He was visiting his parents and his kid brother Dean who was only 15 was messing around with a riff.. In the early 90s, bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains came in like a tsunami and wiped everything away. Although these bands were defiantly influenced by heavy metal and classic Rock, I mean Nirvana definitely owes a debt to Boston’s more than a feeling and Pearl Jam 10 has much more in common with the classic rock than any other genre that was an influence on the member individually. It was a fresh sound by the mid 90s though, things were changing… and a second wave of bands came in to keep the flame of rock alive as Hip Hop and Teen Pop was taking over radio. One of these bands that made an immediate impact was Collective Soul. Their first two albums sold 3 million copies EACH not to mention their first 4 albums were all platinum and they had 7 number one hits on the rock charts and another 2 that went to #2.
With songs that defined the those times like December and The World I Know , as well as Run and Heavy. and of course their very first release SHINE. Shine is a bone a fide slice of 90s rock that went to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and crossed over to hit #4 on the Alternative charts as well as #1 on the mainstream rock chart and charted worldwide. It was the biggest rock song of 1994 and it all came from a chance writing session between Ed and his kid bother Dean. Ed decided to visit his parents… at this time a struggling musician. he heard his kid brother dean chipping away at a cool riff… Dean was then only 15 and likely unaware of how great the riff was… It’s one of those riff that sound so classic and full you feel like it was taken from another great song from the 60s or 70s but it’s all Collective soul. From there the two finished the song and it took 5 years before it want to #1. Lead singer and songwriter Ed Roland is one of the greatest guys in music. I’ve been able to interview him several times over the years and He’s a genuine guy who cares deeply about rock and roll not only in the music he creates but all of the history that came before. He’s one of the good guys for sure and what follows is the story behind creating Shine and Collective Soul’s Debut album Hints Allegation and things left unsaid.
