With the X-E4 coming in at more than $1000 less than the X-Pro3, I was wondering if the X-Pro3 was worth the upgrade or if you'd be better off buying the X-E4 and upgrading or expanding your lens kit. So I asked my friend Tyler Trudeau to bring his X-Pro3 and join me for a photo walk to compare the two cameras and get a feel for what the best route to go is.

The X-E4 has a very nostalgic look to it harkening back to an old rangefinder-esque camera (kinda reminds me a little of the Pen F). I really dig the size, especially for travel or street photos. It's just a shame that I just bought an X-T4 about a month ago. Great vid. Love the pics.

@@benjhaisch it has it's pros and cons. I love the IBIS, bigger battery, and fully articulating touch screen. But when I use it just for photos, I'll leave the back screen flipped closed so I don't chimp. But what really get my juices flowing is trying some film simulation recipes from Fuji X Weekly. I never thought JPEGs would be so much fun to shoot.

As someone who's looking to get into Fujifilm system after 10 years or so of shooting film and film only, here's my thought. I'm getting the XE-4. It's not expensive as XT-4 and X-Pro 3, has classic design which XS-10 doesn't have, and I can change lenses which I can't do on X-100V. Yes, you could say XE-4 doesn't have IBIS or better build quality but I have learn to live without those in my film bodies. It's good to have, but not necessary to take a photograph. In short, it has all the good stuff you need with none of the tedium.

My X-Pro3 is being evaluated for trade, as I was thinking about getting the X-E4 to save a bit of money. I’ve got the X-T3 (primarily for landscapes), so this would be my 2nd body (walkabout, events, and portraits), as well as a backup. This was a great video. To me the major difference is feel/controls vs. size/weight. Still torn!

Interesting video! The X-E4 seems like a great performer, i really like the boxy design. 🤩 Can't say I agree about the X-Pro3 and pro work though. I use the X-Pro3 for documentary style weddings and events, and I love the flip down screen. I don't have the time or need to chimp after each shot anyway, so I don't need the screen facing out all the time. 😊 I really (really) don't want a fully articulating screen on the X-Pro series though. In my opinion they are the worst screens for stills photography. They are slower to flip around and they stick out on the side making the camera almost twice as wide when they're used for shooting low etc. I much prefer the flip down screen. Funny thing is, I shoot from the screen a lot more with my X-Pro3s than with any of my other cameras. It's so quick, just flip down to use it, and flip up to use the EVF. Simple and intuitive, not need to push any buttons or rely on an eye sensor. I realize the flip down screen is not to everybody's taste, but in my opinion this type of screen is perfect for the X-Pro series. 😊

This is fascinating. I have not use the XPRO but I have a feeling the flip down screen would in fact be easier than many other screen designs. I’m trying to decide if I’m going to buy an XPRO for my professional portrait work, and I think it may me my next purchase. I love my X100 and XT3, but the XPRO is just calling to me. I find the rangefinder style really helps with the intimacy of portraits, allows me to keep an eye on the subject and gets out of the way faster than bigger cameras. It’s just so minimal and lovely to work with. I’m trying to decide between an XPRO and an XE4 and whether to keep the XT3 in the mix or just go all rangefinder style. It’s a hard choice.

I never thought I would consider anything but the fastes lenses but I found myself very interested in the compact prime line. Being able to bring two lenses because it's lighter and more compact is nicer than having f1.4 on just one lens. But then again I don't really like switching lenses all the time so I will need to buy the X-E4 :P to go alongside my still awesome X-T1.

Does the X-E4 store the exposure compensation and white balance colour shift values in the custom slots? If so, can you store two different custom colour shift settings when using the same white balance for each of the two custom slots? The X-E3 can't do it.

This is an awesome comparison! I’d love to pick your brain on the following… I’m having a hard time with deciding on a new Fuji body, struggling with GAS, but also feeling like I want a new and/or third body. Right now I’m shooting on an XT3 and an X100V. Love both. I shoot studio portraits and headshots, personal branding photos and the occasional family session. I used to shoot engagements and weddings, but now it’s almost entirely portrait work. I have fallen in love with the rangefinder style of the X100V, and I am eyeing the XPRO 3. I’m having a hard time deciding if I should sell my XT3, and get an XPRO 3, keep the XT3 and get an XE4, or just wait and save for the XPRO3 and have three cameras (XT3, XPRO & X100). I’ve also considered the XT4, but I don’t do video, don’t care about IBIS and I just don’t see the upgrade. I like to work very minimalist, and I only have a handful of lenses. I would love your thoughts as to what you would do in my shoes. I think I’m also feeling kind of burnt out and bored and there’s something about the x100 that just makes me want to shoot more, which is why I’m leaning towards the rangefinder minimalism found in the XE4 and XPRO series. I want the camera to get out of my way, and my work is about connection, simplicity and closeness. Even in the studio, I keep one eye open. I am finding myself shooting in studio with the X100! Would you sell the XT3 and get the XPRO, keep it and go XE4, or just wait and save and get the XPRO as a third? I think there is some piece of me that’s just scared of going entirely rangefinder, considering I’m doing studio for portraits… But maybe that’s just a simple learning curve. And if I sell my XT3 I could probably afford to get another lens, although I’m pretty happy with my combination of 23, 35 and 56.

The viewfinder alone on the X-Pro3 is worth the additional cost. I love my X-E3, but the viewfinder is just crap. The X-E4 makes no sense to me... same crappy viewfinder and just a small upgrade in the sensor. It’s also difficult to grip without $170 worth of accessories. The ergonomics of the X-E3 is so much better....grip, button layout,.....you can find a new X-E3 for almost half the cost of the X-E4.

Agreed. The 4 just seems silly, style over substance. And with the 27 and $170 accessories its nearly as much as an X100V, which has way better features. I was hoping the 4 would have been $1200 and back like the XE2, possibly with a better grip like the X Pro.

How is the feeling of the shutter button of the pro3? I have an x-e3 and a x-t1. Both of them do not have good shutter buttons. Especially on my x-e3 the shutter button is vague, sometimes it even gets stuck a little. I am looking for something that feels better and I would eventually spend more on the same image quality just for having a better tactile experience. Did you feel any difference between the x-e4 and the pro3 concerning the shutter button?
@serr

I know this was directed at Benji, but I just got the xe4 in the mail and have an xpro-3. I don’t really know how to describe it but the shutter is different. The one on the xpro3 is definitely much more tactile and feels a lot more solid of a click. The xe4 shutter button feels and sounds a little softer, but honestly not a crazy difference. Hope that helps.

This is the video I have been looking for since XE4 was announced. Thanks for the video. Coming from EOS v1 and EOS 5d to XE1, I think I can live with ergo stuff (XE1 is terrible compared to EOS TBH, but I can manage to take lots of pictures with it so...). I don't need dual card slot nor I don't use much of the buttons with XE1 anyway, so I am considering going with XE4, although I have been wanting XPro-3 since it was released. Only downside of XE4 is EVF, especially it is worse than XE1, but maybe I can live with it as well. As you said, I would rather spend extra $ on lens (coming from film-era, we had been saying to buy more lens instead of spending more money on the body).
@richardhale9664
@richardhale9664 3 жыл бұрын
I guess you are concerned about the cost of these cameras, as one should be. Just get a XE3 or if you need flexible screen an XT20/30 or XS10. The XE3 is a better overall camera than the XE4 due to better body design and additional dials and buttons, AND it is considerably cheaper. I own the XE3 and it is ideal for small light lenses (the 27mm is a perfect match) but quickly loses balance and grip once even slightly larger lenses are used (even my XF 35mm f2 begins to make the handling less than secure though the lighter and cheaper XC version should be fine), the XE4 with its smooth profile will be even worse. If you are going to use zoom, big ultra wide or telephoto lenses I would not use consider the XPro or XE lines at all but go for an XT or XS line camera. TBH if you are looking for a camera for a small lens collection a used XT2 ,XT3, XH1 or even a new XT3 will be a better choice and at the same cost or less. The Xpro line (I used to have an XPro1) are very nice to own and use, but the overall versatility is less and they are essentially feelgood prestige items (nothing wrong with that if you can afford it) and one is likely to want a second body of some sort at some point (I am still using an XT1 for larger lenses and manual focus lenses). The XT1,2,3,4 and XH1 cameras all have better EVFs than your XE1 and the XT1 body is barely any larger than the XE1. The EVFs are all better in size terms than the XPro 3 EVF and the XT3,4 and XH1 are equal in resolution. The XT1,2,3,4 and XH1 also offer a battery grip option which adds to the flexibility and handling of those cameras. Hope this helps.
@FelixLim
@FelixLim 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardhale9664 I am not concerned about the cost at all but what I am getting out of it. I don't buy stuffs just because I can afford them. That is the same reason I am not buying Leica although I can easily afford one. I didn't buy xe3 back then so there is no reason for me to even consider it now. I want RF style so XT/XS are out. Xe4 has worse evf but because of the articulating screen, I can compromise to use lcd more often. See, I don't really care of things people complain about the camera - buttons, ergo, lens combination, etc. I don't use most of xe1 buttons anyway, so it doesn't bother me at all. If ergo was a concern, I would have never joined fuji but stick with EOS FF cameras that I had been using for 20 years. :) Thanks for sharing your thought. PS: I am using 50-140 with my Xe1 just fine as well as 70-200 on Canon body (even on cheaper and much lighter film body in early 2000). Personally I don't get why people are complaining about the balance because we are supposed to hold lens with left hand, I think.

Great video as usual Benj. Something I was curious about was the general build quality of the XE-4. I think Fuji had some QA issues with the XE-3 and mine in particular has a horrible shutter button and on/off switch. They’re plastic, loose and wobble a bit. Plus the shutter button is spongy and make a weird ‘scraping’ sound when pressing. It really detracts from the experience of the camera which is otherwise great. Any thoughts on the general build quality/feeing of the X-E4?

@@benjhaisch I don't know if Fuji has to pay royalties on that design to canon but to me I am glad their pro cameras don't have that flip out design. @Benj Haisch How do you guys focus? AF recompose or BB focusing? On my X-E2s I am in M focus mode using BB focus 90% of the time and sometimes I switch to AF then (and when shooting street I often need to do it very quickly). While I really hate that the M/C/S switch is gone (and also not having any programmable button to additionally switch face/eye detection on/off quickly) I maybe can live using the Q menu for that. But what I really wonder is how the ergonomics of the joystick and AFL button (for BB focusing) are. I do move/resize the focus point quite a lot. Any experience on that with the X-E4 (or just using center AF w. recompose)?
@fredbloggs545

On my X-E3 I use the joystick to move the AF point, quick and easy. The centre areas of the screen phase points cover much of what I need, but the X-E4 covers most of the screen so is far better. With the speed I can switch between all those AF points, BB focus is largely redundant to me.

I wish the XE4 was more like a mini X Pro, like the first two were. The ergonomics look terrible compared to the XE2 and even XE3. But more than double the price and 133g more is a bit much for the X Pro. If only there was a middle ground. I know I wouldn't enjoy the XE4. I think I will have to look out for a deal for the X Pro and replace my XE3, then keep the XE2 when weight needs to be less, like when using a heavier lens. Could switch from the 23mm f2 to the 27mm II for a bit of weight improvement. I dunno, if the X Pro was 400g and $1400 I would be all over it. But its nearly 500g and $1800. Its a camera to keep for many years, so needs to be right. The XE line is dead to me. May as well accept that and move on. Maybe compromise with the X100V.

Fujifilm was chasing the “Leica look” when it styled the new X-E4. Control dials and buttons were sacrificed to achieve this and the result is a compromised product. Photographers seeking the maximum in usability would be better served by the X-Pro 3 or the X-T4/X-T3, in my opinion.

@@youngalwyn1124 I ended up with a Sony A6000 instead. Better sharpness in Lightroom for RAW, nice grip, better EVF eye-relief, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 already available. Going to upgrade to the pretty old A6400 (or A6100) soon to enjoy it's superior autofocus to the XE4. The XE2 is just an occasional retro camera now with the 27mm or manual lenses. Fuji is style over substance for those of us who can't use 17mm eye relief EVFs and central EVFs. The more premium left EVF Fuji's have even less than 17mm.

If you go to DP review and compare the X-E1 to the X-E3 you find the image quality is almost the same. In fact almost all fuji cameras has the same image quality. The X-T2 and 3 has the same IQ but the 3 has much better video. So its all about specs that does not have so much to do with IQ.

@arpitkumargahlot 3 жыл бұрын
I think you mean lenses perform the same, which they are meant to. Software performance metric has a lot of other factors besides forming image from a lens. The buffer speed, buffer size and thermal performance has gotten better. More continuous shooting, better C-AF, smoother AF, better transition, better lens firmware, greater likelihood of X-E4 receiving support for future lenses as well as film simulations etc. A camera is much more than IQ. C-AF performance improvements and eye detect is particularly valuable for a lot of people. Think not of the IQ, but the engineering required to put the camera in that ideal state for that split second in which it can achieve that IQ. It is no mean feat(not just for Fuji, for other innovators like Canon and Sony as well).

So Why these models I ask You? I have the XPro1, and the XE1, and I have much enjoyed these models as I like the way it handles and even both are 16pixels, that I am Ok with that as I use it in RAW, and even today even though that they are Old, and I do not need new models that has all the Bells, and Whistles. But I use 3rd party Lenses like my 50 year Manual Focus Nikkors via an adapter, and I love using them in Manual Mode, and Stop Down Metering, It is just like using a film camera. So why would I would pay more on the New Fuji Lenses that I have been blessed in using my Nikkor Lenses. It is the same old photo slogan "KISS" meaning Keep It Simple Stupid" But there are others that have not experience in using Old Film lenses onto a Digital, Need Proof, See the film "The King's Speech" I heard that the Cinematopher said that he was using lenses from the 1930's to the 1940's to get that Photo look, and that is my happy story as I love using old gear technology to Digital Technology, and no it is not worth it in getting up to date digital gear to improve your photography. If my XPro1 or XE1 breaks down, then I will get another XPro1 or another XE1 in which I happy with the results. As that is the way how I shoot...

@@benjhaisch Sorry to come off critical but you do very nice work here. It's just that I am only interested in what you have to say and the music does not add to the experience it detracts from it. When you speak to the camera it is distracting. Better used sparingly for the b-roll. Even if the volume is mixed very low it becomes more of a workout for the listener's brain attempting to process it. I became aware of all this working over 30 years as a sound mixer for live events and broadcast.
