Best video on the subject! Note the part at 4:30 where he INCREASES the tension on the original springs. This tension is counter-acted by the Back Box - keeping the floating bridge where it is, but now you have one set of springs PULLING and the Back Box PUSHING so that when you bend a string, break a string, or use your D-Tuna, you're more likely to stay in tune because the bridge stays where it is. If you still go out of tune when bending you need more tension on BOTH sets of springs. As you increase the tension it will take more effort to pull the bar up or down compared to a non-Back Box setup. To me the trade-off of not having the bridge move when bending strings is worth it.

Given your experience with the device, may I ask if, after the Black Box is installed, are you still able to perform tremolo "flutters"?

First off let me say I love the products FU-Tone puts out. For anyone installing this, do it around a new string change. I am not sure what magic he is working in the video but I would have required a magic screw and a magic screwdriver to get that screw in located closest to the bridge. I had to take the blackbox apart to install the piece that goes into the wood of the instrument. Then in order to put the unit back together, I had to remove the bridge entirely. Upon re-assembly of everything, I was able to follow the steps and it appears to be working really well. Not gig tested yet, but seems to be really stable from a tuning perspective. I am not an engineer, but a great improvement in my mind would be a wing coming off the main metal piece as the second screw hole (again the part closest to the bridge).

Super nice guitar! I might do a similar finishing to my currently-red guitar with the floyd rose. One question: Do I need to install a locking nut to get the best out of that floating bridge? My guitar currently has a normal nut.

On My Sterling AX 40D the Gotoh 1996t Trem is really stiff feeling? I have a Gotoh 1996t on another guitar and it feels silky smooth so it is not the trem? Is it the springs themselves OR is it the angle they are on from the claw?

Hey man! I’d love if you could upload a demo of you using this on a floating trem with the EVH d tuna just so I can hear how it stays in tune and how you pull up and everything. Or just give me your honest word you can pull up And down with d tuna on or off and everything stays in tune outside the usual string stretching. I want to install one so I could and I’d need to route out a spot on my guitar for the d tuna so I don’t want to do all that if I won’t be satisfied as can be. Appreciate it.

@@FloydUpgradeshello, i have a question about this that I have not been able to find the answer to. Maybe you could give me your thoughts? Can you set the spring tension on the stabilizer to be tight enough to easilydowntune the guitar? My purpose would be so that I can downtune the guitar down to Maybe a max of a step and a half down easily without having to readjust the Floyd bridge and still use the floating trem. Thanks

I was going to install this with a tremol no so I can set my trem to float or dive only I had the misconception that you tune the guitar to standard tuning and use the d tuner to change to drop d but I found out that you tune to drop tuning then use the d tune to switch to standard tuning so I figured if you set the Floyd to float in drop d you would be able to pull up but when you engage the d tuner you would have to be in dive only mode I might just get it and do some experimenting to find out for my self and post my results I might also make a video I also saw you can leave it floating with a trem stabilizer so I’m thinking about experimenting with having a trem stabilizer, tremol no and d tuner installed at the same time to get full function of my Floyd while it’s floating andbeing able to use the d tuner to quickly switch between standard to drop d I can contact you once I made my findings

Short of a Floyd Rose system, I’ve tried about everything in the book for standard Strat bridge stabilization, including a similar product that actually had not just one but two actuators. In theory you’d think that would have been even better, but after a short while it was back to the same old falling out of tune routine no matter how they were adjusted. The ultimate fix for me was to install “Raw Vintage” brand springs, and I used all 5 that come with the package. What makes them so nice is the tension does indeed feel like what I’d call vintage, circa 1960s Strats. They’re a bit lighter than any others I know of on the market (including Fender springs) and made a world of difference, just as much now as when I installed them a year ago. Best of all, they’re only about $25 a set and there are several varieties available.

The idea is that it prevents the tuning from going all out of wack when returning from a dive bomb and when doing deep bends. Below I included a demo of a similar product as well as a video by Herman Li detailing the issue the product hopes to solve (not directly about the product, rather about floating bridges as a whole) Demo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtqlfJp40ZjbYmg.html Herman Li Video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mt-qh61et56de30.htmlsi=ZICZWiFL14rvNBLU&t=432

It can be pretty finnicky at first. To me its easiest to "overdo it" at first then loosen it till its acceptable. Set the backbox spring itself as hard as it'll go (compress it all the way). Get the guitar in tune without the backbox in. Then move the other thumbwheel until the plunger its the tremolo sustain block. tighten the tremolo springs until the block is surely hitting the plunger, Check tuning again. Tighten the tremolo springs until they get so stiff that they blow past the backbox's spring. Loosen the tremolo springs back up until they are just not strong enough to push past the backbox spring. At this point it should be pretty damn stable but a little stiff. Loosen the tremolo springs until the amount the tremolo dumps forward when you do a regular string bend (not tremolo dive or pull!) bothers you. Loosen the spring on the backbox until it becomes too easy to pitch up the tremolo by putting your hand on the bridge.

I'm having the same problem. Followed the video, locked the nuts other than the top so I can go between E and drop D, and when I drop all the other strings go sharp. I messed with spring tension and the black box tension... couldn't get it to work. I might try reinstalling from scratch but I'm not very optimistic. Please reply if you get yours to work.

Was following this post because I had the same question about using the stabilizer. You guys have answered that even with tightening the spring tension on the stabilizer, you basically cannot downtune without adjusting tuning on all other strings but what about installing 2 stabilizers in the back? There's a video where he shows a brief glimpse of Steve Vai"s guitar and looks like he has 2. Anyone tried that or emailed Adam with their questions?
