but, even the reaction of ethane with chlorine can give dichloroethane. in fact, there can be 4 different products in the substitution reaction of methane ; chloromethane, dichloromethane, trichloromethane and tetrachloromethane. I think for ethane there might be 6... but I'm not sure about Ethane

The reason why 3 is correct is because it didn't specify that the reaction has to be between ethane and chlorine, further substitution can still occur. As for why H-H is not considered a product it is because H-H reacts with the chlorine to become H-Cl.

they didnt specify the time and amount of each reactant so the reaction will continue even to form other products like Tetrachloroethane hope that helps
