I just discovered the best time to watch these little gems is later in the evening, in a room with low light, on a device with a larger (than smaller) screen. It's like Hugh is right here, with me, telling me his story, and showing me his B&W photos. Then, I just discovered the VERY best way to watch these little gems, is to take time for a second viewing in the same session as the first viewing. This allows for an even better absorption of his message and an even deeper appreciation of how the Medium is part of THIS message. Wow. And thanks

Ticks the boxes I want - Photography first, IBIS, smaller/lighter and with more then enough tech tools, though I'm sure I will lock into only about 30% of them in normal days to day use. Wholeheartedly agree. I feel the X-T5 is a great step in the right direction for photography, but the bold step for Xpro 4 to be photography only like you mentioned, then indeed it would be a game changer to show the commitment to photographers. No HDMI, no microphone inputs, no video options, similar to what we see in the digital Leicas and in the latest Hasselblad. If that is ever made, then that would be the only reason for me to trade in my ever dear X100V. Fantastic video and insights as always!

XT5 is a compelling package albeit rather expensive here in Australia (more or less same price at launch as Nikon Z6ii) - it’s a shame we’ve lost the hump from the XT1/2/3 and metering dial, I would have thought a photography centric camera wouldn’t need the still/movie dial. I guess we’ll have to wait for the XPro4 for those of us who do not care for video.

An X-Pro4 with the 40MP sensor, new processor, 5.76M dot EVF (coupled to a slightly higher eye-point optical viewfinder) and IBIS would be a very compelling package, IMO. As to the Japanese manufacturers upgrading the user interface with something more akin to the Hasselblad X2D 100c ... I wouldn't hold my breath in hopes of seeing that anytime soon.

One thing I like about the X-T4 screen is the ability to flip it right down and turn the screen in to face the camera. Cheap X-Pro hack. This is how mine spends most of its time. If I really need to chimp I can use the playback in the EVF without taking my eye away, and be back to image making in seconds. This method is particularly advantageous working in theatre where chimping with the screen lets out a lot of light. Chimping in the EVF is imperceptible. Good news about this release for me is a second X-T4 (either used or new) might come my way cheaper.

Always love your take on Fuji’s cameras Hugh. Used to have a Fuji XT3 before the pandemic(regrettably sold it when it kicked off as I used it mainly for travel). The thing was a dream for photos and I never used the thing much for video, I’m just a stills kind of guy. And I must admit, hearing its smaller, improves the grip and gets great IBIS might just draw this guy back into the Fuji zen garden.

Ordered a x-t5 earlier today. As a street photographer, I’m extremely excited to get my hands on it. Coming from the xpro2, the improved auto focus is welcomed as well as the speed. Also, as a hybrid shooter, the video specs are exactly what I need. And the Xt3 like screen is perfect. This is my 5th Fuji camera and I never had a problem with the menu system. It well organized, I suppose. But more so, my goal is to set up the camera so my dive into the menu almost doesn’t happen.

Another refreshing take, thanks Hugh. Especially the part about how Apple keeps resetting UI/UX expectations. Although I suspect that while a hypothetical full-frame camera from Cupertino would certainly wreak havoc on the prosumer photography sector, if something is going to survive, my money would be on the retro dial / rangefinder style segment over the PASM, since users of the former rely less on software interfaces than the latter. As long as Fuji keeps putting the dials in, I’ll always have one of them in my bag. Fingers crossed that IBIS makes it into the upcoming rangefinder style units on X-Trans 5. I enjoyed leaving my Canon R5C behind for just my X-Pro 3 + 35 F2 on a recent trip, but I didn’t enjoy having to settle for shaky video footage at the times when my tripod was out of reach. Yes, it’s not a video camera, or I could have taken a stabilized lens…but any kind of IS, sensor or digital, I feel like is now indispensable. And it’s in those moments when my tripod is out of reach and yet I must capture the moment before me that I reach for my iPhone.

I wish that all camera makers would allow the option to turn off video altogether for menus, etc. Get rid of all the video related tabs, give the ability to remap the dedicated record button, and maybe, who knows, it could turn off system-wide functions that are on chewing up battery life (I'm looking at you "pre-imaging" functions)...obviously you would have one menu item to turn it back on, but just the reduction in menus and remapping of the record button would put a smile on us stills only photogs. I basically do this with my Leica M240 by choosing "Classic Metering with no Live View", but there is no customizing of the record button, and the menus are still there...

Again, a great analysis Hugh. The T5 promises to be a great camera at a great price (in the US, in Europe it’s quite a bit more expensive). You’re absolutely right about Fuji’s menus. I’ve been a long time user since the X100 and X-Pro1, and used many of their cameras up until the T3. The only menu overtake was when moving from 16MP models to 24MP in 2016. The current menus are cluttered and esp. the newer functions are not always logically grouped. Next to that, functions in one menu tree are often impacted (without warning) by functions somewhere else which probably caused your AF-issue 😉. When I recently picked up the H2 for a test shoot, it struck me how much overdue this menu restructure is. One other point struck me as well. While it has excellent DR at base-ISO, the high-ISO performance was quite mediocre. A consequence of many pixels and limited real estate. Some physics are undeniable…

Compare to the the xt3 the xt5 is dubble the price
@jacobh5817
@jacobh5817 Жыл бұрын
@@Ddaszidan I’m not really shure what the basis of that reasoning is. Actually in their launch keynote Fuji pride themselves on the fact that in the US the X-T5 is the exact same price as the X-T3 was when it was launched: $1699
@Ddaszidan

@jacobh5817
@jacobh5817 Жыл бұрын
@@Ddaszidan That may very well be true, but the €1099 for an X-T3 is a heavily discounted price due to the nearing end-of-production for that camera, whereas the €1999 for an X-T5 is the MSRP. In the US the original price for an X-T3 in 2018 was the same as now the X-T5 ($1699) which is quite an achievement from Fuji. In Europe prices are now quite different due to inflation and exchange rates. Either way, my plea was that although the X-T5 in almost every aspect is a much better camera than its predecessors, there are two caveats to consider: 1) due to added features, menus are now more cluttered than e.g. the X-T2 or X-T3. That calls for an overhaul of the menu structure. 2) with the increase in megapixels, the high-ISO performance of the X-T3 is actually better than that of the X-T5. Good to know when you’re an available light photographer. So, one might argue that the X-T3 is actually a great deal when you don’t need 40MP, IBIS and better AF.

One of your last points on a higher end small photocentric body with simpler menu system and removal of unwanted/uneeded video features is exactly what I've been thinking I'd love to see. Irrespective of cost, the FF lenses are generally just too big. I'm a dedicated G9 MFT user and love it. The body is not small but the lenses make up for it. I would like to add a FF sensor camera but don't need such video complexity in the body that I'll never use, even though it's probably included since it's already paid for R&D. Wouldn't a small Fuji body, built like a G9 with all the photography goodies, minimal video capabilities and as you mentioned some redesign small primes be a wonderful Street tool? I'm waiting too. Do you know something we don't?

Good first review. I found it most interesting about your XF56mm II performance experience. I recently upgraded to the 56mm II and have been using it on my XT4. Personally, I have found that the 56mm II AF has been quite disappointing. It hunts and I think it's slow to lock focus. I expected it to be snappy but not so. I recently had a low light indoor jazz shoot and started with the 56mm II but ended up switching to the 90mm f/2 which I found to quickly lock focus with no hunting. The 56mm II is sharp once focus is locked but getting there was painful...especially during an assignment. Yikes!

Well said Hugh, and I can certainly appreciate the sometimes being in too much of a hurry / camera settings. (I blame it on the times we live in!) I am happy to see camera companies continue to push forward and do with they would spend as much time on user interface as they do on overloading cameras with too many feature sets (the old "I see you have a Schwartz too!" mentality) for the intended audience. We use the GH5/GH6 for most video applications and the EM-1X / OM-1 for stills, and I like having dedicated tools for the job at hand. Even though I am primarily a M43rd shooter for most of my commercial work, I have been eye balling (and borrowing) the GFX 100s, more-so for the 16 bit color and highlight to shadow transitions, and would love to see an X-Pro 4 come out to replace my Pen-F for street work. As much as an M11 would be something to strive for, with my aging eyes, I appreciate having the option of autofocus! Wishing you and Claudia all the best! (and thanks for letting me babble on!)

Unfortunately, I don’t think your mishap with the auto focus is all your fault! I just saw a video of the XH2 and the guy was complaining about missed images time and again. It makes me wonder if they’ve really solved the problem with auto focus? I’m going to be really cautious since I thought they would’ve fixed it in the XT4, but I was wrong. The best thing I’ve learned is just to use the basic setting of number one and to use the limiter focus on certain lenses, thereby decreasing the hunting that goes on. Time will tell, let’s hope Fuji can figure it out before they lose followers! Or perhaps they should just license Sony’s tech to use in their own cameras autofocus!

Any chance you can see how the rear screen is sized vs. previous X-T models so I can see if I can buy an early screen protector for my X-T5 preorder? For example will the X-T4 screen protectors fit etc.? Thanks!

I have a XT3 I want to upgrade.. and now I am divided. Do I get a XT5 for keeping the same experience (yes, clickable dials!!)? Or do I go for a H2H for improving my photography? (I couldn't care less for video, apologies). Decisions, decisions...

Maybe if Fuji gets rid of the dumb looking angle on the dial deck they can find some additional room on its innards for other stuff. I would love to get an X-Pro that looks as beautiful as my X100V and that’s is impossible as long as Fuji stubbornly sticks with the XPro series, “wedge look.” What’s up with that, Fuji. Does someone over in Tokyo think that’s a fashion statement? If it was functional I’d get used to it, but it ain’t. Just dumb looking for dumb looking’s sake.

I have had many problems with AF with both the x-s10 and x-t4 when it came to moving subjects. The x-t5 may be an improvement BUT fuji focus system is still not as good as sony. I loved fuji but kept having missed focus with moving subjects. I have been shooting for over 20 years and never had the same issues with nikon or canon. I switched to sony and own the a7iii and a7iv. The focus system on sony has no issues keeping up with even moving subjects and the a7iv real time focus tracking was a game changer for me. I know the x-h2s reviews also showed that sony beats it. I hope one day fuji can figure it out.

Let’s face reality here: Fujifilm is never going to beat Sony or equal Sony in AF, it’s just not their focus. Usable and adequate is their game. And to be honest, I’m an “old fashioned” photographer (though i’m only 40), but I was brought up with the notion that photography is 50% machine and 50% human factor. I’ve tried Sony, Canon and Fujifilm systems and in the end settled with Fujifilm because they gave me what I was looking for in photography: colour science, skin tones, fantastic optics and shooting experience. Yes Sony’s AF is mind-blowing, but, nothing else inspired me when holding a Sony camera, the ergonomics are poor, button placements make no sense, balance in hand is all wrong and bad colours. I do pro-portrait and theatre events photography and Fujifilm has been good enough for my paid work in terms of AF. Would I like the tracking to be more reliable and more intelligent (on the XT4)? Yes of course, and i got the answer in the new XH2! AF-C finally works although you do need to set it up correctly

@@ryanhoviolin good points. I am a little older than you and started out shooting on film cameras in the late 90's and my last film camera was a nikon F100 lol. I totally get what you are saying. The one thing I also really liked about fuji was the film simulations but I found I can apply fuji film simulations to sony raw files in DXO photolab 6 so that need is now fulfilled as well. I tend to shoot at theme parks and do some street photography where the subjects are usually walking or moving at a fast pace so a reliable AF is a must for me. I am not a hardcore sony fanboy and I agree the right tool for the right job. I shoot with the a7iv and honestly the grip is great, the dials are similar to fuji in that they are customizable enough for my needs and even some lenses have the aperture on the lens (not that I use it that way).

Are you in the US? You said $1700. Is that USD? I am in Australia. Body only is $3000 here. The XT 4 is $2400 AUD. I think Fujifilm has priced themselves out of the market. the XT 5 is a $2000 AUD camera, not a $3000 AUD camera.

The shots you picked up, were they off Omar? a few others scream about the autofocus and its capabilities, so was something wrong with your lens as it was the same lens used on another XT5 test in Japan. Anyway I hope you get one back for a longer test. What!!!! Fuji XT5 no CFexpress. What rubbish is this? If XH2 can include CF express, why not XT5? I was hoping for XT5 to improve the buffer by 200% - 300% compared to XT3. I shoot sports & animals mainly, so disappointed with this announcement. After all these years of using Fuji APSC gear. Finally, it's time to move back to full frame. After all these years, the Fuji APXC camera is a good camera in terms of image output but not as good as full frame technology to date. So disappointed after all these years of waiting for the Fuji XT5 😪

Can one fantasize about the day when camera companies either open source the upper layers of the software system or provide APIs to camera functions so that users can write their own UIs (user interfaces)? That’s how computer geeks deal with foolish designs sent out by the device makers.
