Everything is perfect. The Chapelle royale, the orchestra, the conductor, the chorus and soloists and, yes, the pronunciation of Latin as it used to be in France until the 20th century! Té déom lodamüs!
@lauriethompson7403 жыл бұрын
Oh that's interesting about the pronunciation of Latin, I only recently appreciated that what I think of Latin is really Ecclesiastical Latin and that it differs significantly from Classical Latin. I wonder if the French pronunciation was also what we inherited in England from the Normans? Quite possibly I guess, given that English coronations where spoken in French for 300 years after 1066!
@filipschweiner19892 жыл бұрын
@@lauriethompson740 This is a french version of ecclesiastical Latin. The standard version is the Italian pronunciation, but many nations made some adaptations based on their language's phonetics. I don't know much about the spread to the English language, but the Ecclesiastical Latin currently used in anglophone countries follows modern English accents.

As an "spanish" speaker, I found extremely strange that pronunciation. Seems to be so, that "italian" and castilian have very near phonology ... Anyway, I've never heard before, about that "french prounciation" for classical latin. Kind regards from Montevideo. 🇺🇾
@ahoj77202 жыл бұрын
I must add that French pronunciation did not take stress into account (actually, Latin words used to be stressed the same way as French does: on the last syllable). Italian ecclesiastical pronunciation, on the other hand, stresses the words as Italian does, which is close to the original Latin (but ignores the original length of the vowels). This has consequences on the way the Latin words fit to the music. It would be interesting to listen to Romantic French music, from a time the French pronunciation was still used (e.g. Berlioz's Requiem). It could be quite surprising! By the way, "té déom" is how the title of such a piece is pronunced, regardless of the pronunciation that is used by the singers.

Aside from their unencumbered and naturally-endowed artistry, these wonderful and dear musicians show genuine happiness and joy in performance - it shows in their faces and in the depths of their eyes, the spiritual energy they emote which by nature is obviously inherent. They come to the stage already enjoined by expressive energy. They command Marc Antione's score in a manner which would make him happy. As I write this inconsequential personal note, I do not see their faces, yet I see the light emerging from the place of their performance. The test of any art - what light does it render, and from where? Plainly seen in the soul of every performer on this stage. Thank you.

Tremendously moving, wonderful performance of the Charpentier Te Deum: the setting is sublime, the composition itself is sublime, but there is something especially sublime about the collective effort, so much larger than the sum total of its individual parts, marvellous though each part is. I'm astonished and very moved by the sheer musical jubilation of the musicians--here music is transportation, evident in each individual musician's involvement. A wonderful thing to watch, to witness! Eight years have not reduced the magic of these eight minutes, a tribute to all who delivered this performance and a delight to the audience, both on the day and on all the days of its repetition and dissemination.
