I’m so proud to be Slovenian! I live in Cleveland, Ohio, where there is a tight-knit Slovenian community and culture. All of my grandparents emigrated from there, and I grew up learning how to dance polka, attend “Slovenian school” and a Slovenian summer camp and cook Slovenian foods :) also visited there for my uncles traditional wedding and it was wonderful!

Jen Mishelin No :( unfortunately Slovenian school didn’t really teach us fluent Slovenian. It was more about the culture and history. I know how to read Slovenian (then again, it’s really not that hard because it’s phonetic lol) and quite a few words but definitely not enough to understand a conversation in Slovenian. I’d definitely love to take a more serious class when I’m not swimming in college work haha

First, we are not the "literal centre" by any measure. Second if you ask other countries we are EASTERN europe. Central europe is a made up concept by us and the Czech because we very desperately wanted to "escape" the fact that we are eastern europe. But we cant escape it. If you ask germans they wont tell you they are "central europe" but western europe and they will be correct. And the geographical center is in Germany. So stop being such bitches (hlapci) grow a pair and admit we are slavs, balkans and eastern europe.

Še v srednjem veku je bilo večinsko slovenska cela današnja avstrijska Koroška i cela vzhodna Avstrija. Avstrijci, ki niso narod so se pritepli iz Bavarske, kot trgovci. Naprimer ime Gradec avstrijski Gradz, so dali ime staro slovenci ki so poseljevali celi vzhodni del Avstrije, visoko do hribovja v osrednji Avstriji. To se v Sloveniji mslo govori in Slovenci tega ne vemo, ker imamo politike ki samo razdirjo med ljudmi.

Good video! As a Slovene I should add that we speak many languages, most of us speak English and every village has its own accent, really. A person from Primorska (next to Italy) and one from Prekmurje (next to Hungary) could not understand each other if they spoke in their respective dialects. And one more thing, we go to Brezje to bless our new car, besides other things 😉 Good job.

Right! And, Slovenians consider them self culturally as middle European To clarify my comment; of course Slovenians are slavic (language and a huge part of their culture), but they wouldn't see them selfs as east or south Europeans. A big part of Slovenian culture is more part of middle/central Europes culture, take a walk in Ljubljana and look at the architecture to see what I mean. Also the mindeset that Slovenia is part of middle Europe was emphasized after the independence of Slovenia to distance themselves from Belgrade. Orientationwise Slovenia wanted to be "more like western/central Europe" so to speak, neighbors like Italy or Austria became mor important in that period.

Quick Fix, You forgot to record that in our forests there are on average lives between 500 and 700 bears (currently around 500), between 50 and 73 wolves, and 20 lynx (14 new will bring this year). All this on such a small surface. In most European countries, don't live that much number of these beasts (animals), if they even have any of them at all. Slovenes live with nature! At least most.

Kot Italijan mi je zelo žal, kaj se je zgodilo v celotnem obdobju fašizma, zelo žalostno in zelo boleče, prelilo se je veliko nedolžne krvi. Nič več vojne med našimi narodi in med našimi narodi. As an Italian, I am very sorry for what happened during the whole period of fascism, very sad and very painful, a lot of innocent blood was shed. No more war between our peoples and between our nations. Da Italiano, mi spiace molto per quello che è successo durante tutto il periodo del fascismo, molto triste e molto doloroso, molto sangue innocente e stato versato. Mai più guerra tra i nostri popoli e tra le nostre nazioni.

@ultra_SANS The unbeatet I mean, it is hard, but it really depends on the person if it's hard for them or not, by it being their native language, the only hard part I'd say about it, is the mess about singular and plural. Also, if you wanna speak formal, you have to know how to form sentences perfectly. I use more of a "home" Type of talk, which annoys every teacher haha. But I really don't like Slovenia, I'm planning to move abroad as soon as I can, cause I don't wanna live here. Sure, the nature is really pretty but like, I'm definitely a city person (I grew up in one) so I wanna move to a bigger city. It's a pretty complex topic for a foreigner to try to explain….so let's just make it clear, we are definetly Slavic , but in terms of our character and culture it's safe to say that we have some Germanic traits, there is also some Italian influence especially in the West and Southwest of the country. We are sort of considered 'Germans of the Balkans', if you ask our Slavic neighbours south of us, they will often say that we are reserved or maybe a bit more rational&orderly than other Slavs in the Balkans. There is some truth to this. Even our most famous architect Jože Plečnik had a vision of Ljubljana as small Athens, because he noticed that the city was starting to look too German/Austrian...so he wanted to bring back that Mediterranean feel.

As a Czech, I feel a relatively strong relationship with Slovenia. We Czechs and Slovenians have Slavic roots, language and mentality, but at the same time we have quite visible cultural, architectural and genetic influences of German/Austrian entities. I have never been to Slovenia, but from the things I have seen and heard, it seems to me that we really have a lot in common, it even seems to me that more than we Czechs have with Poles and Slovenians with Croats or Serbs. I am Slovenian too. The most amazing fact about my homeland for me is, while other countries' anthems talk about war and rise of power and stuff, Slovenian anthems is a few verses of a poem called Zdravljica which basically means A toast, as in cheers. And it speaks about how all nations should be equal and each others neighbor rather than foe. And the whole poem of Zdravljica speaks about wine beautiful girls, having fun and friendship. Another cool things is that Slovene language has not only plural and singular, but "dual" as well. Yep! We speak differently if something regards one person, 2 or 3. Who would have thought that this robust sounding family of slavic languages could be so romantic. :)

So why are they 2 countries and not one. I know there is reason. Please educate me on history

@@KongSunWu it's rather simple actually, while we do have the same religion, we speak very different language. Croatia, BiH and Serbia all speak some kind of Croatian (though Serbia and BiH use Cirilica like Russians), while we Slovenians speak slovenian, which is very different and more difficult. P.S. Slovenia is more and more atheistic anyway. We don't give to much on religion nowadays.

Yugoslavia however did not align themselves with any of the two block. Even more, Tito lead the effort and successfully created what became known as the Non-aligned movement (NGM ) or 3rd block, a unity of countries all over the world that didnt chose a side in the cold war. Some of the other countries in this block included India and Egypt. The movement still exists today encompassing almost half of UN nations.

In earlier centuries, until 17 century same for big part of northern Croatia. Slovenci - Slovinci. Quite the same, isnt it ? ❤ to our Slovenian neighboroughs , beautiful country and people

Could it be because "Slovinci" were in fact "Slovenci", they just said it in their dialect? Slovenian is the most dialectally diverse language in the world; as an example of how much it can change from village to village, in my hometown for example we call ourselves "Slovajncə". We're taught in schools that in the 19th century there was German poet, Ljudevit Gaj, who convinced the Slovene people they will be speaking German if they don't start speaking Serbian, because there just aren't enough Slovenes and their heritage and identity would be lost to the German tide. We're taught that his efforts are what made change your identity.

Actually Slovenia is in central europe or to be more correct, its in the southern part of central europe just like Hungary, not southern europe as for the Language thing yes the language is Slavic But as culturaly I say we are very culturally Austrian, Germanic and you can see the effect of being under Austria-Hungary / Habsburg Empire control to this day. (But the last part is my opinion)

Shiny umbreon Germanic does not equate to national socialist, you idiot. Are you just going to erase a millennium of our own history because of a few decades of rule under some communist balkanegroe? The fact is, we are as Slavic as we are Germanic.

Funny how Slovenia is in southern Europe and Switzerland is central Europe , hilarious!. Both are Alpine countries. Russians are Slavic, Slovenians are as far away from them as is possible.

@@mattbarbarich3295 Slovenia is NOT an Alpine country. Only 20-25% of the territory is covered in Alps, and the largest city located inside the Alpines is Jesenice, which is only 11th countrywide. Calling is Alpine is explicit deception

I'm Slovenian and my country, even though it doesn't have a sounding name, as you say, already hides love in its name. Slovenia is like an oyster; the exterior is not the prettiest, but it hides a pearl inside. Beautiful nature, natural attractions and more and more.

Hello, I am from Slovenia and I found it really nice that you've "done" my country. First of all, the borders of A-H empire are a little bit wrong, Belgrade was never a part of the A-H empire - border was located just north of Belgrade, on the Danube river. Second, the first flag of Yugoslavia (till' 1929 known as a Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes) is also wrong. As it goes for referendum.. it was held on december 23th 1990 and the official results came out on the 26th of december. That is one significant date. After that all slovenian institutions had a 6 month period to change the laws and constitution, to change the names and functionality of government services, to reform the police and establish armed forces, to cut ties with federal customs and ministries, to entroduce new currency...etc. That deadline was set on 26th of june 1991. So on the very last day we declared independence. And that is a second significant date. That's why we have two "independence" holidays. Best regards! 🙂

It was written in National Geographic, somewhere in the 30s that Slovenians like to marry Germans. It was because of similar attitude towards hard work, fairness, discipline and other cultural similarities. That's why many of us still have German surnames. But in the last decades we had 50% population increase - I guess among the biggest immigration waves in the world - due to immigration from Balkan region things are getting different.
