Fuji XT5 review: a strange & cinematic camera

The Fuji XT5 is here, and it's not what I was expecting. A couple years ago when the Fuji XT4 came out, I fell head over heels and even started an online movement called "Fuji Juice." Since then, folks from around the globe have joined hands in a celebration of the juice, but does the XT5 deserve the same praise as it's older brothers and sisters?

I think it’s a good new entry point into the system. I can see long-time X-T3 users being tempted. Battery life and IBIS are pretty big deals. Doesn’t make me want to ditch my 4. Seems pretty clear at this point that if you want the biggest leap in performance within the X system, the S is the one to get.

totally get it...Man I bought an H2S for a shooting and yeah it's great, but also..yeah I sent it back right after it,,,and guess what...I STILL WORK WITH TWO TRUSTY RUSTY KICKASS XT3 ... What Fujifilm should give us is a real cinema cam, then I'd jump in and swim in the FujiJuice until there is a drop / Thanks for making this youtube a better place with your humor

Does the skin smoothing mode under the dynamic range work in video or just on stills?

I have a question: I record lengthy nature scenes (birds, squirrels etc) and need a camera that will record continuously for several hours. I currently use the Sony A6400 which will record for 10 hours straight on a 256GB Card and on A/C power. I would prefer to use my Fujifilm XT2 with unlimited A/C power via the battery grip, as it’s got much better quality but the video time limits make it impractical to press record every 30 minutes. I’ve heard that the XT5 has no video recording time limits (until battery exhausts or memory card fills up) but has no power grip to plug in a/c power. Can the xt5 connect to A/C power, enabling several continuous hours of recording footage? If not, can you recommend a camera (preferably from the fujifilm family) that can? Thank you.

I hope you can help me bro, I own a xh2s but I looove the desing of the xt5 plus I like 40pmx, I just dont wanna feel a big downgrade in video, do you think the xh2s has more "cinematic look soft video" straight out of camera, or its the same??

Love the storytelling.. my poor short attention span almost made me click out to find another X-T5 video but your sense of humor and great story structure (for the lack of better wording) kept me engaged and made me feel like I'd miss out on the rest of an entire cohesive piece by clicking out.

I agree that I wish it had a tilt screen. I get why it doesn’t - it needs to differentiate from the X-H2 but… it would be like the absolute perfect camera FOR ME specifically if it had a flip. Great vid as always!

It did make me sad when they removed the flip screen :( but I hope everyone else does adopt that A7RV screen, that is so revolutionary and flexible for everyone

I’ve always been pretty unhappy with the audio preamps in my FujiFilm cameras. I agree, they are pretty noisy.

They send you a dongle for your headphones. So that was nice of them. And today I shot about 100 photos and 5 min worth of video and used a whole battery. I was shocked because I heard good things about the battery.

I love my XT3 but, I want to upgrade to the Xh2 for the IBIS and flip out screen and better auto focus. Zach have you tried the xh2? NOT the S

I tell you what the xh2s AF is much much better than the xt4 which I own both. The fringer is great with SOME lenses and not so great with others. I can say with NATIVE lenses the new fuji processors are WAY better and the eye tracking is way more sticky. For anyone considering the xh2s for video I can tell you that it stands in a class of its own. A stacked sensor at $2500 is unbelievable….. 14bit readout at 30fps is only something you see on high end cinema cameras. Turn the NR down and let davinci handle noise and you’ll get 14+ stops of REAL dynamic range across the board as tested by Gerald Undone.

Would love to see you do a similar project with the XH2s and see if that fixes some of the issues you have with the xt5? Either way I don’t think the XT5 will be replacing my XT4.

@@ZachMayfield It would be cool to see what you do with it. The S5 ii looks interesting. I don’t want to leave the Fuji ecosystem but if I did, this is probably what I’d get. The AF finally seems decent.

Minority here but I wish it had the flip screen too. Just love the fuji dials and the xh2 doesn’t have those.

Zach, thanks for the video - I've been searching for something that highlights the XT5's video capabilities, and I couldn't find anything to satisfy the itch - until now. Is it just my eye or does the image quality from the XT5 lack some of the character in XT4? It's pretty disappointing to me that they moved all the good stuff to the XH2s - no interest to buy into that price range. Looks like they borrowed the cripple hammer from Canon for the XT5...

Get a brand new xh2s from eBay for $2000 that’s what I did. It’s gray market but I got a 3 year accidental warranty for an extra $150… I love how the xt5 looks though, my wife uses a xt4 and I get jealous every time I see it (it’s silver too)

Considering it costs exactly the same as the X-T4 and is better in almost every aspect, saying that it got the cripple hammer is simply not managing your expectations. *It's technically cheaper than the X-T4 if you factor in inflation* All the nice stuff that the X-H2S provides is clearly worth far more than the selling price of the X-T4. Your only other competitor in this price bracket is the new S5ii or A7iv. Just remember that the X-H2S has more dynamic range than the R5C, S5ii by about 1 stop or more. So I'm not sure where the "cripple hammer" hit.

I don't need or want a flippin' screen....I like to go full tilt....love my X-T3, although I have to say the Sony A7R5 screen is great giving one the best of both worlds.

So let me get this right. You bought a purpose built photography camera for the challenge of making a film on a photography camera, then complained that said photography camera doesn't have a videography screen and should be changed to be more like the videography camera that already exists but you didn't buy?

@@ZachMayfield I understand not liking the screen. That makes perfect sense, it's not good for video and you make videos. But suggesting Fuji not put photography screens on a photography focused camera anymore because you make videos is the part I struggle with. Especially when they already essentially make the camera you want. It would be a more useful suggestion back when the it looked like the XT line was going to be both the flagship camera and the hybrid camera with the X-T4. But now that they clearly have the hybrid cameras in the XH series and the photography cameras in the XT line. It comes off to me like you're implying that every camera Fuji makes needs to be useful to you. I think that we can all agree that this whole screen debate needs to stop. It's okay for cameras to exist which won't work for you, or the way that you shoot. We intrinsically accept that with just about every other camera function but for some reason not with screens. I prefer DSLR-style controls. Others prefer Fuji-dials. But no one in either camp is calling the the extinction of the other. It's very bizarre.

@@bardofhighrenown Actually we should stop classifying screens as photography and videography oriented ones. It really depends on use case. If I'm shooting things like events or weddings where I'm always behind the camera, I much prefer having a tilt screen like the X-T3/5. It doesn't get in the way of cables when rigged up, and will not have the potential to break. I find the flippy screen far superior for photography than it is for video. Would be nice if one day we can all have the A7R5/GH6 styled screen but in a slimmer package.

Fuji: I want a camera with the size of a x-t5 (not much bigger), with 40 mpix, flipscreen, excellent autofocus, great stabilization + global shutter. Can you fixed that?

I returned my X-H2, my X-T3 files were sharper and the colors nicer. Not sure where the 40 megapixels were…. I’m used to shooting high megapixel cameras so that’s not the cause of the issues. It also froze up on me constantly. So, I bought the X-T4 instead to be my second body, love it!

@@Eyeofkamau yeah, not my experience at all. In fact, I returned the first one I purchased thinking maybe it was just a faulty one, but the replacement did exactly the same thing. I even used Delkin black cards, native lens and batteries so I have no clue what the issue was.

It really bums me out that Fuji keeps using these cheap mic pre amps in their cameras. I know external audio is almost always better, but I wish the internal pre-amps on fujifilm cameras had a half decent noise floor.

Thank you for validating my frustration with the auto-focus haha. I have an XT3 and despite that and very small things I'm very in love with it. The cam-remote Fuji has is nice but man, that flip-screen would make it the perfect camera. 🥲
