Just received my x-t2 this week, my first mirrorles camera, and have to say I'm really impressed with the build and features. However, I needed as much information as possible to get to grips with it's many features and settings and have to say your very informative and professional presentation is the best I've seen so far. I guess I'll have to re-watch several times to follow bit by bit, as there's just so much to take in in one go. Many thanks for your efforts and for sharing 👌

Hello Maarten, I have this camera for over a month now (with the 18-135) and I really enjoy using it, especially having the main controls on top and not having to go into the menus is great for an old film shooter like me. I learned a lot from this video, I feel more comfortable now going “deep” into the menus and taking advantage of all the possible settings. I was going to say thanks a million for sharing, but this one is more like two million. Keep up the great work.

Wow! Another great presentation, Martin. A seamless delivery, a friendly tone, and non-stop information by the boatload. Fuji has come a long way in a few years. I love the X-T2, apart from putting on the lens cap to the 16-55. Impressed by the new X-TH, but too big and bulky, and will probably settle on the e3 for a streetwise companion to my T2.

At long last, Mr Maarten!!! You are a gentleman, 4th of May you told me, 4th of May you delivered. This is not just a review of the XT-2, but a seminar of this beautiful camera. And unfortunately (or fortunately) it proves to me how much I have to learn... I am kind of dazzled of all this information and I am sure it needs multiple viewings in order to "get" all this. Thank you for taking your time to give us such a thorough review and such useful information and advice. Please mention to fuji guys the problem with the "freezing", (I have contacted the local Fuji and they are aware of it) well not exactly a problem but it happened,I know other owners of the camera have/had it... Other than that I honestly LOVE this camera... At this time and age,It is not easy, but please try to stay honest and true as you are. Thank you Mr Maarten.

The overload problem can increase when choosing which of Maarten's reviews to bookmark, also in a good way. On the downside, watching too many might cause a muddle in understanding what features are on which camera. On the (very) upside, it's possible to gradually understand more and more of your body's features, as well as get glimpses of what you don't have, and whether it'll matter. i find myself watching these and then picking the Fuji manual up after saying "Ahhh, right" after seeing new items of interest. It's like watching entertaining learning tools that masquerade as reviews!

Cheers Maarten - great stuff. I'm very happy with my switch from Nikon D810's to the XT2's, but I will say, that IMHO, the sensor could be a bit better on the Fuji and I wish it had lower native ISO like the Nikons. The lenses make the strongest case for the switch and the 16, 56 and 90 are all brilliant.

Great review. For quick access to format a card, on the X100F I press and hold the delete button for three seconds and then press the rear command dial. The camera then asks if I want to format the card. I don't know if that also works on the X T2. I also wish I could put Format Card in the MY menu. Fuji offers a lot of value for the price charged imo.

A very good review of what is the current "camera of the moment". As a matter of interest, I am very interested as to how this camera compares to the best of the APS-C sensor DSLR cameras. I have watched a few video comparisons (by other KZfaqrs) between the Nikon D500 vs Fuji XT2. I am not 100% sure of the conclusions reached. I would be very interested to see a Nikon D500 vs Fuji XT2 video by your good self ??

That would be interesting, I'll see what I can do. Personally, I would say it comes to personal preference - and I probably would fall on the X-T2 side for mirrorless reasons. I did like the D500 though.

Excellent review. It's definitely swayed me to consider the xt2 as my first mirrorless. This may be an odd question, but how is the instruction manual that comes with the camera? I like to have good written instructions with me as I'm learning. Thank you so much for this review.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. The instruction manual is good and more extensive than most - but what it is lacking is any note about the exclusions, so that when a feature isn't available or isn't working, there's no way to tell which other setting(s) may be in the way. It's also (like all manuals) a little dry, so it makes good bed-time reading and there are times when it explains too much, and other times, too little.

Hi Maarten, excellent review, as always, you've got some of the best. I'm a hobby shooter mostly travel stuff but some landscape and and natural life too. I'm choosing between the Sony a7ii currently $1600 with kit lens and the Fuji x T2 currently $2400 with kit lens. There's lots I like about the Fuji but the Sony eeks out slightly better image quality (I think), but I wonder if it handles and shoots as well as the Fuji - particularly the AF? I like to print some of my pics up to 30 by 40. Which camera would you lean toward with these parameters? I shoot currently with a Canon rebel and a Sony Nex7. I travel with the nex7 due to size but don't really like the camera.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
The A7II does not have Sony's latest focus improvements, and although I haven't shot with them side by side, my memory says they're about the same. Fuji's focus modes are slightly easier to handle - I find selecting the right mode on Sony slightly complicated. You should not have any issue with large prints with either of these cameras. My preference leans toward Fuji, as I like the physical controls - and on the X-T2, particularly the drive mode and exposure meter mode collars - that makes those settings easier to access and use. Hope this helps.

Hello Maarten, I hope you'll excuse me if i share my story with you. The last camera i truly loved was a Canon A1. I parted from serious photography about 30 years ago. I've now retired and my interest has been revived. Linked with a passion for fungi, mosses and similar - macro photography is the key. I wondered what manufacturer to buy into: Canon? Nikon? Sony? Panasonic? I chose a Fuji x-T2 (used, affordable) because of the excellent sensor and the sensible "photographic" controls. My purchase arrived today. I love the camera. But, I'm on a learning curve about controlling the many variables that will allow me to get the best out of my photography. The X-T2 so much more sophisticated than my A1 ! I'll come to the point of my message. I've really appreciated your presentations. The preparation, thought, time and effort that you have taken all shine through, and have been an enormous assistance to me in finding my feet and familiarity with my "new love". I'll finish by simply extending a sincere "Thank you". I wish you well with your own journey through the lens. Best wishes. Phillip

The fact that custom settings can't be retrieved in video mode is maddening. There are quite a few parameters that need to be changed for video, and one quick visit to the custom settings would be so helpful! I can even dream of a world in which turning the drive control to video automatically calls up pre-defined video settings. Maybe in firmware 8.5 ...

Can the X-T2 shoot in elc shutter and still flash sync at high shutter speeds like many of the older X Fuji cameras ?. Like a shutter speed of 3000 and your off camera flash will still work without needing to be in a HSS flash mode. I had the Fuji X100T for a short time and i was able to do this for bright sunlight day shooting it worked fantastically to knock down the sun with out killing my flash as it was not in HSS. Thanks

Maarten I know you had or have the A6000 and at the end of the day it isn't about the equipment but I'll likely be buying into my last camera system and can't seem to choose between the A6500 and the Fuji XT2 . I've read your comments in the past that the LR issues with the X trans hasn't bothered you much and you don't consider lack of IBIS a deal breaker . I'll be dragging this new camera in a waterproof waist pack as I flyfish my way into retirement and knowing you have extensive experience with both systems and the wisdom of job I wondered if you had feelings one way or another . What a pleasure to read your kind words. First, remove the focus from the shutter: Button/Dial setting page 2 - shutter AF (just AF-S usually) to off. Hi Maarten, thanks for the great review, i make low cost Real Estate Video Walkthrough and we currently use the Lumix G5 that is an old camera. And now in 2017 we want to use a better camera to improve the image quality of our Real Estate Videos and I am undecided between the Panasonic GH5 and the Fujifilm X-T2. Which camera do you think that is better between the new GH5 and the Fuji XT-2 for the type of videos that we do. One important factor to me is that i need to spend the less amount of time possible doing Color Correction, Is true that the video footage from the XT-2 require less time in the computer doing color correction than the GH5 video footage ?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, thanks.Not entirely sure what you find dis-satisfying about your current system - what is it that you're missing and you're hoping to improve? I'd suggest that real estate likely requires a wide angle, and switching systems might mean you'll need to purchase the right wide-angle lens for x-mount. If you're shooting handheld, you might prefer the stabilization of the GH5, but otherwise I prefer the X-T2 - I find it easier to manage. I'm not sure if colour correction would be less - that depends on the settings you're using to shoot. My guidance would be to create the look in camera, to the extent that's possible - and I would find both equally flexible in that regard.

How does it compare to Fuji EF-500 and Nissin i60a (compatibility and functionality wise) ? It is certainly MUCH mre affordable than either Fuji or Nissin flash. Thanks for another great review Marten. what program do you use to render the fuji raw files? I use Lightroom and it doesn't do as well as with my Canon files. I was thinking about switching to Fuji for the size and ergonomics. But after reading about issues rendering the RAW files, I am considering abandoning Fuji. I thought I might just need better glass, but after reading others comments, I believe there is not a software that manages Fuji Raw the way Lightroom handles Canon and Nikon files. Any help would be appreciated.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
I found your question difficult to answer. I've read those comments too - that Fuji and Lightroom don't get along well - but they mostly date from 2016, maybe that's no longer a current issue. I haven't found problems in my experience, but again, I may not have looked carefully enough to notice the deficiencies that others reported. And, I find I don't use Lightroom adjustments much, as for 90% of the images, I'm very happy with Fuji's jpegs - that's unusual, I'm nearly always tweaking other brands. So, I'm sorry, I can't offer any guidance or alternatives.

Hi Mr Maarten, I hope you are well. I would like to ask you something on the video side of the Xt-2... Last couple of times that I shot video on the camera for professional reasons and particularly in baptises, I noticed that (in both videos) the father of the child being baptised just happened to wear a shirt in one plain color in one case was blue in the other pink, now in both cases there were times that I noticed on the video (while I was recording and on video taken and checking it later on) that at some very small areas of the fabric and where it seemed to bend there was somekind of "distorting" effect like the fabric at that place came alive and moved... not creating any problem but noticeable. Could you please tell me... have you noticed anything like this and is this something that can happen in certain circumstances (like the lines we were talking the other time in the photo side of the camera under certain kind of light)? I do hope that my question makes sense and thank you so much for being so kind and patient with my queries.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Is the problem moiré, caused by a fine pattern in the fabric? You might be able to reduce this by turning down the sharpening. Is it evident on all monitors? You might find that if you've recorded in 4K, down-razzing to HD eliminates the effect, or that it's just visible on some screens. Hope this helps.
@beltenebrosgr1904
@beltenebrosgr1904 6 жыл бұрын
It is moire Mr Maarten, forgive my ignorance... shooting for years on video cameras I do not remember to notice moire or if I did it was nothing memorable... now, it does not seem that of a problem but I did notice it when I checked on the computer monitor what I had shot. To record in 4k is something I can not do right now for "practical reasons"... but i will check turning down sharpening, on the other hand won' t that affect the photos of the camera? Mr Maarten, something more...do you use final cut, premiere or another editting program for your videos and do you believe that there are any true differences on them or the "tool" matters not only creativily matters? I want to go to editting and I need to invest in a new pc so any advice would be welcome...

Hi Mr Maarten, hope you are well and hopefully you DID NOT miss my questions... but here is one. I shot a video at 1080p/25 with your recomendations, everything great... I used the grip with three batteries fully charged and when the first battery exhausted I did experience the sudden stop of recording, annoying thing... Now my question is this, I used an Extreme Pro SanDisk 64gb 280mb/s, suitable for video, when I was in "film" mode to the top of the screen right next to where it shows your choice of recording, {mine was FHD 25 as I said} it also shows the number 78m42s which in my understanding indicates the recording time that the card is able to record in total at you current choice (of film mode}. Strange part is that, I shot around 2 hours which is 46,4gb from 58,88 (that is what I just checked in the sandisk card on my computer). I really have no idea how that can happen, is it not true the total number of minutes 78m42s that is on LCD display? What is going on? Am I missing something? When I put the card back on camera it has on display 16m33s, the time that is left to shoot so that the card is full. I honestly have no idea what is going on here, as far as I can say I miss no footage and I even counted the minutes of each "part" of video recording, almost all of them are in chunks of 5m+ each and in total around 120 minutes. Could you please tell me if you have any idea what am I missing here? As always thank you for your time.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
The X-T2 uses variable bit rate recording, and the actual usage, particularly with static scenes, can be less than the estimate (which is the "worst-case" scenario) on screen. It updates only when you stop recording. Hope this helps.

Thank you Mr Maarten, what you say it does help, but is it not too big of a time difference to see 78m on display and actually record around 120m and still have room for more. I mean this is a good thing, don' t take me wrong, but... still does it make sense to be so off on estimate of time. Is this something that happens to other cameras too, I mean the estimate of time being so "off"?

good review however I was going to buy this camera until I stumbled on the "grid artifact" problem. this is a deal breaker for me. I'm now looking at the Sony cameras

Thanks for the kind words. That is a little bit of an edge case though ...

Maybe I am a little dumb, impatient, or both! Could someone please tell me at what point of this video ( time duration wise), there is a simple explanation of how to set the XT2 in basic aperture priority mode- I shoot in this mode 90% + of the time, and have No interest in video. Thanks in advance.

This video is not a tutorial, although I appreciate that my in-depth reviews do sometimes provide enough detail that some consider them helpful in that regard. To that end, there is no section where there is a simple explanation of how to accomplish any text. To answer your question, turn the shutter dial and ISO dials to A. Then set the aperture to your preferred setting. On this non-PASM camera, that is the equivalent of aperture priority mode. Hope this helps.
