‪@lomographicsociety‬ recently sent me their new instax wide film back for 4x5 cameras. the process is quite interesting and different from typical photography, especially for me, someone who doesn't shoot 4x5 that much. i still enjoyed the process - this is what makes film photography fun.
All footage was shot in Brighton, England.

Just wanted to say, unlike Polaroid film, Instax exposes from the back and therefore doesn’t need an opacifier. What that means in practical terms is you don’t need to shield it from light while it’s developing. In my experience the film is spot on in iso, if anything it can benefit from +1/3 of a stop for shadows at times. How accurate is the shutter in your graflex? It looks like it might be lagging slightly and over exposing. Great to see the the instax in use out in public!

@ribsy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, my camera shutter operates totally fine as far as I know. The key is that instax film has very poor dynamic range so you kinda have to pick what you want to be exposed properly

Great to see the graflex having a run. Remember though its a press camera, it is meant to be used hand held, run and gun - swapping film holders and popping flash bulbs red hot straight into your hand. Photogs were made of sterner stuff back in the day 😎

@@ribsy The Lomograflok back has a focusing plane that is moved back further right? You could adjust the rangefinder to compensate for that, or you might just even be good with the lens stopped down far enough.

Looks like a great day out! I have not shot any instax in my 4x5 yet. And, honestly, I am not sure I will. I *want* to like Instax but so far, it just doesn't grab me. The BW version is better but I have not yet been happy with any of my color shots made with it. Your portrait of the woman is really good the other shots you shared with us are fine but let down by the Instax film, I think. I started using 4x5 as a way to help me become more deliberate in my photography and the photos I choose to make. The slowing down required to use my camera has helped with that. In fact, my first--and only so far--4x5 camera was made just a few blocks from where you were for this video: I bought an Intrepid 4x5 camera made. I hope you had some time to go see those guys. Great fun to watch and thank you for sharing this!

Fair points. The beauty of all this is that instax is a cheaper way to practice 4x5. Film isn’t too expensive AND no developing necessary
@robbiemer8178

@@ribsy True. Part of my issue with Instax is that I am old enough to have used Polaroid films when they still were making their peel apart 4x5 films and I really need to rethink my expectations of current instant films. And I need to work more to play to the strengths of Instax rather than treating it as some "lesser" polaroid. Some of my contemporaries spend a lot of time bemoaning the films we don't have anymore and I think that is not very productive. I do miss a few films but I also have no way to bring them back, so, for me, I have to find what current films will let me make the photos I want to make today. Thankfully there are enough. I do think there are great photos being made with Instax, I just haven't made any yet.

Is the rangefinder not adjusted? I have a 4x5 press camera similar to yours and it's got a kalart coupled range finder. Not sure mines adjusted either it's something I've been meaning to check. Not sure it'd make much difference with how the film back you are using moves the film plane back like you mentioned.

It is interesting that lomography is making these back available to a lot of youtube presenter but can't seem to get them to the people that have already preordered them. First they wrote it was definitely going to be April 2021 for the early group, then it was going to be, for sure, August 2021. Of course, they didn't meet either of those. Now it appears that people who ordered in China will get theirs ahead of people who ordered in the USA. Now they are taking about late November/December 2021 before the USA pre-orders will be serviced. I'm willing to make a bet that they will miss that date also. Yet, in spite of not being able to meet deadlines they keep sending units to be reviewed. These reviews are a bit frustrating as one can see potential but one has no one of getting to it as the vendor keeps missing delivery dates. Maybe they should have been made in VietNam or India rather than China. Shame as the idea is super.
