those before I did the seal.. but I might put it on later one, it's not very hard to get to and shouldn't take more than an hour.

@@SimpleCarGuy you can do it like without taking the crank seal off but ye u do gotta take the harmonic balancer off, I just put one on that I got from eBay bud gonna return it n get a kies Motorsport one

Hey guys I’m in the middle of my n55 rebuild and I’m debating on if I should get my regular injectors or buy this port injection kit that’s a little cheaper has anybody used this type or a similar let me know your experience

I wouldn't recommend port injection kit. You would almost certainly lose power and efficiency

hey quick question i loose the main crank shaft bolt by mistake, what do i do? do i just tighten it back?

Here is what BMW says about it: “If the central bolt is released, the sprockets of the timing chain and the oil pump will no longer be non-positively connected to the crankshaft. Intake and exhaust camshafts can turn in relation to crankshaft.” You’re gonna have to re-time the engine to be sure nothing got out of place. If you had the engine locked in place, you be able to get away with just replacing it, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s a risk.
