Frontier Town was a popular Western theme park in upstate New York that fell into abandon in 1998 after attempts to revive the popular park of the 60's and 70's failed. Frontier Town was the lifeblood of North Hudson, N.Y.'s economy. Now, like much of the town, it's empty, with only fond memories remaining.
Frontier Town, a Wild West theme park, once attracted families from all across the country. It was very popular in the 1960's and early 70's when the Western genre was at it's peak, with shows like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, High Chaparral and others ruling the air waves. During it's best years, more than 3,000 cars may have filled the parking lot on a weekend.
Visitors filled up the town's motel rooms. When the day ended, the popular theme park tourists dined at one of several restaurants in town.
People from all over the USA have fond memories of visiting the park during their childhood, watching actors re-enact cowboy shootouts or bank robberies. Families rode in stagecoaches, and trains shuttled visitors throughout the park.
Some of the top attractions were the horse races, gunfights and performances held in a rodeo arena, where the grandstands still remain today, decaying into the surroundings.
Buildings have long since collapsed due to nature taking it's toll and moss covers the Western style chapel and adjacent buildings.
If you visit Frontier Town today, you won't hear the sound of happy kids, stagecoaches or staged "gunfights". All you will hear are the sad and haunting sounds of birds and the wind blowing through the trees. Like the fabled ghost towns of the wild west, this is all that remains and someday will be gone forever.
