In this animation, Dr. Eric Laywell, Associate Professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine, discusses how injury to the gluteus medius and minimus muscles can result in Trendelenberg Sign, a gait in which the patient leans toward the side of the injury. In the animation, Dr. Laywell explains the mechanics of joint movement and clarifies common misconceptions about the Trendelenberg Sign, and demonstrates clinical assessment of the gluteal muscles.
This animation was directed and produced by Jodi Slade, certified medical illustrator at the FSU College of Medicine.

It took me such a long time understanding why the problem was in the abductors and not the adductors to have a positive sign on the Trendelenburg's test. I completely understand it now, thank you a lot! It's a very clear explanation, good video!

Thank you. This explains the difficulty I’m having with my gait. I fell and broke my femur below the trochanter in November. The fall also resulted in changing my spinal stenosis from moderate to severe. The femur and spine have been surgically repaired. Now I’m working to rehab everything. This explains why my PT is pushing me to work on my gluteus medius recovery. Now I understand the issue better.

@@debbieb9628 - I go to Duke PT. I have been assigned a variety of HEP2GO exercises designed to both improve the flexibility of the hip flexors and to improve the strength of the glutes, abdominals, perispinals, and flexors. The newest addition to the routine is using the Activator Poles from Urban Poling. These aren’t just any trekking poles. They are designed to help with recovery. I can only due about 10 minutes every other day. (I can ride my recumbent trike 20+ miles in a couple of hours.). These really work my back and hips hard. They work, but go slow and increase the time very slowly.
