Florida Educators - Florida Teacher Certification Exam
There have been three changes to the requirements for teacher certification in the state of Florida, per the Florida Department of Education, as of July 2021.
Change One: Teachers with ANY completed master’s degree, regardless of the degree focus, exempts them from the requirement of passing the General Knowledge Test.
Change Two: Teacher cannot be exempt from having to pass the Professional Education Test of they are in an approved EPI Program AND received a "highly effective" evaluation from their school administrator.
Change Three: After July 1, 2024 teachers can NO LONGER use the Reading K-12 Subject Area Exam as a way to fast-track the Reading Endorsement process. All teachers would have to complete the full 300 hours of five modules to obtain their Reading Endorsement.

Thanks for the video. If the master's degree is more than 20 years old (but less than 25 years ago), is that okay for not having to take the GKT?

Dr. A This is wonderful news. I live in SC and I have a Master Degree from an accredited University. Today I did my evaluation but I am a TA and has been for a few yrs.

Dr. Ampel, After contacting my advisor at TeacherReady (an EPI), I was told: "Unfor tunately, the rule refers to those that are already working as full time teachers at a public school and were rated as "highly effective" by their school principal during their employment evaluation. The rule does not refer to student teaching evaluations..." Is this how you understand the certification changes as it relates to EPIs? It seems what my advisor is explaining relates to the PDCP, no?

There are teachers that are in EPI and in the classroom. Then that applies. If your student teaching, then no.

If you want your GKT waiver for Florida certification, then yes.

I jus spoke to the department of education and you do not need to have a temporary certification while you get your Masters to waive the GK exam. All you need is a Masters degree in any subject.

Does the fast track apply for the ESOL exam as well? Or is this just for the reading endorsement?

Hi! Good question. Yes and No. You can't bypass all the course hours, but only some. You have to ask your district what two courses you still need. The test can help you lower the amount of hours you need.

So just to clarify. I am currently not working for a district, but i did receive my alt cert in k-6. If i take the reading exam next year i can still bypass the 300 hour courses? I had a statement of eligibility years ago for social sciences but that expired in 2013 i think.

You can still take it before 2024 to satisfy the reading endorsement 300 hrs.

I had my transcripts reviewed by the DOE. I have a Masters in Aeronautical Science Safety with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. They are still requiring me in order to get my Physical Education temporary certificate to either take 30 credit hours or FTCE exam which I have taken and missed by 9 points I challenged it today. Who do I need to reach to get the PE FTCE waived?

Just to clarify, I’m IN an Alternative Certification Program now (in my last class) and I’ve been marked highly effective last year, could I get Professional Ed waived?

My school is NOT allowing students to continue through a program while trying to pass the gk, even though the new law states students should be able to continue.....help!!!!

Hi!! Since its a part of fast tracking a reading endorsement program, unfortunately no. Plus, the window to doing this ends July 2024. Traditionally, 300 hrs of Reading Courses is required.
