Frontier Town was a popular Western theme park in upstate New York that fell into abandon in 1998 after attempts to revive the popular park of the 60's and 70's failed. Frontier Town was the lifeblood of North Hudson, N.Y.'s economy. Now, like much of the town, it's empty, with only fond memories remaining.
Frontier Town, a Wild West theme park, once attracted families from all across the country. It was very popular in the 1960's and early 70's when the Western genre was at it's peak, with shows like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, High Chaparral and others ruling the air waves. During it's best years, more than 3,000 cars may have filled the parking lot on a weekend.
Visitors filled up the town's motel rooms. When the day ended, the popular theme park tourists dined at one of several restaurants in town.
People from all over the USA have fond memories of visiting the park during their childhood, watching actors re-enact cowboy shootouts or bank robberies. Families rode in stagecoaches, and trains shuttled visitors throughout the park.
Some of the top attractions were the horse races, gunfights and performances held in a rodeo arena, where the grandstands still remain today, decaying into the surroundings.
Buildings have long since collapsed due to nature taking it's toll and moss covers the Western style chapel and adjacent buildings.
If you visit Frontier Town today, you won't hear the sound of happy kids, stagecoaches or staged "gunfights". All you will hear are the sad and haunting sounds of birds and the wind blowing through the trees. Like the fabled ghost towns of the wild west, this is all that remains and someday will be gone forever.

Great nostalgic video. Was there in the 60's, school field trip. I still have a teepee canoe souvenir.

WOW! Went here when I was around 8 years old. Have pics of my Uncle, sister, and I on the back of a horse and wagon statue. I don't remember it being that fun, but we didn't have Disney World up North.

I went here on my return trip from my Uncle's place near Saranac Lake in 1966. I got a kick out of all the role playing reinactors. It was quite the attraction back then.

My parents took us there in the mid 70's. Not sure if it was quite as fun as when it first opened. I liked Story Town better.

I worked there as a trick rider in the 90’s I also played the “wounded lady” and for fun rode in some raids and the Calvary was fun! You shown where’ we lived .. you said welcome to the condo!!!! It was a little cabin within the park! Also the place with the fancy curtain hanging up in it was where they took old time pictures . Hence a changing room and the dark room.. One summer we lived in the big brown house across from the old turn styles.. ( they had never used that entrance when I was there). Another simmer we stayed up at the old hotel ... not the nice one either!🤣 thank you for taking me back through memory lane!

I was there a number of years back for the auction. Everything from the train and railroad tracks to the fence that surrounded the parking lot was for sale. I bought the largest of 4 steers horns that were featured above the bar in the saloon. Now they proudly hang above my bar. There's a word for love of places like this- "kenopsia".

I took my son there to frontier town. it seem like it was a week ago or so. I remember it was a hot day. my son was 7 at the time. I can recall us riding the stagecoach going throught the trail and had a robber approach. it was sooo much fun there and they had excellent actors doing the shows. it was like living the real life back then seem sooo real. just wish they could bring all that back soo the kids can now enjoy the life of cowboys and Indians the rodeo they had there was excellent also. it was just great. now I watch the frontier town shows on my computer but being there was much much better..we miss Frontier Town very much

Just to let everyone know that Frontier Town (or what formerly remained of it) no longer exists and is now been totally remade over as a campground/recreational area. So if you plan to visit now in hopes of seeing what is in the video, it looks totally different.

REASON FOR CLOSURE: NY STATE made the property taxes so high, the owners went into default.. *Basic economics lesson to be learned via the NY State Legislature --> You can't tax everything exponentially without destroying the very revenues the state needs to operate.

So very true...and so very sad!!! It was a fun place to visit and right across the street is a nice campground too.. My parents owned a place down Blue Ridge Rd...and since they went under we always wished something would take it's place, though there never would be another Frontier Town!!!

facebook.com/FrontierTownThenAndNow has more articles and history on the theme park that attracted over one million visitors. It also inspired the Frontierland at Disney in the 1950s. I added a Frontier Town Playlist including digitized 16mm films and a western pilot shot at Frontier town. Search Frontier Town playlists. It has more than 70 related videos.

can ANYONE tell me ALL or at least SOME, hopefully sufficient information to find, that...childs initiation into the army theyd hold here b4 frontier town closed, and then they obviously kept that act together and indeed took it on the road, as shown on "Americas funniest home videos", where they would tell, indeed little 6 yo boys "and you're not going to see your parents again for a long time", whole bunch of little, I dare state VARIOUS ages, children gathered together to "join" the army, with this guy in the frontier version of American general costume, DOING the initiation. anyone remember this/maybe experienced it somewhat recently ? I'm looking for where they took this program after frontier town closed down, where they're doing this now ? any information would be appreciated
