Front mechs still rule in some applications. I love the fact that you can dramatically change your gearing by the push of a button. Thus you can react quicker on sudden trail changes compared to 1x drivetrains where you often have to shift under extreme load in bad situations. I have found this to be very handy in alpine terrain and would not miss it for a day. You also have the advantage of finer and wider gearing, a better chainline and when setup properly they shift very reliable from my experience.

From my experience they shift reliably only for first 15 mins of muddy ride through the forest, after that there was enough grime under limiter screws to rub on chain after change.

@@Jarymutthat depends on the "pulling" or tension sistem . some have cables triggered by pulling up , some down . i don t have this issue with the one triggering up.

errrmmmmmm....... in 1992, I was running 580mm bars and there were people on less! that included space for bar ends to clamp on. of course a 140mm stem was also needed just so you were really really uncomfortable.

Oh, Rich. My first mountain bikes had 540mm bars. So 650mm bars aren'teven close to been narrow.

I’d bring back front derailleurs over rim brakes. I still have an older bike with XTR 3x9 and disc brakes. It works great for what I do.

#quiz - the original Psylo came with 'All-Travel' or 'Vari-Travel' - essentially the ability to swap from 5" to 4" of squish- either by plastic spacer on the fancy models or screwdriver on the cheaper ones. - and I think that was before it was branded 'U-Turn'.

What's with the criticism of stantion covers? I had a set of RST forks in the late 90s with them and they kept everything inside nice and clean. I think the problem was people pointing a hose at the vent holes... but I never had an issue with them.

Rim brakes actually work pretty good, if setup correctly. In the dry, that is.

#quiz the original Psylo had U-turn, a feature for travel adjustment on-the-fly with a knob on the top of the fork. One special feature was that it changed the fork length accordingly, and it allowed 100-125mm of travel. If I remember correctly, they came out first as coil versions with U-turn only, and the dual-air had no U-turn. Later Rock Shox created the Air U-turn, on different ranges of travel adjustment for the Psylo, Duke, Revelation, Reba and Recon. The Air U-turn was incredible since the travel adjustment still changed the fork height, but this did not affect the air pressure, and could be done with your weight on while riding. I have a Revelation with Air U-turn and Motion Control and I absolutely love it…

I've just pulled my Orange Gringo out of the shed for riding to work. Elastomer forks with concertina stanchion covers and V brakes and I've fitted 1.50 road tyres. Removed the front mech years ago though.

Skinny tires, rigid frames, front mechs, narrow bars, and long stems describes a gravel bike. This is why we ride modern mountain bikes.

All of my bikes that are not single speed still have a triple chainring on them. I think I still have two bikes that have cantilever brakes.

In fairness, a set of XTR V brakes on Mavic ceramic rims were wickedly strong!

#quiz - You already mentioned that the travel could be adjusted from 4 to 5 inches (but notes on that below) on the fly with the U-Turn feature. Two things you didn't mentioned about it - the U-Trun knob was made of (or maybe just covered by) a material called "Santoprene", in order not to slip when you dial it. Also, the stancions had been "marked" with the travel readings, so you can easily check at what you are. But I'm not sure if we are talking about the original Psylo (2001) though. I think the U-Turn was introduced on a later model. And the original had only the All-Travel and Vari-Travel features. The later model also had travel from 80 to 125mm (the original was indeed from 4 to 5 inches).

I'd rather have the skinny tires, full rigid, front mech, and those stantion boots. Which.. weirdly.. is what my DD bike has... well, except the stantion covers... those don't make sense on a full rigid bike....

Surely you could put spacers in the 95 mil version to take it to 70, or is the 95 actually a 120 with five spacers already in it?

Great show as always. For me it's rim brakes , narrow tyres and elastomer forks. The rst mozo pros I have on the the front of my marin are fantastic,way better than some modern forks, granted but the expensive ones but definitely better than SR suntour xc or xm range

Owen, the Domain fdork still has a 38mm stantion. I don't think I'll be changing the RS Domain fork on my hardtail. As I only ordered the forks 2 days before buying Pinkeye.

Anna, I have ridden full rigid mountain bike with toe clips and rim brakes with a front mech and a stem. Which I sure to this day. Should have been used to steer a narrowboat.

#quiz... 1st one had me split as they're both options that I'm still running with stumpy bar ends and 1.7/1.9 " 55/60 psi inflated tyres 2nd front derailleurs, would appreciate it if ceramic rims were still available?.... 3rd and elastomer for the win 4th defo clips n straps 5th 130mm 0deg rise stems for the win!

i just saw gavel is bad lol , why i had to build my own bike , the labels are bad , there all just bikes , i live on a mountain , started out in single track , love road too , got hit by a car broken spine , let just say i love the woods more now lol , 700c drop bars with 100m travel fork and 60mm rear and 2in tires on trail days . i cant buy this , i like a riser drop bars. the redshift kitchen sink ,we need better bike choices not labels and separation

#AskGMBNTech - Hi gang, what's your opinion on chain line. I currently ride a Rose Root Miller 2 which I bodged (extra spacer on the non drive side) a pair of Shimano Saint cranks on to (50.4mm chain line). It came with a pair of SLX cranks which the builders bodged by switching the spacer to the non drive side (it should be on the drive side). I have since decided to swap my saint cranks and install them on my hard tail. Should I get the SLX boost crank set 55mm chain line or go for the 52 with the spacer on the wrong side? Surely the spacer on the wrong side will offset your pedals asymmetrically or is the couple of mm negligable? And how bad is a 55mm chain line vs a 52mm.

@@johndef5075 have ceramic coated rims with v-brakes, defiantly better than discs.. My disc brakes are set up like I do on my motorcycles, ie they bite very good but they will fade as they get over heated because the rotors are too thin. The warmer the rim brake system get the better they bite. every rider that test my disc brake bike they are in awe, but when they test the rim brake bike they dropp the jaw completely. U can even get better brakes if u use the hydraulic rim brakes on those ceramic coated rims but then u loose the modulation.

#ASKGMBNTECH hi guys! I just bought a second wheelset for my bike and put a different set of tyres on it so i can switch depending on the type of riding im going to do. To make the switch easier i also put e new cassette on the new wheelset, and because the first cassette already has a fair amount of kilometers on it, i also got a new chain to go with the new casstte and wheels. On the wheelset i don't use i wrap the chain up around the cassette. Is this a good way to store a chain that is not used at the moment, or are there better options?

#ASKGMBNTECH I am currently riding a Commencal 29 hardtail whit a 150mm Rockshox and I am looking to upgrade to a fully. I al living in the Netherlands which is as flat as a pancake and I should have enough suspention whit 100/80mm but i like to have 150/140(Santa cruz hightower) or 130/120(Commencal tempo) so I can do a bikepark as well. But how does a fully compare to a hardtail? Is a 150mm HT almost the same as a 130-110 fully or more like a 140-120? Thanx in advance and apology’s for my bad English

Narrow back in the day of early 1990s is 22” or 560mm on Hyperlites or shorter if you cut them down. That’s true narrow! Those guys are too young to know that! Get outta here with them.

Hear me out: having a front mech doesn't necesarily involve having multiple chainrings, i'd just run a singular modern wide-narrow chainring and use the front mech as a guide

A front mech is a rubbish chain guide... the narrow-wide chainring is what would be keeping your chain on.

I think if the chain is going to jump a NW chainring, then a traditional front mech cage is going to be no benefit (as Anna mentions in the video, chains would end up around the bottom bracket on multi-ring systems with a front mech) - your best bet would be a modern style ISCG mount guide (with a Bottom Bracket mounted adaptor on an older frame), or perhaps an MRP style roller chain guide if you want to go old school?

@@jmo2752 i mean, i already roll old school on my 2009 Demo 8 anyways, i still don't have a wide-narrow chainring since the old one works just fine and i have a chain guide and pulley. Once the chainring is worn i'll get a bashguard and get rid of the chain pulley, probably i'll swap the 36 for a 38 too. The newest part i have is my rear shock, a kashima DHX2 Factory Series, huge upgrade over the old DHX5.0

@@Ferrari255GTO I feel this, I ran an old shwinn road bike I graveled out. Old enough to not have indexing and stem shifters. The front mech never shifted right, so I pulled the cable off an set it in the front gear I wanted. Much as you described it was essentially a front chain guide. Idk about modern or narrow wide, But on older mechs this is DEFINITELY an option for swapping to 1x

Insane that you guys think rim brakes have left yes they may not be what everyone wants but let's all be real disc are overkill and a pain in the ass . Cable rim brakes will forever be the standard

Dude rim brakes are trash. Cables are such a pain in the ass and you will never get the control or power you will with hydraulic disc brakes. It's so easy to bleed a set of shimanos if it's needed and honestly usually it's set it up and forget about it until you need pads or maybe a lever bleed.

We still do that, but usually this is during our maintenance videos on Saturday or our feature videos on Sunday. Wednesdays are for the Tech Show, which is our opportunity to share brand new technology that has just been released to the world. We are not paid to share this info, and we are not saying you need it, but we think it's relevant to viewers who want to stay up to date with mtb tech. 👍
