"Entire Austria was buzzing with excitement as for the first time ever in the history of European zoos a panda baby was born naturally and in good health. In advance to this moment of happiness, a Chinese delegation called the little bear Fu Long - “Happy Dragon”.
ORF’s Natural History Unit accompanied the panda baby throughout the first moments of its young life. Witness Fu Long’s clumsy attempts at walking, playing around in the adjoining garden and canoodling with his mother Yang Yang. This documentary offers not only sensational exclusive shots of the newly born baby in its birth box, being taken care of by its mother and the little panda’s visits to the veterinarian to assure healthy development but also tries to uncover the secret life of one of the most endangered species in the world.
Fu Long is growing fast and getting cuter and lovelier every day. Have a look and join the “panda-mania” that crossed Austria’s borders spreading into whole Europe in no time."

How cute Fu Long .. he puts his arm out in the examination room. The middle care taker was impatient and not as gentle as one of his other main care takers

Why the BGM of scene about Chinese nanny take away the cub is so terrifying? Chinese protect Panda from hundreds to thousands by that way you know? Some panda mother that give birth twins would choose the stronger one to breed, the another would die if people don’t get the cub! Please tell guys full story and reason why Chinese nanny do that, instead not misunderstanding Gus with that episode!

Vielen dank! I think Fu Long was so lucky to spend as much as he could with his mom, without being put into the incubator. The natural way is always better than artificial way.

No, I lived in Chengdu, Sichuan for 7 years, the truth is you wont believe how many dead baby pandas herbal pickers found in the mountains every month. That's one of the reasons why they are endangered. Some pandas got a habit of ditching and abandoning their cubs simply just because they dont know what to do. Mom pandas accidentally hurt or killed their cubs is common too. To save those babies we need humans intervene to give them much surviving chance as possible
@garymoh4828
@garymoh4828 2 жыл бұрын
@@YoHoosierDaddy Actually in the wild, Panda mom tends to abandon the weaker of a set of twins, and only raise the bigger cub. Especially where panda pregnancies has about 50% resulting in twins and the other 50% are single birth. But there are also exceptions, there was a set of twins was filmed by IR camera in 2015 and another set of twins in 2019.

Great video demonstrates different approaches of keeping pandas. Chinese’s way is to increase the population in short period of time while the western approach is to reduce the human intervention. Neither is wrong but critical for preserving the specie.

They may have less “intervention” but it seems like they are more like things to be studied rather than live as close to wild as possible like in China.

The twins were born at the Wolong Centre, not at this zoo. That was just interspersed, to show how the birth of twins was managed. If Yang Yang had birthed twins, they may have had to do the same.

Feeding her apples is a way for them to be able to spray him on all parts of her body. The Vet was explaining that she wonders if the mother panda was enjoying the shower or was she just dealing w it bc of the apple reward. So, next time, the vet will shower the mother panda without giving her apples.

The Chinese government owns nearly all the giant pandas on earth and American zoos will shell out up to $1 million a year to rent just one. The lease usually runs for 10 years and you need to have two pandas to be part of the breeding programme, so it's not cheap and that's why you have to pay so much to see them.

LOL, do you know how many panda bases in China? More than 10. Do you know that most of the staff working there are mostly graduates with degrees related to animal and some even with doctorate degree. And since panda are solitary animal, they will be housed alone and taken care of by one of these graduates. Then there are also many graduates that doing research on breeding, genetics, rewild programmes & on the wild panda population etc in of some of the research bases. And since the captive population has crosses 673 as in Oct 2021, the number of graduate staff needed should be more than 1,000. Just look at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, there are 24 hrs staff working in the nursery, and staff taking care of adult pandas, and there is also a vet group that take care of their health and there are staff that maintain the base and security etc etc. All these loan monies from oversea zoo only cover some of these expenses. Then there are Forest Rangers from Forestry Dept that patrol & monitor the wildlife, installing IR camera in the nature reserves to monitor the wildlife including wild pandas. And "China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda" with the Forestry Dept are also working on "Giant Panda National Park" , they will be building forrested corridors between various wild panda populations so that gene flow could be easily exchange among the various wild panda populations etc. All these loan monies are for the conservation effort of panda, & not for the Chinese government because China is the world 2nd largest economy in the world, Chinese government earns trillions every year for example China's GDP for 2021 is US$17.7 trillions, therefore these millions of dollars from the loan of pandas to foreign zoos is nothing to them.

I like their approach so much better than Wolong. It drives me crazy seeing the baby snatched away from the mother the minute its born. Glad to see they're taking a more natural hands-off approach.
@kittygirl_thetortie498

They do that when the mother gives birth to twins. Pandas mother's usually will only choose to care for 1 of the newborn because she doesn't have the capability to take care of both. The other newborn usually dies in the wild. That is why usually take the newborns from the mom and what they do is they will give her 1 baby at a time and switch the babies thought out the day so both babies have equal chance to live. But I do agree that they do take the baby away from the mother early like after 3 or 6 months (baby pandas stay with their mothers for the first 3 years) for some reason (I can't remember as I watched the documentary few months ago..it's on KZfaq). Wolong is the first centre to have successfully raised twin panda babies.

These panda carers are not anxious when the mother panda didn’t eat. Their attitude are quite cold and stood back to observe only with just’ as a matter of factly’ manner which they called it with minimum human interfere unlike the Korean carer who was very worried and tried to get the mother panda everything to eat. They don’t seem to be passionate towards these animals.

In order to increase the population in a short period of time, Chinese breeders took the babies pandas away from their mother at only few months old so that the mother can continue to conceive babies given there is only three days in a year when they have the desire for mating. The babies are then ‘adopted’ by other foster mothers who have their own babies to look after.…those adopted babies are lucky if they are accepted by the foster mothers otherwise will be abused/rejected and grown malnutrition because the foster mothers refuse to feed them. Very inhumane.

I thought the Chinese were doing a great job with the Panda's . But now watching this video I must say that the Austrian Zoo does a much much better job with Pandas. Great handling. They are treated so well, the birth of Fu Long was so peaceful and natural , and they didn't bother him measuring him every day or separating him from his mom . In short , I think the Chinese "" experts "" have a lot to learn from the Austrian zookeepers . GREAT JOB !! and I am sorry that Fu Long was returned to CHina , I saw some videos of him , what a difference , he looks sad and sick . Pity .

Thought the majority of pandas give birth to twins. The mother can only care for one and let the other one die. The camp in China is to prevent the death of the other twin. Another thing, the zoo is critical to bringing awareness to the existence of those animals. I care more if I can see them in person then just watching them on TV or in a book. And it allows zoologist find a way to help this animals to thrive in the wild.

@Dave WA I agree. There is no perfect way to keep wild animals in captivity because that's not a situation they are even supposed to be in. It's all well and good for other zoos to take a different approach for their own research, but it's all thanks to Wolong's successful breeding practices that they can afford to spare some pandas and loan them to other research facilities. The drastic measures they've taken to keep twin-born pandas alive aren't perfect by a long shot but it helps to keep the numbers growing faster. If the long-term goal is to send some back into the wild, that's not a risk anyone would willingly take unless you have some kind of insurance...I just knew from watching how the comparisons played out in this clip that there would be critical comments on Wolong's approach and yet you just know that these are the same type of people who would cry foul if a twin-born panda was documented dying without any human intervention because the mother naturally abandoned it.
