It should be noted that I have simplified some of the concepts to make it a bit more digestible :) realistically speaking when talking about Froude numbers, we should be talking about the number of transverse waves along the length of the ship's hull and also the subsequent interaction between bow and stern waves in terms of amplification and nullification but then it would just vastly go beyond the scope of what this video wanted to do. Which is to have some fun with WoWS while introducing some small bits of naval architecture. Let me know what you all think though :D I hope you enjoyed something a bit different.

well... wargaming was never reasonable to begin with. I mean look at the shell mechanics. how can a single millimeter of armor make such a huge difference. the caliber rule isn't even realistic to begin with. so of course speed and powerplant as well.

I'm pretty sure none of us ever expected ship's having a speed boost in WoWS to be a scientifically sound or accurate aspect of this game lol. Realism has never really been a big concern of this arcade game between Holland's WWII era torps that are somehow able to travel at 90 knots underwater, Kremlin's 457mm main battery turrets being able to rotate nearly twice as fast as Yamato's 460mm turrets, or something like Conqueror being able to completely repair almost all battle damage multiple times over per engagement. Also, various destroyer caliber guns being able to reach 11km+ when on a DD hull, yet those same turrets can only reach 5-6km when slapped onto the deck of a battleship in this game... With all this in mind though, I must say I was utterly shocked just now to hear that the engine boost consumable isn't actually physically possible...
@SteinbergerGPPRo
@SteinbergerGPPRo 3 жыл бұрын
Japanese Type 95 torpedoes can do 91 knots. The Halland is also a post war design, so it's not that ridiculous.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 3 жыл бұрын
@@SteinbergerGPPRo Yes... and no..... The maximum speed of the torpedos came at the cost of range, because like ships they have a limited internal fuel load, and like ships their range is affected by their speed, also like ships they have a maximum range dictated by their 'cruising' speed, i.e. the speed at which they are most efficiently running. Most warships of the WWII era for example were designed with a cruising speed of around 15 knots. Torpedo's could be set to run at a series of speeds, but go above that cruising speed and you begin to lose range. So while it MAY have been possible for a Type 95 to reach the speeds you claim, it is NOT going to retain the huge maximum range the type is famous for at that maximum speed. In fact that range is going to drop HARD once you start running the weapon at those kinds of speeds. You are likly going to get maybe a kilometre out of that kind of torpedo at 90 some Knots....
@Shadow-sq2yj
@Shadow-sq2yj 3 жыл бұрын
I never thought about the DD guns on BBs being twice as short ranged.
@IconProduction01
@IconProduction01 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shadow-sq2yj Yea, when I first started playing this game years ago and learning more about naval war ships and their construction etc., I started noticing how many times the naval designers from all the various nations tended to share guns and other bits and pieces between ships of different classes. One quick example was two of Mogami's triple 152mm turrets being reused after Mogami's main battery was upgraded to 203mms, so the IJN took the spare 152mms and mounted two of them as part of Yamato's secondary battery where they can be seen fore and aft just behind the main 460mm turrets. So, this sharing of the same naval gun between ships of different classes is especially apparent with the number of times various BB secondaries double as the main gun battery for a nation's destroyers. You'll see Haragumo turrets used many times in the secondary batteries of BBs like Yamato, Shikishima, etc. and I believe Gearing's main battery guns are the same as what's used in the secondary battery of many of the US BBs and the Midway too I believe. So yea, it struck me as pretty stupid and kind of frustrating that literally a copy paste of the same guns featured on a particular nation's DDs can suddenly only reach 5-6km max when mounted on a BB in this game... Obviously it kind of needed to be done for balancing purposes, but still, it's kind of stupid that literally the exact same gun will have drastically nerfed range and sometimes also different fire chances and reload rates just by them being on the side of a BB rather than used as the main battery on a DD hull..
@aleksei5172
@aleksei5172 3 жыл бұрын
Gun range for most ships in WoWS has nothing to do with the reality. For example, in-game main gun range of Warspite is about 16.3km. But in reality she holds a record of a successfull shot at 24km distance. Mikhail Kutuzov's main gun range is 30km, secondary range - 23km - mostly because it's post-WWII design

The only thing I'd like to add here is that the feasibility of exceeding efficient hull speeds is largely down to a matter of scale. The reason there were cruisers built that handily surpassed battleship powerplants in smaller size is that the boiler technology of the day simply allowed for it. Size and space mattered and there are of course diminishing returns in packaging just as well as in the exponential power required, allowing smaller vessels to more easily overcome these limitations for their roles. In your Georgia example, you list 1.41 and S/L of 1.39. Note that those values were identical to those of Mogami, a real ship that was actually built and operated. There is nothing physically impossible or even improbable about making such a thing even at the larger scale. The unrealistic aspect of it is that it's still an Iowa hull with seemingly little modification. It doesn't break through the barriers of reality, it breaks the budget and for no appreciable gain in a real naval doctrine that doesn't consist of a bunch of casuals zipping around the map randomly. Strategically, that much speed would have been useless. 33kts was already fast enough to A) keep up with fleet carriers and B) run down anything it would be called upon to engage. I'm not defending the choice (or admonishing it, from a gameplay perspective - I love Georgia!), nor criticizing this portrayal of the science (admittedly simplified to a reasonable level for a short video), but the context is still important to have a complete picture.

Nicely done Chase!. Puts my experience on the then Hr. Ms. Evertsen in a new light. The Dutch Navy tried to recruit technical people after they graduated. One of the things they did was a day out on one of the Dutch Frigates. At sea, the captain cranked her open en before we knew it, the stern seemed to dip below the sealevel. It felt like an oversized speedboat - awesome - at the time. Your explanation helped to understand what I experienced on that frigate that day. Thanks and keep it up! And it doesn't diminish the awe and power you felt as the ship went as fast as she could. :-D
@zhaviator
@zhaviator 3 жыл бұрын
On a side note, this is also why modern warships don't really go for speed anymore, since you can't dodge missiles with a few more kts anyway, instead of 33-35 kts you slow them down to 30, in some cases 27 kts saves a lot of space; weight and money on their propulsion
@imjashingyou3461
@imjashingyou3461 3 жыл бұрын
Its not about dodging missles so much as it used to be about closing in on an enemy or running away when they suddenly entered visual range. Since visual range isn't a thing anymore and missles have much longer range an extra 3 knots won't allow you to break or force engagement faster.

Now here's another question related to all of this: What sort of powerplants could actually generate the kind of energy required for those ships to do the things they do? Then you have to factor in power to weight ratios, fuel efficiency, and all sorts of other stuff. Long story short, boat building more complicated than just making stuff float in water

Here's a quick solution: add hydrofoil as an option, and make speed booster ships displacement/hydrofoil hybrids (which I think most hydrofoil boats are, kind of - behaving like displacement ships at lower speeds). I know, I know, the largest hydrofoil craft IRL were well under 1,000 t.... So the required power for s 50,000-tonner like GA would still be out of this world. And hydrofoil would expose its unprotected bits when in use. Would help against torpedoes though, big time )))) Oh, and an excellent video, btw.

I also appreciate the calculations. I had figured that if you had every steam powerplant on the island of Manhattan feeding steam through magical unreeling high pressure steam lines to the Georgia it might just about do it, but I think I kind of low-balled it. Here is an exercise for your budding naval architectural mind - could you do it with gas turbines powering generators and electrical motors for final drive? We have technology that has electrical super-cars putting thousands of horsepower down on the road with batteries and electrical motors. - just scale it up. Price is no object - paper is cheap, and so are paper ships. Gas turbines are very thirsty power plants, but remember that you only need fuel for twenty minutes of operation.

Well yeah, this strongly concludes that speed boost is a pure game mechanic like flags and captain skills, but the base stats are all quite reasonable. Though I have to note one very important thing: Froude numbers and Speed-Length ratios do NOT take hull shape and hull design features into account, which can massively improve a ships power efficiency if applied correctly. The most noticeable of those are bulbous bows and transom sterns.

I like the science and realism concept it's interesting , but this is an arcade game not a simulator, so all this is out the window. Having said that, are CVs in the game as they are a valid unit in realism or should they be removed due to being so broken or what is the fix, limited planes?
@Lukos0036
@Lukos0036 3 жыл бұрын
It's quite simple really. See if you channel a matter/anti-matter reaction through a subspace reactive material like dilithium, it magnifies the distorting effect it has on space time effectively becoming a tiny black hole for the duration of the reaction who's gravity well can be molded and manipulated to move it and the vessel carrying it at physics defying speeds by simply reshaping the fabric of reality. Easy! How they manage this without warp plasma nacelles is beyond me, but they did call them the greatest generation for a reason.

I checked my Georgia and confirmed my suspicion: she has planes, allowing her to be lifted out of the water at 35.6 knots and thereby achieving much higher speed at lower fuel consumption, and also requiring less power.

Bow shape , beam length and stern shape have a huge impact on how a ship preforms in water. You throw a rectangle in there with a concave bow with the same length as a ship you can get the same Froude Number but will need an exponent more power to hit the 20 knots. other things that need to be calculated for ship speed A* typical wave amplitude h* water depth g*=9.80665m/s2 acceleration due to gravity circular wave number S(x)=S*(x*)/(εh*2) submerged cross sectional area of ship at section x depth Froude number U* ship speed w* channel width horizontal coordinates ε=A*/h* smallness parameter for wave nonlinearity depth-averaged potential ζ=ζ*/(εh*) free surface elevation anyways do one on Reynolds Number

the fastest cruiser of ww2 was the italian Scipio Africano of the Capitani Romani class. It broke 40 knts. It is represented in our game as the DD Paolo Emilio, as it was a small cruiser class....Id be curious to run that calculation.....and also how about torpedo speed?

Great vid thank you Will you be doing any videos explaining why this game feels so "rigged" especially Naval Battles for clan resources, i can have great games one after another as long as i dont engage in naval battle but once that engage button is clicked....the match making worsens ie. Enter with T6 and every battle is T8 , unclick engagement and match making is crap but all a sudden T5 thru T6 in battle. I could go on example after example. Operations (enemy ships behave differently once there are 4 people in a division) together. So I and many others actually feel the game is saturated with systems designed against us completely?
