The harrowing, vivid story of four Iraqi soldiers’ fight against ISIS. (Aired 2017)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
In “Mosul,” FRONTLINE presented an extraordinary look at the brutal battle to drive ISIS out of Iraq’s second-largest city, which some military commanders described at the time as the deadliest urban combat since World War II.
The people of Mosul had endured the repressive rule of ISIS for more than two years. This is the story of the men who fought back - and defeated the self-proclaimed Islamic State in their stronghold. Filmed on the ground by director Olivier Sarbil over the course of the nine-month battle, “Mosul” offers a stunning look at the high cost of the Iraqi Army’s liberation of Mosul from ISIS in July 2017.

I was following every day as well. I remember one time the main Iraqi reporter who goes to the Frontlines for "Al-Iraqia" TV channel got injured by an IED. He resumed covering the war as soon he he healed. It's important to remember that it's really not only the soliders who took a firm stand against isis. All of Iraq and the international community united against them.

Just raw, unadulterated bravery by these Iraqi Special Forces soldiers. I hope they survived and learning to deal with the post traumatic stress of combat. Luckily, Iraq is a very family oriented country and it gets you through it, esp when you are fighting for a cause.

🇮🇶The Golden Division lost half of its fighters, both martyred and wounded, but they were very brave. This pure nature is divine from God Almighty, and it is the courage and zeal of the Iraqi individual. Now the door to apply for Iraqi Special Forces students has been opened again. Long live Iraq.

Many adults in Iraq suffer some sort of ptsd. This is due to the countries constant state of war. My family members, relatives and friends who fought isis were not same after the war ended. Most of them are still serving. As for me, thier are signs of ptsd or something. After the war, I'm no longer interested in sports, politics or socializing. It turned me into in intorvert.

@@fogshadow9112 I'm sorry to hear that my dear, there must be people who you can reach out to who suffer from the same sort of PTSD. What people don't understand is that our brains are like a sponge it'll absorb all that we see hear and smell, people who lived through decades of conflict are usually withdrawn they have that empty stare in their eyes as if no emotion exists as if they are part of the walking dead "so to speak" People also don't understand that you don't have to be in the military and have seen combat to suffer from PTSD anyone who is put in a place that is common for us to understand our brain absorbs these terrifying images, the sights, the sounds even the smell of death burns a hole in our noses, every time we close our eyes the images of horror plays over and over as if we are in a constant nightmare that never ends because our minds have been exposed to the most horrific images unimaginable. I pray that God almighty will comfort you in your time of despair that you will know peace again and that he will send a helper to you so you may enjoy your life and not to live in fear or dismay. Please seek help for yourself that you may be at peace. May God bless you and keep you all the days of your life.

For your fallen soldiers, there is a peom we say in memory, i hope it carries its meaning in translation to your language "They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted: They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. While these brave guys are risking their lives to fight against brutal terrorists, I'm laying on my bed complaining about classes and assignments. I'll never be as brave as them or the journalist who filmed this, but I feel more grateful about the life I have now. I knew there are people living in a warzone like this, but actually watching the woman shaken by fear felt different than just "knowing" the existence of these conflicts. I can't imagine living in this place.

What happened in Iraq from 2003 until now is because of the American government. They were the ones who brought extremist gangs into Iraq. We used to live in peace, security and stability. They accused us of having weapons of mass destruction and killed a million Iraqis Among them are 5,000 scientists and the best doctors in the world, including the fourth strongest army in the world and one of the ten best passports in the world. We have the best teaching and our civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. We regret what happened to us

@@rusi6219 for the most part, the special forces were alright. You're talking about the Iraqi Army or Iraqi Police; they were worthless as hell. We trained tens of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans and every one of them were trash after billons were funneled to them. The only exception were those Iraqi/Afghan special mission units that worked side by side with our Tier 1-2 assets. Probably 5,000 between the lot of them across both countries. Every single US Military man and woman who served between 2003-2020 could tell any of our politicians what was going to happen when we left in any of those years. I remember saying we were going to lose in Afghanistan way back in 2008 and Iraq in 2006. Those soldiers were not soldiers, they were bodies collecting a paycheck midnighting as terrorists.

I was with the first US troops in Mosul after our Shock & Awe bombing campaign lifted. We were the first Americans the residents of Mosul had seen. They thought we had X-ray vision in our goggles and didn’t yet realize we bled too. The city was calm for the most part, until the Bush administration disbanded the Ba’ath Party and all hell broke loose, which still continues to this day. It breaks my heart. May God be with those in Mosul.

Truly impressive job capturing the realness of what is not seen by the majority. Mosul is and has been such a unique and challenging city landscape. The massiveness of this city makes it near impossible to control the movement in and out of persons, vehicles and equipment. The city also being split in two by the Tigris river having 5 primary bridges I remember very well. Watching this shown in this manner really took me back two decades ago with memories. Really appreciate the work that it takes to have this true representation of the environment.
