How To Connect Front Panel Connectors On Motherboard Tutorial for beginners step by step. This is the best tutorial on how to connect front panel connectors to the motherboard when building a PC. There are four main connectors to connect from the front panel to the motherboard, these are the Power Switch (PWR SW), the RESET SWITCH (RST SW), POWER LED (PWR LED), and HDD LED (Hard Disk Drive LED).
There can be variations on the naming of the cables, like MSG (Message/Power/Sleep LED), and the location of the front panel connectors will vary from one motherboard to another. Its usually next to the Speaker or Buzzer connector, for the speaker cable, but not always. Some cables can come in 3 pins format, like the Reset Switch (RST SW) cable.
This tutorial shows 2 motherboards, one from Intel and one from AMD; the AMD MSI B450 Tomahawk, and an old Intel Gigabyte motherboard GA 945-PL-S3,

Those pins are a pain in the ass to put in when your gpu is installed....then if you bring your pc to a friends house there is always that chance some of them will pop off.

got same problem, but i"m pretty certain that i have plugged those wires into wrong place. i have them plugged to JFP2 since that has not worked i will try to switch. also first time the power button was glowing red. honestly this so confusing when my motherboard manual MSI mortar is not explaining it very well. excellent video thanks for uploading it i would be stuck if not for a video on this that is not years old.

pls help me, i have tried everything, i plugged everyting in the right spot on the motherboard while outside the case and it turned on, but when i put the motherboard back in the case and plugged everything in it did not turn on, one time id did turn on while i had the power cable for the motherboard plugged in and the power for cpu plugged in while the motherboard was inside the case but when i plugged in the rest of the cables like usb, audio and other and felt like i was done the power did not turn on... (ive installed all the risers)

This just saved me so much money. I worked on my first PC build today for 6 hours straight and was so proud until I pressed the power button and nothing happened. Good video. I had a friend help me make a pc a few years back and while I was there when he did it, I forgot about the front panel connectors. Fast forward to a few months ago, I tried installing a better cpu fan and had to mount the brackets to the back of the motherboard myself. Removed the pins to take out the motherboard and didn't find out things were wrong until I noticed my case lights flickering like crazy. Finally solved it by switching the powerled + and - pins around.

Q - Which of the front panel connectors wire are necessary to at least turn your computer on? A - The answer is none of them are required. After installing the CPU, and RAM and connecting the PSU cables, you need only short the two Power Switch pins on the front panel block to start the PC. This can be done carefully with a medium blade screwdriver, just touch both of the Power Switch pins with the screwdriver, As for the situation with the 3-pin Power LED connector.... Case specification several years ago. One of the changes was going from a 3-pin to a 2-pin connector for the front panel Power LED. This is why many cases today have a split connector for the + and - Power LED like you show in your video to accommodate older motherboards with either the 2 or 3-pin connector. In the case of your MSI board, it has both 2 and 3 pin connectors for the power led to accommodate just about any computer cas you might be trying to use. On your MSI board, the 3-pin connector is labeled PWR_LED. The 2-pin connector is the one labeled [+MSG-] your motherboard's front panel header. They are labeling it a MSG connector because in addition to providing a steady power-on light. it will also cause the LED to blink in sleep mode and provide other 'messages', using a pattern of blinks to show stuff like P.O.S.T. status or errors. just built my PC yesterday. Everything started up and has been running great EXCEPT for the fact I can’t power it down or put it to sleep. If I shut down it turns back immediately, if I put it to sleep, it comes back on. Only way to turn it off is to flip the power supply switch on the back. Any help? My case didn’t have a reset PW. But the rest is all plugged in. Ryzen 5 3600. B450 tomahawk Max. Gtx 1660 super. NZXT h510 case. Power button lights up on the front. But doesn’t do anything when pressed. HELP!!

Got exactly the same problems, It seems my old PC's front panel cable only has 4 pins to connect, I'm either missing half or can't find them anywhere in my system.

@@wlos4029 some old pcs use proprietary connecters so only certain cases work with certain motherboards, but if you could find the pinouts or use an adapter you could get around it.

For the LED connectors yes you have to put them in the right way. For the switches, doesn't matter.

The power LED and HDD LED connectors can only go one way. If you put it in incorrectly the LEDs won't light up. For power switch and reset switch, doesn't matter. They only short the two relevant pins.

@@yaheardprince you're in no danger of frying anything unless you force a plug or use a header clearly not correct Exception for some mobos pump header used for a fan... If it's a higher wattage, it could be trouble. Double check the motherboard labels closely on these. They're clearly marked.

I have an older front panel, with a not as old GF8100 M2+ TE board. There are 4 pins pin places (11 is blank), but 12+ 13+ 14- I only have one + and one -. Do I use the closest + to the - (use the + in pos 13) ? Or leave a gap (using the + in pos 12) ? I cant find any help on this issue. Thanks in advance.

It's always a good idea to look at your motherboards manual to see where everything goes. They have a diagram in there showing all from panel connection pins and the board is labeled itself sometimes. Don't just go plugging in the cables just anywhere they fit.

Thanks for the video however I'm still running into issues. I'm using an older dell motherboard, not sure which one, trying to transfer to a powerspec g90 case, however, the dell power switch had a 5 pin connector while the new case has separate cables as shown in your video. How do you know the orientation of the Reset SW cable? All the other cables have negative or minuses on them , this cable you can put in anyway and it fits? Theres also little arrow near the pin insertions but nothing mentioned of that in the manual. I would really appreciate a quick response as i am this second building it. Kind regards. My cool master mb530p only gave me a power sw...I don't need the HD one since I don't have any of those. I had to put the power sw on the bottom part because it seemed to be the spot it indicated on my master jump connector that you can use to practice with. But I could not power the motherboard. I am assuming it is either the motherboard or a bad box switch?

Hey man was wondering if you have any tips on someone who’s dealing with a case with a full 12 pin front panel connector holding all power led hdd connectors in one plug! There’s no 12 pin on my mobo labeled jfp or fpanel, and the jfp only has 9 pins not 12

my motherboard is a lenovo M73e sff and it has a F_Panel pin connector. do i do the same thing as in the video or do i just plug it into the F_Panel spot?

Hello and thank you so much for your helpful video. I have use the manual for my motherboard MSI H61M-P31/W8. I have successfully connected the FP1 plugs. But I have a problem. All fans spin but only the front top fan lights up. The two below that I have daisy chained andthe rear fan I have added on too won't light. Can you shed any light. I have obviously not got it right somewhere. Thanks in advance :) Matt.

Dude thank you so much I tried for an hour to figure it out because I was installing new rgb cables for my fans and i couldn’t get to where I needed to do I unplugged the front panel cables not knowing that I forgot how they were and this worked after hours of searching videos thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hi there my friend, I seem to be having trouble with a ground loop and interference which I believe is xoming from a problem I have with the USB ports on the case. I wanted to know if you have any idea why? I have checked everything is in the right place, updated, deleted reinstalled drivers and the problem still persists, infact when I use the USB 3.0 on the face plate my computer starts to malfunction, connects/disconnects and freezes. Any help would be appreciated Thanks Harry

Thank you! I had no idea the front panel connectors had to be plugged in in a certain sequence and there was nothing in my mobo's manual about this. You saved my first build!

You can plug them in in any order.

Why do some motherboards have two places to hook up the power LED? One that is in the cluster with the reset switch power switch and so on then one off by itself. Can the power LED be plugged into either sets and still function?
