Fuji surprised everyone at Photokina 2016 by announcing the GFX, the most full featured mirrorless medium format camera available. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to test this exciting new camera in Japan, doing some landscape, and street photography. Also, we met up with professional photographer Brent Taylor to see how the GFX handles in a studio situation.

The translation is unnecessary and somewhat patronising IMO (as an Australian I have no difficulty following what he's saying). It's also fascinating to see our host slipping into a South African accent himself.

Even though it's the internet I'm a little surprised at just how contentious an issue this video is creating and I feel it important for clarity sake to state for the record where my opinion lies on the GFX. So here goes. I love street photography. Fuji Japan was surprised at how much interest the GFX generated among street photographers when polled. Medium format mirrorless is a new frontier and promises being possibly lighter, faster, and more discreet, all things which may appeal to street photographers. Medium format is not ridiculous for street photography, Mamiya 6s, and 7s, for example are excellent for this, and who is anyone to say what a person can and can't shoot with or for what reason? Hasselblad 500CM on the street? Why not. Weegee shooting 4x5 press cameras on the street? Why not. Terry Richardson using point and shoots in the studio? I wouldn't, but why not. An artist may want the aesthetic that medium format offers for any kind of photography including street and I was quite happy with the photos that the GFX delivered for me in this environment. In the end I didn't find the Fuji GFX to be that well suited for street photography nor do I advocate its use as such, but I wanted to test it and see, which is part of the point of reviewing a camera in the first place. We also tested it for landscape in this video, and some commercial work as well, to give a more full concept of its full potential across many fields, and not exclusively as a street camera. I never complained about 125th sync speed, and in fact feel this is a minor issue, easily worked around, which I state in the video. I think it's awesome for travel photography personally, and we also happened to be travelling so why wouldn't I test it as such? And why would it need to be relegated in such a limited way only to studio shooting, and tripod work? The GFX as a selfie camera sucks! It's the worst possible selfie camera of all time. Don't buy the GFX people, because its a terrible selfie camera! And also that was all OBVIOUSLY a f#&king joke. Thanks. CHRIS @ TCSTV

TheCameraStoreTV Excellent video Chris! People who can't afford this will find something to complain about. These camera people should be happy to see a real camera in public instead of an iPhone. If I owned this camera, I would use it for everything too. It is a masterpiece by Fuji. Hopefully they come out with a full frame.

phuzzz82 it’s a big piece of kit when constructed, however it’s lighter than you think but the lenses are quite heavy. I used it for 3 weeks in Iceland and it rocked and helped me create some super images for a 2019 Fine Art Calendar. A selfie camera it is not but a damm great camera for serious work and it’s focus in extreme challenging weather was outstanding.

I can't understand why people are so salty about this?? TCSTV is a very self aware channel, and the reviews are therefore often made with tongue-in-cheek. I feel like people are perhaps getting a bit too granular with their own personal analysis of TCSTV's take on a camera.

I took a trip to New York this year with my Fujifim X-T1 put a 27mm pancake lense and carried a 50mm. It wasn't ideal but it was light. First time using a wrist strap. Thanks for the idea Chris. When I'm on vacation I like limiting my gear. I once had a tripod off camera flash remote for a Upper Pennisula Michigan trip, waterfalls every where. I got great shots but it was a lot of work and a little ridiculous.

Took the Fuji GFX50s with me on a trip through Ireland. Great, great performer. This camera is simply stunning for Landscape and portraits. Damn. No regret I sold all my Sony stuff. The Fuji is (not only from the technical data) way ahead of everything Sony can offer for landscape and portraits. Specifically I mean here the HMI which is really, really intuitive. Yes, it's not a camera for street photography. For their purpose I have the Fuji X-T2 :)

Great video. I really enjoyed it, even if I might never buy a Fuji GFX. What I have seen from this camera (and the Pentax 640 and the Hasselblad) is that the 50Mp larger sensor doesn't improve the image quality that much compared to modern full frame camera's. The difference with the Fuji XT camera's is obvious, but if I compare this to a modern Canon, Nikon or Sony the gap is so much smaller. I think Fuji has done a marvelous job with the GFX. It is really impressive as a system and it will grow, but it should grow significantly on image quality. From a practical point of view, a lighter full frame will be much handier while traveling. Thanks to Brent Taylor for contributing. Wonderful photography.

X1D is certainly a potential game changer when it was firstly exposed, but lack of focal plane shutter, handicapping the adaption of other lenses, greatly impaired its practicality. One of my friend, a Linhof and Alpa user, used to be very excited about GFX. After proving the smearing effect on GFX when using Diagron HR lenses by Rodenstock, he sold his GFX. Unlike how NEX series and A7 work as universal digital back in 135 system, there is simply not so many optional lenses for medium format users to choose for GFX. Meanwhile, the G-Mount does not look very promising for adopting larger sensors like a full-frame medium format (54mm*40.5mm) CMOS that is used by Phase One and Hasselblad in their flagship products. The GFX and X1D are certainly milestones of the photography history, just like SONY NEX 5 and A7. But unlike 135 cameras, being professional/superrich aimed product while not being easy to use like 135 or M43 cameras, neither as powerful as the full-frame medium format mirrorless that is meant to come in the future, these two systems may as well become no more than a foot note, for the beginning of this new era.

Hi, I know you heated the Hasseldlad X1D, But I just been to one of the camera store in the UK and took both cameras out that the Fuji GFX and the Hasseldlad X1D and I found the Fuji uncomfortable to hold just awkward to control in manual i.e. changing most of the setting other than aperture. As to the image quality there was little to no difference on what I shot, But when I have look at other test I think the Hessalbad is still just a small bit better. But the Hessablad is so much nice in the hand. You have got to remember that both of these cameras are medium format and need to be used as such.

Good to have the specific strong and not so strong points highlighted as was done but I personally don't see this camera as a street photog rig but then I don't see a d5 or 5d as street rigs either. That was the point of the x series , especially the xe/xp and other smaller cameras wasn't it ? I guess one can use anything for whatever one wants but it is a large camera which defeats the non intimidating appeal of the x line to carry for street work.

TheCameraStoreTV may I ask you how could you shoot handheld with the GF110 at 1/100th? I've used it for a job, and even with the 63mm and a flash I had to use a tripod for the little shaken images at 100% (enlarged 1:1) I can shoot with 1/10 or 1/15th with my A7R3 and the 55mm but I think it's quite impossible to achieve 100% steady shots as I saw in the video with such a long lens and no IBIS.... May I also ask you if the autofocus in normal daylight is any good as the "old" Fuji XT1? I'm really interested in buying the GFX50R sooner or later Thank you

Nice video, well done. I bought the Fuji GFX50s about 3 weeks ago. I own also the Fuji GF 63mm 2.8 and Fuji GF 23mm 4.0 lenses. The camera basically delivers great pictures. No doubt about that. However, I changed back yesterday the Fuji GF 23mm 4.0 for the 2nd time. In both cases, a failure saying "Switch camera off and on again" error appeared. And this message never disappeared again, even after following the instruction. And this error message also goes with the camera, means, in case I use this failed lens on an other GFX body, the same message appears. And this behaviour can be reproduced (at least my case the described procedure was applied): I used the Fuji GF 63mm first for quite a while and changed then to the Fuji GF 23mm 4.0 and continued shooting. Sooner or later, typically after some hours this error message pops up. If I only use the Fuji GF 23mm 4.0 then I never had any issue. Now, I forwarded per request the GFX and the failing lens to Fuji because they kept saying the first lens is working (what is not the case on all the bodies I tried before, also verified by the dealer). One week my gear will be gone now, then let's see. I expect here a clear and unambiguous answer from Fuji. If not, the gear will go back together with the lenses and I am done with Fuji. Sorry, man, but the Fuji GFX system looks quite unstable and not finished yet. Including the well praised Fuji service. Yes, I am disappointed.
@Stefan1968ful
@Stefan1968ful 7 жыл бұрын
Today I returned my Fuji GFX50s plus Fuji GF23mm and the Fuji GF63mm. Because Fuji insisted on that when they received the camera it was working together with the "failing" Fuji GF23mm lens. It is enough, both me and also the folks at the local Fuji dealer experienced this issue. We taped it also on video. Fuji is selling actually all of us as stupid obviously. I am done with Fuji, the GFX50s I cannot recommend, it is not a stable product and more important, the Fuji service sucks. I will go back to Nikon, good is that the Nikon d820 is coming. Never had any issue with Nikon, not their products, not their service. Hands away from the Fuji GFX50s, that's my recommendation.

I too enjoy these TCS videos and I am here mostly for the reviews as photography for me is just a hobby. Always great narration, reviews, camerawork etc. Thanks guys.

How did you get almost no noise with the high iso night shots in low light? i feel like once you go over 1600-3200 and beyond the photos look super super noisy and unusable in most cases. What are you doing in post to clear them up?
