Waiting this afternoon for the UPS guy to deliver my first Fujifilm camera, X-T20. Can't wait to get rolling using it. Nice to see guys who can use and enjoy two (or more) camera companies.

Hi Eric, your feelings about X-T1 mirror my experience. I sold my X-T1 to buy an X-Pro2 and was loving the experience but as an amateur photographer of many decades stopped and wondered about the price/performance comparison. To make sure I tried out the X-T2 for six months and came to the same conclusion. The results of the X-T1 were still fantastic and the other two were a little more fantastic for 3x the price. I could not justify the cost if these newer models and with all the firmware upgrades the X-T1 was a great tool. I am so happy to have returned to the earlier model graphite of course and simplified my outfit to a Superb 10-24, 23 f1.4, 50mm f2. Never been happier after 50+ years of taking pictures. I couldn’t afford to keep my old Nikon full frame but kit and have not regretted the move.

I still use the X-T1, which is way underpriced at 500 or so dollars . Just wait for the X-T3 to come out, you will likely get an X-T2 for super cheap used.

Great job! I’m glad you mentioned that it doesn’t have to be one brand vs another or mirrorless vs dslr. I have canon gear and recently acquired Fuji gear. As you pointed out, there’s room for both.

I think the reason why you think the xt1 looks sharper than the xt2 is because when both are zoomed in to 1:1 with the same lens, the xt2 will be zoomed in further than the xt1 due to the higher resolution, which will start to show more optical imperfections. If you down sample the files of the xt2 to match the resolution of the xt1, then zoomed into 1:1 the xt2 should look about the same.

Justin Fuller: This. There is no logical reason why the X-T1 would be sharper. Not only does the X-T2 resolve more, the only way for something to be less "sharp" is a lens or the autofocus/manual focus. The sensor should not affect sharpness. To be honest, I'd imagine the autofocus is significantly better on the X-T2.... So should produce as sharp or better.

Awesome video. I picked up the X-T2 last October after using the X-T1 for over a year. I have to agree with you on the X-T1 files. I'm a Lightroom user and I like the way LR renders the X-T1 files better than the X-T2. I've printed several 20x30 prints with the X-T1 and gotten fantastic results. The X-T1 still has a place in my bag! Also, Fuji lenses are killer. I'm a prime shooter and the fact that you can get 1.4 and 1.2 lenses for a lot less than the Canon and Nikon equivalents is incredible. Not to mention the image quality is on par if not better than Canon and Nikon. By the way, I came from shooting Canon and Nikon. The D750 was my favorite DSLR I had ever used. The dynamic range and ISO performance on that thing were incredible. While my X-T1 wasn't as good, I found that it more than held it's own against the D750. Very respectable for an APS-C chip.

KentuckyMan30 Your last sentence contradicted itself. The X-T1 (or X-T2) high ISO image quality doesn't even come close.
@KentuckyMan30
@KentuckyMan30 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure how the last sentence contradicted myself. The X-T1 isn't as good as the D750 at high ISO's and dynamic range, but it holds it's own. Holding it's own doesn't mean it's the same or better than the D750, it just means it performs respectably when comparing the two. Now, you may disagree that the 2 aren't even close, but that doesn't mean I contradicted myself.

I dipped a toe in Fuji buying an XE2 and 27mm for light travel shooting. I don’t see Fuji replacing my nikon gear anytime soon. You spell out some of the reasons, but there are so many things that get in the way and the post processing takes a lot more time. I’m trying to figure out what is “better” about it? Noise of the shutter is about the only thing. I like the quiet. Makes me appreciate the refinement of the nikon gear.

Excellent! Thanks. There are currently some great deals on the X-T1.. B&H has the body w/32GB SanDisk card and Watson battery for $600, body w/18-55 $900, body w/35mm $1000. I had an X-T2 for a while but returned it and purchased a D7500. I enjoyed the size/weight, manual controls, and JPEGs on the X-T2, but I just couldn't give up my OVF.

Excellent review, well thought out and presented. However I will comment about one thing you said at 22:55 - apart from vlogging why on earth would you want a flip out screen? Have you ever tried to shoot quickly and unobtrusively with the flip out screen? It is an absolute pain in the bum... seriously it’s slow, obtrusive and conspicuous. Thank goodness Fujifilm and Sony are staying with the tilt screen, and now it seems only Canon want to move forward the the daft flippy out screen. Let’s leave them to it huh :) Thanks again.

I love to hear you guys say VR is not needed. I can't believe the amount of people that just can't live without it. I was in that ballpark myself until I got talked into buying the Nikon 17-55. I bought a D500 with the 16-80 VR lens. I watched a Angry Photographer video about how much he hated that lens and to replace it with the 17-55. I bought a nice used copy on Ebay and was shocked at how much better it was than the 16-80 and that all my pictures where sharp without VR. It was because of my great luck with the Nikon that I bought the Fujifilm 16-55. I got the same result. Take sharp pictures on my X-t2. What I'm trying to tell you sports fans, don't woose out on buying a great lens just because it doesn't have vibration reduction. Even if you have the shakes, you just boost the shutter speed up a tad.

Hi Eric, I just made the switch from Canon to Fuji and wanted to add something with regard to the ISO performance. First, I think my X-T2 is very good when it comes to high ISO for an APS-C camera but it clearly has more noise at high ISO than my 5DIII or my 6D had. But it's not just about the noise. To me, the X-T2 though having more noise also keeps more detail at high ISO than the Canon cameras did. It has more noise but it is sharper at high ISO. So in post I have the ability to trade a little bit of sharpness for less noise and I still get better results than I would have gotten with the Canon system. And there is another plus when it comes to low light photography with the Fuji: I feel almost no to no need to stop the Fuji lenses down to get good results. Even the canon L-lenses I had to stop down in bad lighting. So basically shooting an event with the Canon or Tamron 2.8 was actually shooting an event with a F/4.0. With the Fuji glas I don't feel the need. I can shoot the 2.8 or one of the F2 primes wide open without regret and thereby the ISO performance of the body becomes less critical to me. Overall, I personally feel that my low light concert pictures from the XT2 are as good as those I made with the 6D in terms of image quality. I'd really like to hear your thoughts on that... Thx in advance!

For the kind of work that I do, the XT2 is just great - Portraits, Graduation Albums. The 24 mpx resolution is the sweet spot, for medium and small prints, the colors are beautiful, the ergonomics are useful. For profesional landscapes, sports - yeah, there are better machines. Still, the value you get for the price, and the overall quality is great.

High Eric nice review straight wayward and to the point. Due to old age and problems carrying my kit D800e plus three lenses (the heavy 2.8 ones) up and down hills in Scotland I decided to look for alternatives. Six months were spent with a loaned XT2 +16-55mm & 50-140mm and comparisons were made between the different raw files produced between both systems. Bottom line was that the D800e was better BUT not by a lot or at least with my old eyes and I really took to the XT2 and lenses. Couldn't afford to keep both systems so the d800e kit went! of course I miss my big dslr but at the end of the day had to be sensible and move on to the new system. Have to say so far so good. X-Trans files handled differently so Lightroom defaults had to be changed and presets made to accommodate different sharpening techniques and other than that images are great and I'm satisfied all round. Do a bit of stock photography to get skill set up and pass their QC {also make small amounts money} and so far the images submitted OK. Not a great one for primes (old and lazy) but I may get the 23mm eventually and anyway !! thats me said my bit now away out to take pics thanks for review and earlier videos on the system. Jim

Funny thing for me is that I got a Nikkor 80-400 AF-D lens for my X-Pro2 to get eclipse shots - worked great. A month later I got a used D300s for the lens so that I could have a dedicated "wildlife" WR system. My X-E2, X-T1, and X-Pro2 can then used for other things. So here I was all Fuji and now I'm Fuji and Nikon. :p I happen to have small hands so the D300s is a little to big for me. Do you know if the D810 or D500 have about the same grip as the D300s? Also, good point about the sun stars between the X-T1 and X-T2. I'm going to have to check with my X-T1 and X-Pro2. Thank you for your honest opinion. I'm glad to see that there are other people out there that don't mind using more than one camera system. I thought that was "normal" back in the days of film.

Eric - yes , yes, yes - I 100% agree about the files on the X-T1, compared to X-T2. I fell into Inle Lake (Myanmar), last year, and insurance replaced my drowned X-T1, for the new model X-T2. I had one X-T2 already, but now I have two. However, man I really miss the files from my X-T1. The X-T2 files are great, but there was something about those 16m files from the X-T1. I cannot replicate that look on my X-T2. I am currently trolling 'fleabay' to find a good used, cheap, X-T1. Except for the fact the autofocus tracking on the X-T1 was subpar (and I did miss many shots), I would be more than happy to swap both of my cameras back to X-T1, that is how magic the files were.

Based on what is said around 12:00 - you could make a case for over exposing shooting the X-T2 - maybe about a stop, then fix post. Especially in low light, this could be an interesting technique, will allow you to raise the dark areas and get less muddiness? You are trading dynamic range from very bright areas down to the dark areas you want to recover. BTW, got X-T2 and D810 as well, love both systems.

After using and owning a X100S/T for a couple years, I dumped what little Nikon gear I had left (D700 and a couple primes) for an X-T2 and a few lenses. After a few months there were things that I really loved about the Fuji gear, but there were things that I missed with the Nikon gear. The biggest thing for me was missing the ergonomics and robustness of the Nikon bodies that and the wider range of more affordable lenses and accessories. I also found Nikon files much better to work with in post.

Well done on this very informative video. Keep up the great work! I’m an amateur photographer and my first DSLR was a Nikon 5100. Then I got a Fuji X100s and fell in love with it. I now want to make the jump to all Fuji. I was leaning toward the Fuji X-T20, but after watching your video, I’m now thinking about getting an X-T1. I strictly shoot for fun. Most of what I shoot is limited to family gatherings and occasional travel as well as some nightclub / behind the scenes at the places and private events I DJ. I emphasize that I’m the epitome of amateur (i.e. no tinkering / post processing except iPhoto, lol!) I’m curious to know if you have any thoughts on which you would suggest I get. Thank you in advance for your time.

Well, the only thing I would miss with only Fuji would be the long tele lenses I can get for Nikon such as a Nikon 600mm f/4 or 'just' even a Nikkor 400mm 2.8. I am doing recently a lot on Wildlife, so only Fuji would not work for me. The Fuji 100-400mm is not bad but can't compete with these brutal lenses. BUT: for all the rest I use Fuji. Especially for landscape there is nothing what beats the Fuji GFX50s. That's how it is for me.

As a secondary point, D850 could cover most of the limitations of d810 as compared to x-t2 (except size and Evf of course). Nice video!

The lenses are killer on Fuji, even the 18-55 is brilliant in fact in some ways it's better than the 16-55 with OIS and is very compact. xt1 used is outrageous value, pair it with a couple of primes and the 18-55 and its happy days.

Very unscientific I know, but I too notice a sharpness to my X-T 1 files when compared to newer Fuji cameras. The X-T 2 has greater Resolution, however I think the sensor in the X-T 1 produces slightly better micro-contrast (or Actuance), this gives the appearance of greater image quality, which is often referred to as 'sharpness'.

Read most of the comments. I don't understand why Canikon user's freak this much about mirrorless cameras? You don't have to buy one and DSLR's will continue to exist for a long time. You also have a greatly established system, Canon and Nikon won't abandon it over time, unlike Sony. So you are not under threat. Fuji is a small segment in a HUGE market. Keep calm and move on. Continue doing what you're doing; taking great photos!

I am thinking of jumping to full frame, ie Nikon D750 or its next iteration (would love the D850 but I would need to sell a kidney). Good point on dynamic range. I find shadows extremely noisy in low light even at iso 200 on the xt2. Way worse than canon 6d. What’s worse is that the camera tends to underexpose by 2/3rd of a stop. That makes the shadow noise worse.

Kory Easterday in my experience the Fuji sensor had very noticeable noise in the shadows when shooting in relatively low light scenarios . Even at base ISO and a properly exposed image I could see noise in the shaded areas of skin.

Also i heard there is a time limit on the 4K filming is this also something you experienced? also the i heard the fuji X-H1 supersedes this on another level have you compared the two?

@FindingMiddleEarth 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have never experienced any overheating issues, even I’m not weather. To address you other question, ALL still cameras like DSLR and mirrorless have time limits on recording that limit you to 29 minutes. All except the Panasonic cameras limit you to 4 hours of recording. If you want a camera to stick on a tripod for prolonged recording, you need to look at an actual video camera like a Sony AX1000 4k camera. The X-H1 has the same time limits as the others

My goodness.... look at the bulk of those cameras!!!! Just massive!!! The entire reason I switched to Fuji was because of size and weight. I've shot with both Cannon and Nikon in the past and was always choked by the size and weight. Not only the bodies but lenses are huge too. In my opinion there is never a time, unless you are strictly shooting in a studio or out of a car, where weight doesn't matter. Ultimately, that is why Fuji has stolen so many shooters from other brands. "Professional" photographers love to "look" at their gear. They love people looking at it. The bigger and blacker it is... the better it must be? It's a strange bizare phenomenon in the camera world. That however is dramatically changing, finally. As for the image quality... Fuji is stunning... so is Nikon... and so is Cannon. Unless you are a true pixel perv you can't tell the difference with the naked eye and with all the post editing people insist in doing these days it makes any "precieved" difference a moot point. Shoot I've taken pictures with my I phone 10, had it published, and continue to have other photographers think it was taken on a full frame DSLR. Size and weight will become the dominate form factor in the next few years... wait and see. Anyway, nice 1 year review.

Have to disagree with you on 2 points here Eric.1. Firmware upgrades of Nikon D3, D3s, D4, etc. These are totally different cameras. The D4 adds extra physical attributes such as a joystick control and a higher megapixel sensor. These changes can't be made with a simple firmware upgrade, so I think it's unfair and unneccesary to bring this into a camera comparison.2. You, along with many others, claim the D500 has astounding high iso performance. It doesn't. I own it, along with D610 and a D4 and I have to say, it is the worst of the lot (as to be expected since it has a crop sensor). I will happily use the D500 up to 1600, after that, I'm uncomfortable since noise is a definite issue. Over 3200, I simply wouldn't take a picture with it unless I really, really had to (i.e. on a photo assignment with no other option available).I do like your videos Eric, I just felt I had to say something about the above.

Can't say anything about Nikon but Canon would probably charge for those updates. It's not always dials and sensors, it's about making the gear you own more valuable, more functional. Added value.

not getting rid of my Nikon D750s :) - better dynamic range - cleaner high ISO - and of course the Fuji X 50-140mm F2.8 just does not have nice enough bokeh compared to that of 70-200mm F2.8 - Tamron or Sigma or Nikon and of course still like my X-T2s - On Firmware - my take is that Fuji has more bugs then the other - and so many firmware updates are issues - yes some enhancements - but some of those enhancements should have been there all along - So I am not one to praise Fuji more then the other makers - Example - some do not like the Display on the Left - like me - So some other cameras allow you to map Display to another button - Fuji had to come out with a firmware to fix this - but they only did it for the X-T2 - not X-T1 so what ??? not listening to their customers - Likewise - my Lumix G9 does not need a battery grip to get full performance - Did you try the Nikon D850?

All Fujis X-Trans have this issue, however, the X-E3 has notably less occurrences of it from all of the reviews I've seen. They seem to be correcting for it much better on the newer model, hopefully this carries over to the X-H1.

Hi Eric. Thank you for the work you put into your helpful videos. I purchased an X-t2 but am pretty close to sending it back because I just find manual focus difficult for two reasons and was hoping that even after hours of reading and watching videos, I've just missed something and you could quickly straighten me out. Issue #1 - I have peaking turned on...so its on all the time, even in manual focus. Great as an aid to get focus, but then it's in the way of composing/evaluating the scene. Is there a way to toggle peaking on/off? Issue #2: When I use focus assist to zoom in and manual focus, as I turn the focus ring, a dark "grain often appears, which, mixed with the peaking effect just makes a huge mess and things impossible to get a clear edge to focus on. Any advice appreciated msgaltman@gmail.com

Funny it's Sigma who saying the market share of Fuji so small is the reason why they haven't make lens for it yet. And you can find EF-FX af adapter, it just it's not cheap because not much place making it as of right now. But it prove that it's possible, Fuji didn't limit anything. Maybe because people like you who like to "stick with the more open systems til fuji gets it" so that they have small market share and nobody makes lense for them

The problem I have with Sony and Fuji ergonomics is the placement of lens release button. I believe Nikon, Canon and Olympus get it right, and Sony and Fuji get it wrong. why have a lens release button in between the lens and the grip? it is the tiniest narrowest place, where if you mount large lenses, it becomes even less space. On the left, there is all that space with no grip, and it is so easy to reach the lens release button. There is nothing that interferes with it. Sony is even worse than Fuji, because Sony has a pronounced grip and beefier lenses. I wonder if once the decision was made to design the lens release on the right, it is then physically impossible to change the placement to the left.

Fujifilm changed my life. Unless you have a budget for full frame Canon or Nikon and a real need for full frame, go with Fuji. Canon, Nikon, and Sony all treat their APS-C cameras like toys for basic consumers, and most of the good lenses are designed for full frame only. Fujifilm is the only one dedicated to professional quality with the APS-C format.
