I have owned multiple Canon cameras over the last three decades and all under $1000 and I had been shooting pretty much in an amateur ways all the way, but now that I wanted to invest four times as much I needed to be sure, six months of search and and reading all kind of reviews finally landed me on a X-T4, and by watching this guy it made me so proud of my decision, it is truly a gem, they have packaged up a lot of goodies in a small package and offering it at a much lower price than others. And this guy really knows his stuff, cheers

Thanks for this. I tried a focus stack recently on my tripod with OIS left on (XT3 + 10-24mm) My eye sight is not great in the field so did not check but when I uploaded, none of them looked very sharp. Have been out after watching this video and much better results with OIS turn off.

This is a rare channel. Actually useful and realistic. Most channels that mention Fuji are either bashing it to protect their known sponsors in the price sensitive segment this camera competes in, or trying to convince us there is something magical about Fuji using nonsense only idiots would buy.

Chris, your vids are an incredible asset to the community at large. Thanks for your efforts. As fate would have it, I was battling OIS myself this week. I think this discussion needs a little clarification (see this video around the 6 min mark) that I was under unaware of until two days ago...and so are MANY others; Pressing the shutter halfway to engage OIS ONLY works in AF-C, NOT AF-S (with IS Mode to Shooting Only). This can be a big issues since at longer focal lengths, OIS may be necessary to help compose in the first place. This is unlike every other camera system I can think of. To get the OIS to engage with shutter button halfway down, you have to go to AF-C. In fact, this is hinted at on page 136 of the manual, but I glossed right over it initially. This really can matter too. In AF-S, the OIS engages just before shutter actuation, and its effects are not visible to the maker. Anyway, try it for yourself. Let me know if I'm missing something. Keep up the good work.

Great video, as usual, brother! I think young photographers should travel back in time to the 70’s or just the 80’s and use tripods of those years. They will find today tripods are feathers and will never leave them behind again. I’ve heard many kids complaining about 5-8 pound tripods or about spending $300 more to shred 1 or 2 pounds of weight to then slap a brick of a head on top of the tripod! Absurd 😂🤣😂🤣😂. Great teachings, thank you for all you do for us!

Reciprocal rule comes from age of film. Digital sensors are sharper now than 35mm film was. So the old rule is actually too optimistic and stabilisation more critical than people realise to get images that are sharp at 100%.

Usually I always have a tripod with me. When not needed for camera stabilization, it is useful to thoughtfully frame the shot. Besides that, I am always fascinated about the OIS an open aperture abilities the XF50-140 offers for usage without a tripod in twilight conditions. :)

Gonna also point out that at least on the 50-140, leaving IS on at shutter speeds at 1/1000th of a second or faster, the system actually somehow adds some weird blur on parts of the image.

Intersting video, sadly the "rule" doesn't work anymore with high density sensors.. Now it's suggested to use 1/ "double the Focal lenght" at least, but the real equivalent focal lenght so 1/75mm*2 in this case. :) (and a Fuji 26mp sensor is dense and comparable to the Big Mpix full frame about microshake). I Still find sometimes weird behaviour in a burst with fixed focus, some shots are little soft because of the stabilization in the middle of a burst (X-H1, mostly IBIS only). The only thing I really miss is an option to engage the OIS only when the shutter speed goes under the specific value for your lens, but nobody did it.

I wonder if all this image stabilization is making cameras and lenses more vulnerable. After all, there are now many moving parts in the camera body or in the lens, and I would be really interested to know whether everything still works as well after five or six years as it did at the time of purchase. And by the way, I really like your videos! Look forward to each new one!

An interesting future video (at least to me) might be some testing to see if/when having IBIS/OIS on when on a tripod actually matters. (I saw a video a while back for a different camera brand -- don't remember which -- where the vlogger didn't see any negative impacts.)
@charlescecil7213
@charlescecil7213 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pal2Tech and thanks for the useful video. You say that image stabilization should be turned off when on a tripod; leaving it on could even introduce vibration. The owner's manual that comes with my Fujinon 10-24 OIS lens says "Because image stabilization is also effective in reducing blur caused by the motion of the mechanical shutter we recommend that you enable optical image stabilization even when using a tripod." This 10-24 lens has no ON-OFF button for OIS. You can only turn it off via the body's menu. Contrary to that, the owner's manual for my 50-140 OIS lens has no such statement about tripod use. How to reconcile these two manuals? I also notice that if I set my 50-140 OIS to the OFF position the X-T4 menu control for the IS mode is grayed out, i.e., the IS mode is off. (I see no menu option for IBIS that would allow me to turn it on or off. So is IBIS still really on? Also, if the 50-140 OIS is ON then the body menu does not offer an OFF option, only a choice between Continuous and Shooting Only. I'm confused. Should we ignore the 10-24 manual's advice and turn off image stabilization when using this lens on a tripod? And the 50-140? Thanks for clarification. Chuck
@voltigore
@voltigore 3 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that IBIS is consuming energy even when it's off. The electromagnets are working hard to keep that sensor centered without moving! There us NO hardware fixture that pins the sensor in place when you turn off IBIS. So there is no BIG difference between Continuous and Shooting only.

One significant omission is an explanation of how the Fuji IBIS deals with panning to capture movement. I photograph prop aircraft at low altitude at 1/60th sec shutter speed with my X-T3. The requirement is to disable IBIS in the panning axis while leaving the other axes on. Is there a setting in the XT-4 menus to do this or, possibly is the panning motion automatically detected? Olympus cameras have such a feature but I don't want to abandon Fuji for this feature.

I was working with a tripod and when I went check out my sd card in my computer I find a lot of parts of my images with wobbly, anyone here had the same problem? I was recording a video in 4k 30fps. The other problem that I had was, the autofocus, hunting several times, I made some adjustment, but, when has a lot of faces in front the camera, the autofocus starts to hunting a lot of faces, maybe the solution is use MF? Thanks a lot for your content Pal, it's really helpful.

The IS of my X-H1 is better than in my Nikon Z6 - especially in video. Can shoot 1/2 handheld. Very useful for waterfalls when I'm out without tripod. Of course that's because of the smaller sensor in the X-H1. But Z6 is the better camera and gives better image quality.
