This video shows how to resolve a fairly common problem with the newer Penn Jigmaster fishing reels. It shows how to free up a frozen reel and how to restore it to go fishing.
I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please "like" it and subscribe to see more. Questions? Comments? I reply to all.

Dennis when you pulled that side plate off I had to literally laugh out loud. I haven't used any of my Saltwater reels since October of 99. I opened the bag up and took a peek at them in May I could see no corrosion. When I got home to Texas I started going through freshwater reels but I left my Saltwater bag in my storage...I now am anxious to get back to them and disassemble and hopefully be able to maintenance them without having to replace a lot of parts. Back in the 90s it was relatively inexpensive to have a shop take your stuff apart grease it up and just pick it up. I didn't know anything about maintaining them I always just paid somebody to do it of course I could afford to back then to. Now thanks to KZfaq and guys like you, I find some pleasure in doing it myself and I'm hoping that those reels aren't a mess. I know I I always rinsed them off and wiped them down. I never took anything apart though. I'm just hoping that I don't take them apart and find everything turned green inside of them, like that one you just pulled apart. I have a Penn senator 4/0 a 113H a Jigmaster and a couple of Diawa Sealines a 20 and a 50 that little SL20SH is a BEAST... maybe I should get back to your video :]

You should be fine if you cleaned them before they went into storage. Probably should replace the drag washers if you are going to go fishing with them. 20 years will dry those out and the HT100 or Carbontex are now available for those Penn reels, so take advantage of the newer technology - Dennis. PS - My brother lived right next to Goldenwest university. He has since moved a few blocks closer to the ocean and off the main roads.

@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis I just loved living in Huntington Beach. Don't know if I'll ever get to live out there again but my Youngest is living in Escondido and has invited me out. I think I'll get after the maintenance on those rigs here in a little bit. Do you have a link to those drag washers?

This is the exact problem I had with my Penn Monofil 26. I heated it lightly with a bic lighter and covered the gear with a piece of soft leather and worked it. I had a heck of a time figuring out the dog spring, though. Thanks for that other video, too!

This is no uncommon on the older Penn Reels.The spool gear and shaft are steel and they rust together. On the spring, there is a "trick", but do it once and you can do it forever, the process does not change - Glad to hear of your success - Dennis

This was very helpful. Thanks Dennis for sharing another great video. This is proof, preventative maintenance is the answer to keeping your equipment up and running. A possible solution would be, have an extra reel or two to rotate them into service while servicing the others. Thanks. Stan

I have a few different reels, just in case, but you are correct, keep them clean and maintained after use, and the preventative maintenance will go a long way between service - Thanks Stan - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
The clicker is likely rusted as these were made from steel and water corrodes them over time. Take the side plate off and try soaking the Internet portion of the click tongue with a Liquid Wrench type rust buster. Let it sit overnight to do its thing. Scrap off any loose rust beforehand Next, try moving the tongue back and forth with a pliers to see if it free up. If not, you may be able to replace this with a later assembly that is not pressed on. Call Mysticparts.com and see if one is available your your reel. If all else fails, you can either buy a replacement side plate or fish the reel without the click function - Dennis

2nd Chance Tackle Thanks for your reply. I've only seen one other which was in a tackle shop in Adelaide, was a different colour than my blue one. I always thought it was supposed to be the same gear ratio as the C4s (6.4 -1) Didn't feel like it though. Read the side of the box which confirmed my thoughts Actually only 4-1 Is it possible to change the gears to 6.4 or higher? Once more Thanks for your reply 👍

Dennis, I just baught a jigmaster from Ebay I want to replace the drag stack, should I lubricate the drag stack or place them in dry?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 жыл бұрын
Al - If you are replacing the drags with new Penn HT-100 washers, then use a light coat of reel grease and wipe off the excess. If you are installing Carbontex washers, leave them dry. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I am appalled at the lack of concern many fishermen have for their rods and reels. When they get a big fish to the boat--they literally throw the rod to the floor of the boat to deal with the fish. Then they grab by the far end of the rod and drag it along the bottom of the boat--raking the finish off the reel and gouging finish off the rod. They wonder why the reel quits working.

Well said and all to common. I repair rental rods and reels for charter boats and that is the Captain's number one complaint.

@@2ndChanceTackle I see this same issue with everyday fishermen too. Boa t on trailer--rods in bottom of boat slamming around as they go along the road. Or the rod in some kind of rod holding sleeve--bent double by fastening the loose end of the line to the handle--rods flapping in the breeze while bouncing off each other. Another issue I see is people using the rod/reel as a "winch"--drag screwed all the way down and using the rod to drag the fish to the boat---many times resulting in broken tackle. This same cavalier mentality is also seen in duck hunters who literally throw their shotgun into the boat or bed of a pickup. Some guy's guns look as though they were used as a sledge hammer.
