Fujifilm X-Series cameras are far superior to many camera lines. Regardless of the model you choose, you're getting extremely good quality. In this video, I discuss my decision on whether to choose the Fujifilm X-T3 or the older, but very capable Fujifilm X-T1.
Along with the choice of these two cameras, I also take into consideration I already own a Canon EOS RP full frame camera that I won't be getting rid of anytime soon, due to the great price point I picked it up at, and the overall quality of the full frame RP vs the Fuji APS-C sensors.
To be honest, you cannot go wrong with either of these camera purchases, but factors other than tech specs need to be taken into consideration, especially when pairing the camera with another system. But I had to choose only one of these, and send the new X-T3 back during my return window, or sell the used X-T1 on Ebay.
Give the video a view, and let me know your thoughts, and if you plan to purchase, or already own one of these excellent cameras.

XC 16-50mm is an excellent lens. It came on my X-T20 when I bought that camera new. I thought it would be a terrible kit lens but I was amazed. One won't get much bokeh out of it, but that is the only complaint I can make about it. Optics are excellent.

EyE feel the same about the XC 15-45mm Fujinon. Overlooked it as the cheap plastic gimmicky piece it is initially until my ear to the ground picked up signals that it was a sleeper. At the dirt cheap prices for these barely used on EBay, I picked one up to give it a shot. Boy, was EyE pleasantly surprised at the optical quality! What I love about this lens is the diminutive size & weight, not to mention that delicious 15mm wide angle view! Now, despite having other more expensive, much better built Fujinon, this is the one I usually grab for general daytime walkaround street shooting, mounted on my X-E2 or X-T20 )alternating with my 27mm pancake with the aperture ring. As an old school shooter who could care less about video or action photography, these older models are all I want or need (especially so as the Trans2 sensor is my favorite, also in my X-T1 ✅

Thanks for a great and useful video. How refreshing to watch a photographer who doesn’t bang on about the need to get the latest and most expensive equipment. I’ve used Nikon for landscape photography for a few years now but recently purchased a Fujifilm X10 second hand with a view to street photography and gave my Nikon stuff to my son. How happy am I now with the X10…very small by comparison but built like the proverbial brick wall. It does everything I want it to do and does it so well. I’m now in the market to add an X-T1.

At some point I decided chasing the next, best camera was pointless. They're all going to produce nice quality images, now it's a just a matter of how good the photographer is with framing, settings, etc. Cameras are definitely to the point where even the least expensive new cameras are typically of more than enough quality. Thanks mike!

For me the X-T1 is ergonomically the pinnacle of design of the Fuji system. I can see why the later models increased in size to facilitate improved specs, but they have just grown too large. I find IBIS on later models useful for telephoto lenses, which I do not use that often, so is a bit of a waste to me. All the buttons are in the right place apart from the image view and the only other niggle I have is the drive mode is too easy to move accidentally. It is the only camera both film and digital I have ever used and (I have used plenty) that is equally comfortable to use in any configuration from no hand grip, metal hand grip and battery grip. Even with the battery grip attached it still reasonably light and compact. I would be perfectly happy if Fuji had just put the newer AF, sensors and processors in the old body. Even with the old AF and sensor the IQ is still great. Can't go wrong with it really. Love it so much I have just got a second body and battery grip. Much nicer to use than the X-H1 I also have.
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with basically ALL of that Richard, except the need for a thumbgrip - that's something I can't live without! My hands must be bigger than normal or something lol but I find that my thumb 'wanders' around the back of most cameras, unless I have the hotshoe thumbgrip to place my thumb. I've purchased a few just to make sure I have one for every camera! other than that - spot on! Thanks for commenting!

I have both the X-T1 and X-T2 at home, and though I see your point, there was some silly decisions made in the X-T1 design that I'm really glad they fixed in the X-T2. Firstly, if, like me, you like to use the manual dials, they're a bit too skinny and are sometime a bit hard to get a good hold on them when you have your eye up to the EVF. Then, they chose the "film camera" approach with the ISO dial completely locked, and the SS dial that locks up when in Auto. That makes sense for a film camera where you don't change your ISO that much, for a digital one? hmm not sure. It sure did get in my way though. Also, because the SS dial is skinny and not locked, I end up turning is when I'm switching metering mode, that's kinda annoying. In a similar manner, I'm turning the drive mode dial when changing the ISO. Also the tilt screen is nice, but if you do a lot of portrait stuff it isn't very useful They pretty much fixed all of it in the X-T2 and 3 : not the dials are taller, you can chose to have them locked or completely unlocks, the drive mode dial is a bit tighter, the tilt screen now has a 2 axis tilt which is so much nicer for portrait oriented photos. The only "cost" is that the camera is taller by 2 or 3 mm and deeper by about 2, overall, you can really feel the differenc only if you place them side by side. I wouldn't go for the X-T4 as it is considerably bigger than both the X-T2 and 3 thanks to the IBIS and the bigger battery, but the X-T1 had shortcomings, saying that this camera was perfect ergonomically is a bit of a stretch edit : forgot to mention that the plastic pieces on there like the front and back grips, and the ports door on the left don't hold up very well as time goes on. I'm very glad they used a more rugged material on the X-T2 and later models. I had to make extensive repair to my X-T1 as the grips were peeling off and replacement parts are expensive as hell
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 2 жыл бұрын
At first read I thought you were saying the X-T1 was a silly choice by those of us using it lol but I see I misread that! The point of the video was the 1 vs 3, and unfortunately I don't have the funds to purchase and test all four. It's just a 'third' camera for me, so the X-T1 is doing just fine. Again, if I was only using the Fuji line, or using it as my #1 camera, I would have looked at other considerations. I don't think one can go wrong with any of the four choices, but seems like you really like the 2 - I'm sure there are many who feel the same. Maybe one day I'll get my hands on one and can do a comparison. Thanks for your thoughts Matthieu! I

@@matthieuzglurg6015 I did say it was near on perfect for me. Personally I have no trouble with the dials on the X-T1 other than the drive mode as previously mentioned.Each to their own. Yes the X-T2 does seem to be better constructed, thus far though I have had no issues with my X-T1s, though I have seen some really rough looking ones especially with the peeling leatherette. What I would say about the small increase in size of the X-T2/3 is that is for the body only. Add a battery grip and they both become significantly bigger than the X-T1 so equipped. I can see why they did it - 2 extra batteries for the increased video capabilities of the later cameras, but that extra bulk and weight is not something I appreciate, you are then in DSLR territory which somewhat negates one of the main advantages of mirrorless designs.

A major difference between the T1 and T3 is the sensor. On several Fuji sites people argue the T1 sensor provides more film like output. Starting with the T3 Fuji became more aware of the video capabilities of their bodies. If the T1 has the features and output you want then it would be silly to purchase the newer camera for a higher price. The XC lenses have the same glass, I believe, than the XF lenses. The XC lenses are housed in a plastic envelope and thus are lighter. A major benefit for a street shooter. I do like the EVF present on most Fuji bodies. I like to frame my images using the EVF. I’m not a fan of using the LCD. Personal preference. I’m surprised you are using Fuji gear. I thought you were a GR guy. I understand you went from the iii to the II because you didn’t like the figity wheel that sometimes doesn’t work. I was further surprised to see you are using the OG GR. I understand that just because there is a new iteration of a camera you don’t need to spend the additional money to purchase it. I’m retired now so I’m not purchasing the latest and greatest. I’m at the point where good enough is good enough. Sorry manufactures. Your gear was made to last. I will take advantage of that engineering. We have to use the right tool for the right job. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic Жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin - I like to try lot of different manufacturers. The GR is great for street, and I'm probably in a small minority that thinks the original 2016 APS-C GR is more than good enough quality-wise and see no reason to spend the extra hundreds on a GRIII. If it was the only camera I was using, the III might be best, but as you pointed out, I like to use a variety of cameras, so doesn't make sense to spend so much on the latest/greatest piece of gear. I find the X-T1 to be a great all-around camera, right behind the Pentax K-70. The X-T1 is lighter and easier to handle for a long day, but the K-70 seems to output better quality images. Either way, I love using a variety, and the LEAST used camera in my arsenal is the most expensive one I own - the Canon EOS RP. Price doesn't always guarantee it's the best!

as a little side note : those Fujis are kinda well sealed. They improved the weather sealing with each generation, so obviously the X-T1 is sealed, but that's the weakest seal of all, especially with that bulging ports door on the left. I have an X-T2, and as far as Im' concerned, with a weather sealed lens, you're pretty much set. The X-T3 is a small improvement, and the X-T4 a small improvement over that as well, and you could take the X-T4 in rain strom without any issues
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the input Matthieu. I've seen a few videos where the owner had to have his X-T4 repaired dueo to rain, so even though they are very good, they don't compare to the basic pentax k-70, which can be completely submerged in water and still fire right up. But again, no question the X-T4 is quality, and let's face, how many of use are using this kind of camera in severe elements? I'm more concerned about subjecting myself to the elements than I am my camera LOL!

One downside to not having in body stabilization in these Fuji cameras is almost no Fuji prime lenses have image stabilization. With the exception of one or two long focal length primes, only the Fuji zoom lenses have image stabilization. That limits the effectiveness of these Fuji cameras when shooting with primes in certain low light situations. XT4 gets around this problem because it has IBIS.
