Concrete is better. It is what's used in building American freeways. It has to be a certain minimum thickness with proper reinforcements, though.

If a country don't have maintenance culture don't embrace concrete road , If the road are abandoned like previous road when those concrete rod get rusted, vehicle can't ply those road.

I really agree and support you engr.Dave umahi,may your tenure be long with blessings and greater success.Ministry of works should be showing us the progress of all this ongoing works the minister is talking about,otherwise Nigerians will think its just talk and promises as always..l strongly think the coastal roads should go through ondo south (araromi ekitipupa area) from lekki to warri...That would literally mean lagos sagamu highway for those going to benin,Asaba,onitsha,awka,enugu while the coastal highway for those traveling to delta,bayelsa,portharcout,Aba,uyo and calabar....And l think it would be cheaper and quicker too going through lekki, ondo south to warri..Thank you.

@@dubemellit2932 Yes,but the lagos sagamu highway for those going to benin,Asaba,onitsha,awka,enugu,while this coastal highway should go through araromi in ondo state,for those going to warri by the refinery, bayelsa,portharcout,uyo and calabar...lnstead of taking this coastal highway through an already existing sagamu ore benin highway,which is what l think they are doing...lf you understand what l mean?

Its a shame a country with abundant crude oil dosent have asphelt a bye product from petroleum Refineries to make roads. These are the harms of importing petro because you will also import Asphelt at a very high coast in view of its weight.

With due apology to the Minister, though an Engineer, he is saying rubbish regarding the design of highways pavement whether flexible (asphalt) or rigid pavement (concrete). There are lot of factors that determines what pavement should be used. In addition, it is not strictly true that the design life of a rigid pavement is 40 years. The problem , we have is that the highways in Nigeria are not adequately planned,designed and constructed.

As an civil and Building engineer i would say that concrete pavement and road will last at least 40 years if build to the required standard and used as they were intended to. Of course if you design a concrete pavement or road for a certain tonnage and you constantly exceed it then it will not last as long.
