Fuji's BEST Prime lenses? These three are my favorites. When I first started with the Fuji system I had to sell my whole Canon system or part of it just to get started. So I researched what the best lenses would be for the type of photography I do. I intended to still do some photojournalism on the side but wanted to start doing more landscape work. This meant size, weight, and cost were part of the equation. This is why I went with Fujifilm. I borrowed a complete set of lenses to go with the X-T3 I had rented. This included two of the lenses I mention here, the 16mm f1.4 and the 90mm f2.0. I used these lenses quite a bit that week along with the 16-55 which I loved but it was really heavy. I did more research and when I bought gear I started with the 16 f1.4 and the 90 f2.0. As far as primes go I would stack them up against anything in the Canon, Nikon, or Sony range. They are beautiful. I also borrowed the 23 f1.4 from my friend but even though the results are beautiful the size, non weather sealed, and slow focus through me off. So Instead I went with the much smaller, lighter, weather sealed and fast focus 23 f 2. It's easily one of my most used and favorite lenses.

I have xpro3 with the bare minimum 23mm,16mm and the 35mm. A small bag that holds it all. They are light and fast enough for my photography. I come from a Nikon system with way to much stuff and I am so happy to be able to concentrate on a smaller set up with fantastic results. I have been shooting for 50 years and my best is yet to come!

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Here's my problem, I desperately want to get some primes but the 18-55 kit lens is so good I never did get a prime.... The same holds true for my Nikon bodies with a few exception. I did covert my summies (35mm and 50mm) to both Fuji and Nikon Z. Enjoyed the video.... Looking forward to that zoom vid you enthusiastically mentioned....

Love how real your videos are, I haven’t used my 16mm 1.4 much but after seeing what it can do indoors and in low light I’m super excited to go shoot some more. Buying the 90mm F2 for concert shooting from the crowd (no pit access yet) which I think it will be perfect for. Agree with someone else that I found no need for my 23mm after I got the x100v.

I have the 16mm as well, but went with the f/2.0 due to its small size and weight. LOVE that lens. And I also have and agree with you on the 23mm and 90mm lenses. Tack sharp and also relatively small and light. And you will love the 50mm as well, which I also have. I'm using a Zeiss 12mm for my real estate listings shoots, another great lens, and for my "normal lens" shoots I have the Fuji 35mm. A while back I sold all my Nikon mirrorless gear and switched to Fuji. Very happy I did....

Love the shot thru the window with the side light hitting the wall from the second window... simple but great! Exposure is everything for that shot and you nailed it. I have a lot (13!) of Fujifilm glass. You should follow up and get that 50mm Fujicron. Its exactly like the others in that series, fast to focus, weather sealed, and perfectly sharp at full aperture. Every time that I think about "upgrading" to the 56mm f/1.2, I just review the many hundreds of terrific shots from the 50mm on my computer and it placates my G.A.S.

@KirkWilliamsonphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kalender. For my purposes I picked the Fujilux 16 1.4 because in my opinion and for my purposes it’s a better lens. That’s not to say that “classic” 50mm ff is not great because it is. The results are stunning just like the 23 1.4 But for my journalistic style I have always used the 24 mm ff and very rarely used the 50mil. But I’m starting to use my Leica 50 Summilux more. So you never know I might look into the new 33 1.4 down the road used. I know I will borrow it if I can.

I agree on the 23mm F2. I don't own it but I use the X100V all the time, and I totally understand the small form factor and image quality you can get out of it. This is a lens / camera that you can bring everywhere and it's so enjoyable. IMO the X100V has a lot more going for it, but it's just a fixed focal length and I really struggled between the 23mm F2 and the X100V during purchase. The close focusing capability of the X100V sold it for me, along with the leaf shutter and built in ND are bonus.

I have the 50mm f2, and I think it's a very underrated lens; I love the results I get from this lens. I think you will really enjoy it. I can't decide between the 90mm or the 80mm. There seems to be a great divide in the house of KZfaq about which one is the best performer. I want to shoot more macro, but I also shoot candid portraits. Decisions, decisions. I am afraid your thoughts and experience with the 90mm haven't made it any easier.🤣🤣🙏🙏

Thanks Bugs! Look at it this way. The 80 is not a portrait lens. The 80 is a macro lens and the 90 is way better at portraits than the 80. Don't get me wrong the 80 isa beautiful lens and can be used for portraits but it really is a macro lens and it shines in that capacity. The 90 is a portrait or action lens or for me a documentary lens as well as an action sports lens.

Excellent observations, my first time on your channel. I own only one lens the 23f2 and it does not disappoint. I am now ready to buy a second lens and traveling in the Villages and Mountains of the Alps. My question is regarding the 90mm which I am intrigued with and now after watching your video might be the answer in the Mountains as a travel lens. I do not shoot sports right now but with grandkids that can change. I will watch your video regarding zooms ( 16-80 ) and make a decision. Regarding the 50 f2 my concern is a mid range focal length vs. the 90 f2 which gives you motor reach.

I use the 14 f2.8 & 23 f2 the most . Sometimes an old Meyer Trioplan 50mmF2.9 , Meyer Oreston 50mmF1.8, Zuiko 50mm F1.4 or new TTArtisans 50mmF1.1. That is on my XPro-2. Have also adapter for my Nikon stuff. That is the advantage of mirrorless , you can adapt almost everything & the electronic viewfinder shows what you will get. My D850 is mostly on the shelf , use it mostly either for astro or macro.

When I was shooting 35mm film with my Nikon F SLR, my favorite three prime Nikon lenses were: 1. 35mm f/1.4 2. 85mm f/1.4 3. 24mm f/2 When I started shooting Fuji APS-C digital, I tried to duplicate my Nikon lenses by buying the following three Fuji lenses: 1. 23mm f/1.4 2. 56mm f/1.2 3. 16mm f/1.4 When I need to use something wider on my Fuji, I use a Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 (Fuji X mount). When I need to use something longer on my Fuji, I use a Zeiss 135mm f/2 (adapted Nikon F mount).

I have the XT3 with the battery grip and some zooms, I bought the camera with the 18-55 kit lens which is my favorite too. I love the composition and color rendition of your images, what do you use for editing? Staight Photoshop or any other software? Love your reviews! What do you think about 16mm f/2.8. I know you might not own it, but would you prefer it or replace it for the 23mm or the 16mm f/1.4?
@KirkWilliamsonphotography
@KirkWilliamsonphotography 2 жыл бұрын
I think at this point I would not replace my 16 f1.4 or my 23 f2. The 16 f2.8 is a beautiful lens as part of the Fujicron line up. When I started with the Fuji system the 16 f1.4 was arguably their best prime. Weather sealed, close focusing, faster focusing than the earlier primes, and incredible sharpness and color rendition. The new smaller 16 f2.8 now does most of all that at a much smaller cost but two stops less light at 2.8. For my photojournalism work I prefer the extra light at 1.4.

Hahaha, on the comment about some of the other KZfaqrs and their lens juggling and lack of demonstrative photos! ;) When I volunteered to do some event photos, inside some higher education buildings/classrooms, I was always amazed at the lack of light for photography there was! Even worse, I usually had to use a slower zoom vs. a prime as I couldn't move around much and cause a distraction. I sure could have used your recommended lenses, and another camera body to switch between lenses without changing lenses. Can' wait for you zoom lenses presentation. Try to juggle two of them, at the same time, will you please ;)

Just curious, how are were you shooting indoors with the 90mm F/2? Because I really want a fast tele lens for indoors, and am considering the 50-140. But that lens is just too darn heavy and big (and expensive!). If I can work well with the 90mm F/2, I'd go for it. Thanks in advance!

Alan the 90 is my indoor sports lens. it's right in the middle of the 50-140 range at 137 FF equivalent. I love it, focuses extremely fast (quad motor). You will not be sorry. I have used the 50-140 for hockey and basketball but keep going back to the 90 f2 for the size, weight, and fast aperture.

Looking at your night photos of the pageant taken at 1/30th sec, how can you handhold the 90 on an XT-3 at that speed to get sharp images? I can’t even do that with my 35 f2. I own the 16 1.4, 35 f2, 33 1.4, 16-80 and 55-200. My intended use is travel with the family, which Includes a mixture of street, portrait, architecture, and landscape. Based on your other review, I’m thinking of trading in the 55-200 for the 70-300. I am intrigued by the 90, however, due to its legendary optical performance.

The soft edges are from those areas being out of the depth of field. Fuji does not make a 16 f2. 2.8 yes. They also do not make a 16 f1.2 it's a 1.4 and it is widely regarded as Fuji's sharpest wide angle for the X- series cameras. Although now it might be the 33 1.4.
