Everything is better with Bluetooth! Even FrSky R9M can be made better by connecting an HC-06 Bluetooth module to it and sending telemetry to an Android app. If TBS Crossfire can use Bluetooth, why R9M can't?
To make this work, you will need some "do it yourself" approach. SmartPort signal is inverted, so you will have to build an inverter with 10kOhm resistor and 2N7000 signal MOSFET. On top of that, you will have to buy and configure an HC-06 Bluetooth module.
It's fun, it's simple. A great thing for a weeked project. As a reward, you will be able to use Android "iNav SmartPort telemetry viewer and logger" app to see in a real time where you airplane or drone currently is! It works with INAV, Betaflight, Cleanflight and all other flight controllers with GPS and SmartPort telemetry! So should work with ArduPilot and Pixhawk too!

This will probably work with any FrSky telemetry capable Flight Controller - GPS telemetry is the same, they differ only in handling Tmp1/Tmp2 (sat count, fix). Great stuff! Thanks for sharing! :) EDIT: You wrote that in the description. :D But you missed dRonin, that will need a small change in the Apps code.

HM-10 Bluetooth BLE module is also supported. I had a cheap AT-09 from eBay, flashed the HM-10 firmware to convert it to normal HM-10 and then I added a simple signal inverter.

This app is awesome. All it needs now is RSSI in it and the possibility to define sensor warnings. Then I'll have completely useful telemetry on my old PPM radio using the 4in1 Multiprotocol-Module with HC-06 BT module :D

Pawel, I run iNav and Arducopter on pixhawk, shouldn't it also work with the ardupilot family and ez-gui or qgroundcontrol? BtW, I'm so glad you did this video, I've been thinking of this for a long time.

I bet once the plane flies out more than 500m, the normal telemetry lost comes and the android will receive nothing ..... So I need to have the frequent telemetry lost problem solved first..

We tried using GPS coordinates from but we only had degrees and minutes but no seconds the area was too big to find aircraft. Will this show seconds as well? Is there a setting in frsky to include seconds in coordinate? Also is there a system to use this blue tooth for ground antenna tracking?

Thanks so much. I've just found your videos here on KZfaq, and they are great! Very helpful especially to people like me, newbies! I've been trying to do what you describe in this video with putting a bluetooth module on my Taranis QX7. I'm trying to connect a tablet so I can feed the telemetry from me R9M module into the bluetooth and then onto the tablet for ground station monitoring. I'm able to connect my tablet to the bluetooth module with your inversion mods, but have never been able to get the telemetry data to feed into the tablet. I'm thinking it has something to do with the new ACCESS protocol, which my R9M 2019 has on it. Do you know anything about that? Thanks again for your great videos!

Hi Pavel, Do I need inverter if I use this modul with Radiomaster TX16S ? I managed to setting the bluetooth module with termite software. But my android somehow can not detect the bluetooth like there's no bluetooth signal emited from the module.

Just got it working, thanks for letting me know about this app. It's exactly what I've wanted for a while. edit: HC-05 does work. Also, i'm just using a sbus inverter as my signal inverter. I got mine from aliexpress. Next to try is using the spare serial port on the back of the taranis.

Taranis serial port works as well. I turned on s.port mirror, wired a 5v reg from the taranis to the inverter to the Bluetooth.

P.I.Engineer please help ME! I purchased a DSDTECH HC-06 Bluetooth module from amazon and using DSDtech’s config tool can’t get it to Change buadrate to 57200 whatever it is. I’m using a sbus inverter from R9M module to Bluetooth HC-06 and it connects to app but no data! Any help or video chat would be great

I modified a HC-06 as described and worked well. I thought I would use your FrySkySportDecoder for Arduino Nano to decode smartport GPS data from the Taranis to the aduino nano, for a DIY antenna tracker. However I don't read any data either on pin 12 or pin 3. I know it's an old programme, is it still working.

Hello, Saw the video seems really great ! will try for it. I am basically trying now to decode the S.Port, the reason being I would like to get the telemetry data either on the craft(since I have made a boat) and then upload it on the cloud ! so thought of getting the S.port data, convert it to UART and upload on cloud. Is there any other way of doing it? I use Taranis Qx7 with R9M... hope to hear from you soon!!

Hi Pawel. I'm not a guy who works with diodes mosfets etc, and the 10Kohm resister. I see a few 10K resisters, but without the same colour coding. Is there a link to guide me to the right one? Thanks

Does R9M 2019 need the inverter? ExpressLRS doesn't need it on R9M 2019, but maybe I'm mixing two different concepts.

Dear. I'm using RadioMaster TX16S, TBS Crossfire Micro TX and iNav. Is it possible to apply to my RadioMaster TX16S, TBS Crossfire Micro TX and iNav? There is UART that are direct output non-inverted TTL. So I think that it is possible to apply without inverted HC-06 bluetooth module. How about? thank you.

Horus X10S has onboard Bluetooth, and you can set it to 'Telemetry' as opposed to 'Trainer'. It seems like it should be possible to use this to output telemetry to a connected Bluetooth device, but I've never managed to get it to work.

Further to this, I've just left a comment for Crazydude on his Github. My feeling is that this has never worked for me because the signal outputted via Bluetooth is still the inverted Smartport signal, so to make this work would probably require the inversion to be done in software in the Android app itself, prior to decode and display. Let's hope CrazyDude will consider doing this for us :)

iMSB also uses a bluetooth module and connects it directly to the external RF module of the taranis. I do not have R9m. Could I use the bluetooth of @ TheCrazydude1994 connecting it in the same place?

Nice, curious what the log files from the App look like. I just started using the OpenTX SD Log and would like to get imported into Dashware for HD video overlay, but having issues with the CSV column formatting. Either way, cool setup!

Log is just raw output of the smartport telemetry. But it also logs just coordinates to CSV file.

Hi All, So was anyone able to make this work?? i tried 2 different HC-06 modules, configured them according to instruction. Both works fine -can connect from my phone and verify in blutooth terminal app that data can be sent and received. also i soldered scheme as suggested and if: 1 i solder resistor and plug this module into R9M --then Blutooth not startting - no led lihjt on it and no BT available on phone 2 if i unsolder resistor -- it starts and visible on phone - and can't connect in telementry app 3 if i plug it to r9m (bt starts) and then if i connect resitor - them it send telemetry data. so from my undestanding this BT module can't start if data is sent to it's RX pin.. how this can be avoided or fixed? tried different resistors , still no luck

Means its a one way telemetry, received data to mobile app but dont send commands from mobile for ex. Flight plan, flight mode from mobile GCS.

What is the range on this? Doesnt seem like you would get tracking data for long with BlueTooth or am I missing something?

It does not use bluetooth to communicate with the aircraft, its merely a relay to pass the flight data transported over your receiver's SmartPort telemetry downlink to your android device. The range is variable according to which telemetry receiver you have, in this case, an R9 one, which should yield several kilometers (5-10km).

I have a QX7s, if the onboard Bluetooth doesn't invert the signal, I have a small board "TBS inverter qx7", it needs 3.3v. And I have a 3.3v regulator ams1117, it can handle a input to 10v. So I just need the Bluetooth module. If I modify the onboard bluetooth I would not be able to use bt trainer I guess.

Hello Pawel. I was building the module when I had Taranis X9d+ R9m and R9mm and used it with Betaflight 4.0. Now I changed everything to the 2019 versions and it doesn't work anymore. Seems like the Bluetooth module doesn't receive data from the s.port of my R9m 2019. I did not find a solution so far. I think I was reading something about a changed serial speed with the new module. Can it be as simple as that?

Great idea .l use a 3dr telemetry wired on a f7 controller and for ground station a 3dr wired to an hc 06 on usb power bank. Connect to phone or tablet with mission planner for inav.telemetry mission bluetooth inav setttings with computer without wire

Cute, I'd like to bet it will work a lot better using a decent 2.4G Telemetry capable receiver. The R9M system is still very flaky IMO. Meantime, I will make do will my OSD overlay and iNAV...lol.

@@chriswhitehead6095 Bluetooth close to your 2.4 RC will definitely affect your transmission and may shorten your range. It's way worse on receiver side.

Ok so I built one of these today and was tearing my hair out because it wasn't working... turns out this does not work if you're using f.port between receiver and flight controller... only when using traditional s.port and SBUS.

Probably because f.port works at 115,200baud and not 57,600. Dunno whether just adjusting the BT module baudrate would do it? I'm not convinced anything comes out the rear R9M smartport pin when using f.port. Maybe someone else can test. I CBA.

@@leephcom James, I've been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work and just came across your post, I'm also using F.port my BT module is set to 115200 baud and still not working.
