I think I have to go with the 18mm simply because I have the 16 covered with the zoom and my prime 18 is the slow focus f2 version. I’m going to wait before pulling the trigger in case they upgrade the f2 as I prefer the smaller form factor.

I got majority wrong. The photos I thought were 18 turned out to be 16, so I was quite surprised because I actually enjoyed the 16mm photos more. I found that the composition was executed in a way where there seemed to be more depth. The composition allowed for the subjects to really pop from the environment, not many photographers can do that with the 16mm tbh. Overall, I feel you have more time with the 16mm and know how to make the photos pop.

I rented the 18mm to photograph the birth of my child and I absolutely loved it! The only wide angle lens I have is the 16-55 2.8, but didn’t want to have all that weight with me. Plus I wanted to take advantage of the fast aperture while we stayed at hospital. I was maybe 50\50 with my answers, but I’m not a professional just an amateur that couldn’t tell a real difference. As always your photos are amazing and I’m glad your back on KZfaq! I purchased your presets earlier this year to help me learn how to edit, worth every penny! Thank you, keep up the great work!

Hey Reg are you sticking with the xf18 1.4 over your older 16/23 for weddings now? Plus have you tried the new 23 1.4 r lm wr in comparison to the 18? Would love to minimize the load out by finding out if compromising the bokeh for a bit of versatility is worth it. I feel like it would for convenience as it sits nicely in between the 16/23 in turn doesn't cut into flow of the moment while shooting.

I actually guessed a good portion of these correctly! It’s a fairly small difference but I feel like the 16mm has a more “vast” feeling to it - while the 18 reminds me of the focal length of a smartphone, having that 27-ish mm focal length. My favorite lens on my Olympus OM film camera system is the 24mm so I guess the 16mm from Fuji still would be the lens I buy - even if the 18mm is probably optically superior. Thanks!

I got exactly 15/30 lol. Pretty hard to tell in some situations, interesting. Another thing I only just learned yesterday from Samuel Streetlife was that to get the exact same composition with the 28mm and 35mm, the difference is only about half-arms length in terms of camera position. So the 16 to 18 difference is probably even lesser. The only way to spot was looking for distortion, but in non-geometrical locations/compositions, it was a random guess for me.

The wider the mm the more pronounced the effect. Otherwise why would an 11-16 mm lens exist. 5mm seems way less than 28-35 but in reality it’s a big shift

pff: that was hard to tell: I got 16 right....as a happy fuji 16mm owner. I had a bit of a prejudice that the 18mm would do better in close up portraits and I sometimes misjudged that 18mm is still very wide. For my usecase I would still prefer the 16mm I think because I often can't back up to get everything in the frame. I love the 16mm for that :)

At the end of the day a client would not notice at all. I would pick the 18mm as it's more up to date, probably has a better user experience and is probably better engineered and future proofed. I dont think I would ever encounter a situation using a 16mm and think "Darn I wish I had an 18mm with me" or vice versa.

I would pick the 18 because it's more up to date too - except the 16mm is found used, in excellent condition locally, at a camera store,with a 90 day warranty for HALF of what it's selling for new and the new price has a hundred bucks off of it now. The issue for me is does that 18mm really have a $550 advantage? If I think, if I was going to buy today, brand new, I'd get the 18 but I think I'll buy the used 16mm for save the money. (And I also don't have a 40MP Fuji sensor camera, I'm sticking with the 26MP cameras.)

21 out of 30. Coming from a 15mm Leica LUMIX lens on a Pen F, I lean toward the 18mm but the 16mm has a lot going for it. I shot photos as a guest at a family wedding today with the 16-80 f4. It will be interesting to see what focal lengths I used when I process them.

@@Reggiebphoto well it was a very interesting set of results. I am new to Fujifilm and was varying my settings on my X-E4. As far as focal length, outside after the chapel with the estate house as a background, the 16mm setting reigned but inside I discovered my focal lengths were often at 15mm/30 equivalent like my old m43 Leica/ LUMIX or closer to 18mm. I also had great results with my 14mm f 2.8. I took some shots with my 27mm 2.8 but they were not helpful under the circumstances. I was also using my Godox flash for the first time and the results were better than expected considering I prefer natural light. I’m a theatre teacher and primarily a theatre, travel and portrait shooter ( portraits -I once did for a living) and I realized that shutter priority and manual is where I’m most comfortable. Some aperture and program priority modes were not as successful or a mixed bag. There is a steeper learning curve here than in past cameras and I’ve owned many brands especially Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic. Fuji’s setting options and the use of the Q menu will need closer attention.

I did alright, but I was surprised that photo #14 was shot with the 18mm since the architecture made it look so wide. I want to see a full review of the 18mm f1.4, but mainly video autofocus performance. I can't stand the 16mm's loud motor noise and if you set the camera to full auto you get that flickering effect which ruins your video. Sometimes I want to put the camera on a gimbal or tripod and not touch it.

The deciding point: what's the user experience? AF speed? AF Sound? How snappy and reliable does the AF work? Weight? Balance? In many cases, there is no visible difference to the 16-55/2.8. It's hard to see a difference between the 56/1.2 and the 50/1.0, but using these lenses is very different. The same with 33/1.4 and 35/1.4.

I noticed the difference on those that were shot parallel to the subject (same plane of vision) the 16 has a slight distortion on the corners and the subjects seem farther away from the camera, while the 18 keeps the proportions and has less distortion. Once you change to a lower or higher shots it gets tricky, but it's just a focal length difference, both lenses are amazing.

21 out of 30, though mostly because the difference in field of view, follow by the smoother bokeh/rendering the 18 produces. The 16mm seems to produce warmer colors and just slightly less sharpness which gives the images a touch of a filmic or dreamy look. I actually like that many situations. The 18mm is super sharp and it makes stunning images but they're also a bit more clinical. For video or shooting moving subjects the superior and silent AF on the 18mm is the way to go but for stills of less busy scenes I think I would often prefer the 16mm even though the 18mm is a step closer to optical perfection. Although it shouldn't be a deciding factor my fingers also find the clutch mechanism and the rectangular lens hood a joy to work with on the 16mm.

I missed like 10 of them. The ones with something on the side would show distortion from the 16. It would be great if you could compare the 18 1.4 with 18-55 and 16-80 for indoor family portrait type shots with many people (or some representation). I'm curious if you still need like f4 to get everyone in focus and then if so is there much of a difference. So 18 1.4 at f4, 18-55 at 18 f4, 16-80 at 18 f4. But if you can also show the 18 1.4 at a lower aperture to show if it really stands out or if we end up with some people out of focus or anything else.

I like your system. I got 14 right doing it Reggie's way. But some images highlight the uniqueness of each lens more or less. Then I did it your way. I picked blind my favourite images of those that represented the kind of images I want to be able to take with the lens. Result: 3 from the 16mm and 9 from the 18mm. The 16 is a love hate relationship for me. When you are up close shooting wide open with an interesting foreground element it's superb. But it's a bit of a one trick pony... as a general FL I dislike the dead space you can often get and that the viewer can seem less part of the action as a result. That being said, I have both lenses. I was supposed to sell the 16, but am having a hard time letting go of it! As Reggie mentioned in one of his responses, with the 18 I can still get as close as I tend to with the 16... So that unique feature is not lost for me - only the perspective changes. And I found myself using the 18 where I might otherwise have used the 16 or 23, so it's much more versatile. This video helped me decide to put the 16 up for sale. I definitely can't justify having both!

I got 13 right, 13 wrong, and for 4, I have no idea. I'm quite surprised by how 18 fills in for 16 without any distortion.

19/30 here. What I learn from that? It doesn't matter what lense. It's still the head behind the cam for this application . Both are not wide enough for me an the bright aparture is wasted. I need a 10-12mm zero distortion lense for deep, clear an straight structures (real estate indoor). f5.6 would be ok. So I take a look at Venus Optics. Great content though 👍

I think 16mm focal length is good for you. Your 16mm look just a bit better. 18mm seem more plain. Your 16mm shots are more dramatic.

I think the mere fact that this "Spot the Difference" test has to be done proves that there really isn't much of a difference between 16mm and 18mm. As photographers, we kinda have a vague idea of what tools we should use for specific shots. I knew that for wider shots, I'd want the 16mm, so I subconsciously thought "I know what he's trying to capture, so he's probably using 16mm here." even though I couldn't tell the difference between the actual focal lengths. I'd also subconsciously think about wanting 18mm over the 16mm for human-centric shots to avoid distortion. Simply having an idea of what Reggie wants to capture affects my lens choice, so the test is kinda biased haha. However, I really couldn't tell a difference in the end. I got 18/30 correct.

Yup. But for me I own both and have different uses for both. So for me the 2mm doesn’t make the difference. The distortion rendering doesz

I prefer 16mm purely because there is more character with that lens.

@@Reggiebphoto You know the magic that comes from 16mm it was your favourite lens.
@Reggiebphoto

It wasn’t magic. I describe what phenomenon I liked about it. And it wasn’t character. It was close focus with high magnification which actually is reproducible in the 18mm 1.4 for the degree of magnification i need ha. Which is why the 16 is no longer my favorite

How about carry it all day comfortably, close focussing, lowlight shooting with low noise, shallow depth of field, use it in the rain with no worries, achieve minimal distortion without softening the corners through prost processing. These are all things both the, 16 and 18 can do. Not saying there is anything wrong with the 16-55, but there is a lot you can do with them that you can't with the zoom. Vice versa, you can't zoom with the primes and don't have the convenience that goes with that. Different lenses for different types or shooter/needs.
@Nessunego
@Nessunego 2 жыл бұрын
@@brownbear100 When I shoot at 16mm (24mm FF eq) I don't use a shallow deph of field, I don't need a fast aperture for lowlight as I mainly shoot static subjects with a stabilized camera or tripod. The 16-55 is weather sealed and a "red badge" professional lens, no need to worry about weather. Yes it'heavier than the 16mm, but it's an f/2.8 zoom, didn't expect it to be lighter, but it's much lighter than it's FF siblings, so I don't mind at all.
