Safety and LB. Schooler had his limitations and Foster pretty much checked out mid year. At LB...DMO finally has a full offseason to work at the position and get stronger, Ford came into his own late, Gbenda provides depth, and DTD adds experience and is hungry to get into the NFL.

I think adding Gary Patterson to the staff was genius. Defense should be much better due to his knowledge of match ups and packages.

@@drew9221 I will have to agree with you, I mean who is this guy. Sark didn't have any options out there so he poached the guy from where again? Washington? What have they done lately, look at the teams they play. You expect him to be successful in the SEC. The move to the SEC will be UT's suicide.

D needs to get better for sure....but remember that in pretty much every loss last season, it seemed like the offense had several 3-and-outs in a row in second halves. As a result, the D would simply get gassed and looked worse than they actually were late in games. A better offense alone would improve our D. Continuity, transfers, GP, and depth will certainly help too. Cant wait for week one. 🤘
@Bones12x2
@Bones12x2 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, the defense would have been statistically far better last year if the offense had played complimentary. Even the scores from the offense were often super fast... So it would be a three and out followed by a huge play then another thrrr and out. So even the toucbdown hurt the defense because the offense couldn't control clock and field position.
@georgedakil3506

I am really hoping Alfred Collins steps up and becomes the rush end that Omenihu or Ossai was. This is the missing link. Finkley, Sorrell and Bedsoe need to be on an Express training to be more than just serviceable at the position.
@Bones12x2
@Bones12x2 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgedakil3506 absolutely, Collins may single handidly determine the siccess of the entire team. If he becomes the player everyone has expected him to be, then it completely transforms the defense and with all their weapons on offense they will be capable of winning nearly every game. If Collins doesnt flash... They are gonna be in shootouts a lot more often.

@@Bones12x2 Coburn, Ojomo, Overshown, and Jamison will be playing for their NFL lives trying to put good tape out there, which bodes well for us as fans. Collins may be doing the same, I think he will declare early if he projects as a mid round pick or better. He has ridiculous measurables which the pros must be salivating over. I don't think we will have any guys give us 8-10+ sacks this season. But, I think we will have a committee of guys that will have 3-6. The coaches are now more familiar with the players they have, GP is here to help, and more familiarity with the system overall in year two will help too. I keep wondering if Overshown should be used as a chess piece, kind of how Isaiah Simmons was used at Clemson a few years back. He is better in coverage and as a blitzer than he is getting off blocks as a true LB.

@@marcg7329 agreed. I just hope the scheme is mote aggresive this year. Watts will help a ton. I never want to see guys 8 yards off the WR on third and 5 again.

Homer…not sure how you always put together top notch videos and ask great questions to the fan base. This, IMO, is a very tough question to answer because each group’s success is reliant upon the other, however, it always starts with the line. If the line slightly steps it up, the LBs and secondary will be better. My hope is the line is most improved, my thought is that the secondary is most noticeable. Thank you so much for the awesome content brother!

The most frustrating thing to watch last year was the defense would play so well the first 30 minutes, then fall apart the last 30 minutes. The OU, OKST, and Baylor games come to mind.

@@jimmys7985 to be fair tho, we lost a LOT when jj, jwhitt and okafor went down. Okafor was a turnstyle for years, but after the arky game, he actually turned a corner and did pretty well. And jj was like our ONLY legit rusher.

The D gets way too much blame. Yes, they weren't great and they weren't to begin the season. Hell, we had a WR starting at S, lol. Who hadn't played the position since his Fr season. Yet when the O started to sh*t the bed in the 2nd half of the season, you saw the D get put out in games more and more. You can't expect your D to win you games when they aren't very good and are getting gassed because you can't move the ball on O. If PK's history shows us anything, his 1st to 2nd years at Washington were vastly improved. 1st year not that great, 2nd year was a lot better. I don't see how that doesn't happen here. Especially if the O is true to form with all the weapons it has now. Last year it was Bijan, Worthy and Whittington. When Whitt went down and Casey's thumb was causing his issues, pretty put a nail in the season. This year you've got a stack of weapons across the board. No excuse to not have a winning season this year and succeed.

It sounds a bit hyperbolic but I genuinely think Collins will single handidly make or break the defense. If he can consistently disrupt passing plays and maintain the edge on defense while randomly making those flash highlight plays that first round prospects should make.... The defense can be pretty solid.... If Collins under performs then either, someone else will need to have a break out year or they will struggle.

Rushing the passer and creating sacks is fun and exciting. Some of these Big XII QBs will get the ball out of their hands so fast that maybe pass rushing shouldn't be the focus area. The 200 yards rushing against us that was a massive problem. Can our outside LBs play the run well enough to handle a 3-3-5? (I'm not saying rushing the passer isn't important... Just that run defense is more important)

Your defensive scheme means nothing if you can’t tackle. Stop diving. Keep your center of gravity. Wrap up and drive your feet. You’ll have 10 other player coming to help you take down 1 ball carrier.

I think that if we want to be better against the run, we need to have two of Coburn, Sweat, and Murphy on the line together. If Collins or Broughton have gotten stronger against the run, one of them could back up Murphy. A down three of Collins -- Coburn -- Murphy could stop the run while still getting pass rush. This would be similar to the Patriots 3-3-5 defense with Anderson (300lbs), Godchaux (310lbs), and Guy (315lbs), only Collins is more athletic than Anderson.
