Entire video is a single take and runs entirely in a Python command line on Windows 10. Animation designed and programmed by me.
Thank you Frums. Your music is truly a blessing.

oh, that's a thing called ansi escape codes. using the code "\033[y;xH", you can set the position of the cursor in the command line to line y and column x - which means i can overwrite specific blocks of text on screen as if they were pixels. my rendering engine uses this in a very optimised way to smoothly render each frame see this gist: gist.github.com/fnky/458719343aabd01cfb17a3a4f7296797

this is cool but in my head i was imagining a backstory where everything was normal until a catastrophe happened and someone was desperately trying to see which news channel was broadcasting and after years of searching they finnally found one, just a cool backstory i guess
@plaaosert
@plaaosert 2 жыл бұрын
I heavily imply a a catastrophe here but yeah that is an interesting idea for an alternative story. for this, it is essentially an autonomous terminal of some kind trying to connect to the service after some sort of calamity. the music itself is heavily open-ended so it's not surprising multiple interpretations exist

10/10 remix/extended ver. I am really really not saying that lightly in the slightest. Extended remixes are usually at least almost as good but usually worse, never better. This is better. Infinite kudos from this stranger fr

@@plaaosert would you mind going into a little detail on how you did this? I'm really interested in how you timed it so well, what you used for animating it or anything you want to talk about. Found the song on Osu, I'm a comp sci myself and love Frums so I've shared it with all my friends :D Thanks!
@plaaosert
@plaaosert 2 жыл бұрын
hey - yeah, sure! the repository is in the video description for one but i will explain briefly how i timed and animated it. - first off, i used a library called "just-playback", which supported viewing current audio time and seeking; two of the things i needed. my animation system requests a new frame based on the time delta from the last frame rendered, so at the point of requesting a frame the system stores the time it was requested then requests the next at exactly (delay; calculated by offset+bpm) ms later. this means that temporary lag and frame render time do not affect the playback sync of the animation. (also, this is used pretty much everywhere for when timing is important! never rely on sleeps! always make sure you're timing based on the system-accurate time) - as for the animation, that's a hand-made animation/rendering framework written by me called CLIRender. it's also inside the repository to take a look at and is reasonably well commented. the basic method is that we use ANSI escape codes to jump the cursor to specific points on the screen and set its colour accordingly. i do optimisations to reduce the number of ANSI codes used as they're (comparatively) expensive compared to regular text rendering, especially on windows. for example, to print an ansi code in python to set the cursor position to line 2 column 3, i would print "\u001b[2;3H", which is consumed by the terminal and repositions the cursor. colours are "\u001b[31;1m" for bright red, for example. there's a hack on windows which allows you to enable ANSI mode using "os.system("")" (yes, that's an empty string), which i still haven't worked out why it just... works. my resource for most ANSI things is either the wikipedia article or www.lihaoyi.com/post/BuildyourownCommandLinewithANSIescapecodes.html - both of which are very good. - i didn't use anything else to animate, it was all written by hand using the animator. since terminal rendering has a lot in common with old console canvas rendering, it made sense to have each frame not as a fully rendered scene but as a "delta" which only drew the updates. a parallel here would be P/B-frames in MP4, as opposed to I-frames. most of the animation was done using a "functional programming" style, in which Generator objects were stored with their own data and functions called each step. the project is reasonably complex so i can't explain everything. also, glad to see someone else doing compsci! i'm a year 2 university student for compsci as of right now and, just like you, i found frums from osu maybe 4 or so years ago (back when i actually played it, lol). i'd be glad to help show more about the animation framework; i intend to at some point release it as an entire package usable by others to make their own animations.
