Respectfully... no matter the drivetrain layout you still need the car to rotate to get around corners as fast as possible. Obviously FWD can’t power slide but if you don’t get the nose pointed you’re going to have a bad time. I think the trick to understanding FWD is in learning how to use the front wheels to pull the nose of the car in the direction you want to go and making the rear of the car to slide as much as you need it to.

No mention of left foot braking? It's a critical technique to stop you going wide in long corners.

I recently switched to a logitech wheel after years of using a controller. After one month of trying my best, I could not for the life of me figure out FWD. I could even manage the Lancia Stratos after half an hour messing around in DiRTfish. Thanks to this video, I learned that my problem with FWD is that I'm trying to drive it like it's not a FWD.

Thanks for the great video! Does this mean you should open the differential for braking, and maybe lower the preload, so the car will turn better when off throttle?

You can slide with a FWD if you use trottle and brake at the same time. (left foot braking)

thanks, i was actually getting tired trying to figure out how to drive my starter cars properly, especially the 4 gear rally starter >.< its so hard to estimate your speed for corners with 4 gears and the corners being called out in 6 degrees of sharpness

I really like your vids, good stuff. I got two questions about FWD driving : Is heel toe nessesary wtih FWD and is it nessesary to press the clutch while using the handbreak like with RWD and AWD ?

Don't necessarily agree with all the points but a lot of good stuff. In tight to medium corners drifts to rotate the car early cam be really advantageous, also probably should have mentioned left foot braking.

I got this idea from initial d but...it works... with abs on, hold the gas in and break at the same time. Edit: ABS TO 5. I think it’s under assists.

You can still throw them into small slides on loose surfaces but you have to be very careful with the angle and throttle on exit.

But actually... I use the handbrake often in the fwd cars. All of my fwd cars have their differential locked and on hairpin, I rapidly tap the handbrake, downshift to first gear and power through the corner. Rapidly taping the handbrake with locked diff with the first fiesta R2 will make it slide as if it was a AWD car (but with a little less speed)

In dirt rally 2.0 I drive a FwD care almost perfect but I can't drive a AWD on the game I always spin out of control. Funny thing is I drive my real life subaru very well but I never driven it on gravel or dirt.

I play on a joystick and easiest for me is rwd but fwd is just a pain to drive and if the car is slow even harder

This tutorial seems really odd and filled with a lot of half truths. Yes, FWD can't drift like a RWD car can, but you can still slide them easily, even on grippy surfaces, by shifting the weight towards the front at turn in (lift the throttle or tap the brakes), the loss of grip on the rear tires causes them to slide a little giving you a lot of rotation (the same way you would rotate an AWD). On the other hand, FWD is easily the second best drive train to rally in, behind AWD, no questions asked. If you try to go on max attack on a RWD and the stage is anything other than dry tarmac, you are always gonna be on half throttle or just trying to manage oversteer to not smash into a tree. Other than that, the race line bit is true for all cars, unless the surface has uneven grip or there are obstacles in the course, the racing line is the fastest line. You seem to be mistaking the concept of racing line with what would be a traditional "grip" driving style of braking on a straight line, coasting through the corner and accelerating when the car is out of the corner. However, you can slide the car and still be on the racing line, that basic traditional style is really more of a circuit tarmac simplification to teach newbies, and even then, trail braking to maximize slip angle and attacking the throttle as soon as possible are still the fastest way around.

You are of course talking about racing in a simulated environment, not referring to real life racing in a front wheel drive vehicle. Because - if you intend your "analysis" to be based in the real world, spending 7 minutes on front wheel drive technique without mentioning left foot breaking, would leave you an emperor without clothing.
